So, I'm looking to get involved with role playing games, obviously. I'm curious what /tg/ suggests is the better game to start with, either Pathfinder or D&D 5E?
5e. pathfinder is dense as all get out.
>>48921056
Ryuutama.
>>48921118
Is it dense enough to be unplayable for a beginner? The starter box set has decent enough reviews and is ridiculously cheap, so it seems low commitment if it doesn't turn out to be my thing.
What are some good minion types for various wizards and.or assorted magic users? In particular I'm thinking about these:
>Necromancer (undead minions beyond skeletons/zombies)
>Mentalist (mind controlled minions, but which type is best?)
>Summoner (beyond angels and demons)
>Shifter (which animals and monsters are good?)
>Artificer (I'm thinking golems and something else)
>Elementalist (elementals, obviously)
>Alchemist (homunculi and slimes?)
>Spellblade (animated weapons and armor, I think)
What's are some good minions for these guys in your opinions? I'm also open to additional wizard types and their minions, too.
>>48920793
I like using formians for summoner minions. They make good, obedient workers who are intelligent enough to follow orders but don't run much of risk of them backstabbing you at a later date.
>>48920793
Necromancers
>Zombies
>Skeletons
>Intern Med-Students.
>Ghosts
>Religious Acolytes.
Mentalists
>Inconspicious pet animals; crazy cat lady mode.
>Well paid employees.
>Apprentices that think they're learning from another type of mage.
>Debtors who's accounts were purchased.
Summoner
>Machines from the Clockwork Nirvana.
>Elementals
>Local small gods, Shinto varieties.
>Ethereal Merchants; your tower is also a Bazaar in return for their guardianship.
Shifter
>Pack animals with highly social habits. Wolves, Apes, Ravens.
Artificer
>Clockwork Automatons.
>Perfectly crafted Stepford Wives
>Half-golems of people who've lost limbs/bits.
>Sanctum-wide bodied AI.
Elementalist
Try for a bit more flavor if you can. Planetouched community formed up around a link to their elemental plane from the prime material that your wizard set themselves up near to expand their knowledge. Locals support their community and the wizard is a part of it.
Alchemist.
>Drug Addicts.
>Alchemical zombies.
>Sentient plants
Spellblade
>YOU ARE A WARRIOR. GET AN ARMY DAMNIT.
>Spirits of defeated foes.
>Apprentices/Students.
>Bandits turned security squad at swordpoint.
>>48922057
*whose accounts were purchased.
Sorry.
>Friends have never played D&D before, ask me to DM
>Help them roll characters, try running them through a few modules
>They enjoy it, but I get bored and eventually stop because they always want to play Chaotic Stupid
>Run a few games of Paranoia, which they don't like because "the stakes aren't as high"
>About a year later, they ask me to write a campaign for them, tell them I will as long as they tone down the PvP and burning down every village they find
>20 hours of writing
>Another 10 of map making and other misc. shit
>Start campaign last night, we play 6 hours and they make it through 2 rooms of a 35 room dungeon because they are going full Chaotic Stupid again
>Any attempts to put them back on the rails instantly failed
>MFW
Just...god damn it. I'm about to have a conversation with the primary cause of the Chaotic Stupid. I'm going to give them one more session and then I'm fucking done.
Wasted a fucking day of my life creating a setting they don't give a shit about and then have to baby sit them because they want to PvP, but get mad if their special snowflake gets killed or they have to wait for someone to roll a new character.
Your player's behavior probably stems from a lack of fun in other aspects of your game.
>>48920434
Just stop playing nigga, like, close your books.
>>48920573
>GM must do whatever the players want and suck their dick under the table during the smoke breaks like a good bitch.
>>48920434
>20 hours of writing
First mistake.
>Another 10 of map making and other misc. shit
Second mistake.
No plan survives contact with the enemy. And everyone at the table, save for yourself, is an enemy to your plan.
Never write campaigns.
Never write adventures.
Improvise.Or play Tenra Bansho Zero.
So, I'm going to run a GURPS campaign that's kind of like Scooby Doo mixed with Welcome to Night Vale, but creepier. Just trippy as hell and sometimes funny. I'd like to know any suggestions you have for where to find inspiration.
>Scooby-Doo
>Night Vale
You just named two.
Follow the mechanics of a Scooby episode (Rumours, Interview, Clues, Scary Moment, Hijinks, Dumb Luck, Showdown, Unmasking) and mix in your favorite flavors from NV.
If only there was some kind of incredibly popular piece of media in which an outside agent has to investigate a small town filled with quirky characters hiding an unnerving mystery.
>>48919339
Thanks.
>>48919420
Okay, you got me there.
I hate monks.
Now, don't get me wrong: there are ways where "hitting shit with your fists" works. Exalted has the whole Greek Myth-meets-anime thing going on, and the martial arts make sense because they bend reality to make it work as well as swords and crossbows and shit. And since the setting is so Asian, and the only important martial artists story-wise are Immaculates and Sidereals, it ends up more-or-less working.
But games like D&D? Absolutely not. Putting aside that they clash thematically with the obvious Tolkien/Western-inspired design of every class (before you say "psionics," know that I think they clash as well, though for being too sci-fi rather than too Asian), there's the fact that there's a reason why pre-gunpowder armies used spears and swords and shit and NOT fists: they have inferior range, they have no leverage to increase power, and they aren't sharp. This applies to far more than D&D, by the way.
Monks shouldn't be a viable class to anything that makes even the pretense of realism. "Oh, anon, but it's fantasy! Dragons and shit!" No. Willing suspension of disbelief allows you to stretch what's allowed by reality, but not throw the rules of reality out the window. It doesn't give you a free pass. There's a distinction between "vampires" and "sentient colors that sail between dimensions singing to the fabric of the ether in order to keep it vibrating at the right frequency and prevent the metaphysical anthropomorphic manifestation of Pop-Tarts from stealing Nikola Tesla from his crib while still an infant."
That is what I consider monks to be in any setting with even a pretense of realism.
> Haha, I've said "Muh fantasy, muh dragon and shit", and it instantly makes this argument invalid, I'm so smart.
No, suck my enlighened dick. In a game where you can study so hard, you can throw fireballs with your mind (psions), become so strong, you can jump to heavens or so slick, you can slip into a keyhole, punching shit is what breaks your suspension of disbelief?
>>48918696
Seconded.
>Use supernatural abilities to throw a summon an elemental embodiment of fire
>Use supernatural abilities to punch harder than a guy normally could
If your suspension of disbelief permits the former but not the latter, your priorities are skewed.
And besides, what modern fantasy setting doesn't have a not-Japan part of the world these days?

Cloak-shape for X-wing when?
>>48913005
I would like to see the TarTarSauce-Class Patrol Cruiser in either game.
Something about Imperial ships that don't follow the traditional Imperial designs just do things for me that I don't understand.
Memes aside, aren't crossbows a tiny bit underpowered in D&D? I mean, for being considered such fearsome weapons during the Middle Ages, mechanically speaking they suck pretty bad. Unless you're a wizard who can't be proficient with bows and can't afford to spend a feat on it, they're pretty much invariably inferior.
>>48917889
Ranged weapons have always been underpowered (to some extent) in D&D, because the system's main Ranged weapons have always been magic.
Take the Firebolt can trip vs an arrow:
>firebolt - 1d10, avg 5 dmg
>arrow - 1d6+mod, the best result you're going to get is 11dmg, avg 8dmg
There is almost no point to a magic user having a bow.

>be me

>they give me a quest to DM

I think I am going to fuck up. I am well versed in tabletop games and rules as a player but now it is my time to be a DM. I've read the DM's guide but what I am worried about is that they will lose interest.
If any of you DM's out there can give some of their own personal advice to make a game interesting and enjoyable please post ITT.
I find adding elf girls and fetish material at infrequent but still present intervals keeps people paying attention.
>worried about preparing a pre-written quest in a fortnight
Is this another variation of the "tfw 10 word essay due in 5 years" meme?
>>48917470
>fortnight
Who the fuck uses that word?
I recently got into D&D and tabletop games in general. I'm a part of 3 different campaigns right now, and I wanted to get a crack at DMing. I have had a fantasy world going on for a good while outside of any D&D-like aspirations, and I figure I can just adopt that over, pic related. We generally play pretty loose since we are a group of pretty good friends, and things generally get pretty funny, even on the more serious campaigns.
Basically, I'm asking for help, tips, and tricks from people on my first go at DMing. Its pretty likely I might share the DMing role with someone with more experience than me too, on a sort of alternation based system, but I want to focus moreso on making sure the times where I DM aren't boring or too easy/hard.
The main "gimmick" of the campaign is a system whereby magic is stronger/weaker/unusable in different areas, due to all magic in this world being fueled by two sets of leylines, and that near areas of intense leyline activities you start getting fantastical warpings of reality, with magical beasts and spontaneous magical effects and the like.
Any help is appreciated!

I'm looking to play mtg with a friend tomorrow we played awhile ago but were not sure what to buy anymore. Have about 100 dollars.
Don't buy anything. Stop playing Magic. It is a cancerous game, it is literally pay to win and the entry cost is 1000 dollars just so you can have some fat-ass judge declare you are cheating because you forgot one of the game's 5000 rules.
Save some money and play hearthstone instead.
>>48916344
>play hearthstone instead
thought you where going somewhere with this point until you bring up that shit, hahaha get real anon
So you don't already have 2 decks to play with but you want to play with your friend is sugest going to your lgs and picking up duel decks they are pretty balanced with each other but if you try to use it in a game other than that deck it will do pretty bad but if you want to play your friend that's what I'd recommend.

/swg/, help me out before I do something stupid.
I started playing X-Wing back in January, and the T-65 was the first expansion I bought (I wanted to have Wedge in my collection and didn't know it wasn't that good of a ship anymore). I've thought about selling the expansion more than once, but would that be a good idea given the rumors of an upcoming fix for it?
>>48916418
Don't sell. The ship is perfectly good now with an ace pilot.
>>48916418
I'd hold onto it for now. Do you really need the couple of bucks you'd get that much?
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/polyherodice/polyhero-dice-wizard-set
Really looking forward to these dice.
Thoughts?
Any other irregular dice?
I got their previous set and really like them. They are utterly unnecessary, pointless gimmick dice, but they actually roll well and I really like the designs.
I'd love to see them do more, or other companies try it out. I'd love to see a broader variety of themes, too. Other settings like sci-fi, or dice sets based on things other than classes. A loot set of relics and treasures or a monster set of fangs, teeth and claws could be very cool.
>>48915458
I just cant see these not rolling like shit.
Don't get me wrong, they do look sweet, but there is no way in hell those are balanced.
>>48915494
Their previous set was sort of unbalanced, but they say that this set is fine. Everything is balanced along their central axes. All of them, save the D20, are pretty much cylinders and "tear-drops", so all that matters is keeping each face the same.
Say you are polite (yet Evil by DMG) Necromancer, traveling the world with your flock of zombie servants. How should you mark them in order to make obvious to other adventurers, these are not common zombies and should not be attacked on sight?
I guess there is no point when it comes to LG/NG characters, but hey ...
>>48915211
Give them a uniform, and include something that conceals the face. A bunch of masked quiet guys might be creepy, but less kill-on-sight than your regular undead.
>>48915236
You should also probably get something to work on the smell.
>>48915211
Use the meat pupet (mass) spell, it gives the zombies the illusion of life, the ability to do simple tasks they could in life, and you can talk through them to keep the illusion of life up.
With that you can just pretend to be a travilung band of merchants/travelers, which makes it easy to sell off your loot you've stolen from the people you've killed.
