Something I want to talk about that I have been thinking a lot about lately is this:
>For a complex dedicated system you need to provide something unique, and experience not catered to by other systems

For this I examined my homebrews and came to a conclusion. The most unique experience I ever game as a homebrewer was one of my first, years ago. It was founded on the concept of a hybrid wargame and ttrpg that would transition from the control of individual characters to units in large scale combat.

The original hack used Warhammer Fantasy as a base.

Essentially every Player would have a unit that they themselves own. This unit would generally be from 5-10 pieces. This unit would be defined by a "Standard Job" which every member of the unit has as a base for their stats, and "Promotions". Promotions came in a variety of flavors, including making someone a bannerman, musician, or leader of the unit. However it also gave specializations like physician, scout, woodsman, accountant, and more. Each individual piece contributed towards a unit's stats. A big part of the game was making sure your army was supplied, they had work, your pieces were outfitted, morale was high, etc.

These indivudal pieces each could be controlled and their specalizations made use of out of combat. Therefore you essentially have several characters each with their own thing.

Now the players together came to form an Army. An Army has both the units of the player's, but also Army Resources. These were often in the form of siege engines, monstrous creatures, and other strange units.

When participating in engagements both the Army and the Units earn XP. These are used to purchase those jobs I talked about earlier. For armies it is used to purchase tactics and clout. The army sheet has such things on it like Army Relations with various factions, your current contract holder, army resources (like the siege engines), etc.
>>
>>50286873

Now I have gotten off track and rambled. What I wanted to talk about is that I do not know of game that tried to do this blend of having units, engaging in combat, and transitioning to controlling only a few pieces. What I want to ask /gdg/ is this idea something worth moving forward with?

As well I have had more ideas on "Unique Experiences" and the sort of niches one can try and fill. I have ended up throwing out a lot of old stuff in favor of this new design concept. The idea of if one wants to make a rules heavy system the rules must be used to anchor oneself firmly to a niche of a unique experience.
>>
This isn't my first time making a system but it's my first serious attempt rather than theory-crafting and shit. I'm pretty sure it's bad but I was hoping you guys could give me some feedback and maybe push me down the right path.

It's a mesh of three systems. nWoD, Legend of the Five Rings Third Edition, and Risus. At it's core I'm trying to make a system that I can abuse a bit, know everything about, and make abilities and spells on the fly for my players (which I'm pretty alright at when it comes to the few systems I have mastery over).

So far it's Legend of the Five Rings Stats and rolling with nWoD for a point spending system for magic and abilities. I would just use Legend of the Five Rings but it kinda breaks once you take it out of it's setting and I think it's a tinge too complicated for my players at the moment (granted I may have made a system thats too complicated). I'm terrible at writing shit up in a way that's useful for anyone besides me so I already know that's something I need to work on, feel free to scream loser at me tho I probably deserve it.

I was also wondering if you could help me model the probabilities? I heard you guys do that and I think that's swell.

Nearly a year ago I started writing a hack of Dogs in the Vineyard for, of all fucking things, Dragonball (mainly Z, but it could potentially be used for games in the style of any part of the franchise, though I haven't incorporated any ideas from Super yet), and shared it with /tg/.

Then a couple weeks ago I got inspired to start working on it again, and I did a little revising and I'm still poking at it.
Another anon suggested I start some kind of dev blog for keeping track of my progress and for a place for people to leave feedback and suggestions. I started one on tumblr but quickly realized how absolutely fucking retarded tumblr is and got sick of seeing sparklefairy speshul snoflake bullshit shoved in my face every time I logged in, so I moved to wordpress.

You can find the game and updates here (shameless shilling):
https://tiersanongames.wordpress.com/downloads/

It's not "done" yet, I've still got a few things that need work. But it's playable. Mainly it needs some special rules for villains (like minions, and sorcerers in Dogs), and a modification of the Demonic Influence rules.

If anyone has given it a try, let me know how it worked out. Feedback and suggestions are fine, too.

Either way just thought I'd share. Enjoy.

If you don't follow anyone the dash will show you random blogs, all of which were stereotypical tumblr shit, so I thought maybe it'd go away if I followed some random RPG art blogs. And it did, except all those "RPG art" blogs just posted American political shit. So I just moved to something that gave me some better tools to work with anyway.

I've got them connected so the stuff I had on tumblr just transferred over and the wordpress stuff posts on tumblr anyway.

It's 98% garbage. You have to understand that most of the community on roll20 is made up of the rejects who can't get any other game. They NEED to achieve maximum exposure because almost every game they fling themselves at, they won't stick to.

Roll20 is efficient if gaming in real life isn't viable, but you're better off taking an existing group of friends and playing there. If you absolutely must use the LFG, you need to either have very low standards, or get ready to go through 20-30 players to find 3-4 good ones.

What is the single best campaign you've ever participated in, as a player or DM? The one you'll always remember and judge other campaigns by. Game or edition or format doesn't matter.

For myself, it'd be the three-year 3.5 campaign I DMed with an absolutely amazing group of players and concluded last year, involving a Blackguard hiding in plain sight amongst a party of Good-aligned adventurers. (He never got caught.) I stopped DMing after it ended and mostly don't play anymore, so it'll probably always remain my favorite.

I've told the story repeatedly on /tg/, but it's the one where we missed a vital clue that our GM dropped in front of us, and as a result, while our own operation went ahead perfectly, us disrupting an evil liche and by extension knocking out the legion of undead she controlled, (and a former PC turned traitor in a previous campaign, to boot), we missed another line of defense that we needed to remove to hit the ultimate objective, so as a result, we lost the war we thought we were going to win.

I've never felt a blow to the gut like that in an RPG, before or since. We spent roughly a month (real time) in that final dungeon complex, and the entire time, our GM never once gave a hint that it was all for nothing, even though it was too late by that point.

Anon, I like the minis, but I haven't played / purchased the game. I don't think it'll necessarily convert a lot of vidya players into table top gamers, and the Halo setting is somewhat of a niche setting. The other thing that may be an issue with people who are already into table top gaming is that Spartan games seems to put out a lot of game lines but isn't the most polished when it comes to rules writing / support. I'd guess that some folks are hesitant to buy in for fear that added Halo content won't arrive if the game doesn't make bucket loads of money.

So this thing has been out for a bit. Anons who've played it, what did you think?
Does having 3-4 players much better than 2? Do you feel like you need the full deckbuilding options from the 2nd core set? Are you going to try and make custom scenarios?

Is it fun?

>what did you think?
I like it a lot. A lot of flavor and story with the group I'm playing with.
>Does having 3-4 players much better than 2?
We're playing with 3 of us. Game scales well. Though I think "better" is relative to how people act when there's 2 of you vs. 3+
>Do you feel like you need the full deckbuilding options from the 2nd core set?
My group felt the need after we played through the first act. Players will find cards they didn't like or some they found useful to the way they want to play their investigator. Due to the number of players and the 2 card limit, we would need 4 or more core sets to play our decks as is. We're playing on tabletop sim so it's convenient enough to just copy paste cards to make decks. It appears they pulled a netrunner again with the core set. Future card packs look like they have enough cards for 1 player to make any deck. Maybe they expect players to bring their own decks or something.
>Are you going to try and make custom scenarios?
Already am since that was the first problem I saw with the game. FFG will need to pump out lots of scenarios to keep the game alive. And by the looks of it they are. I can see this being a big turn off for people who don't want to regularly spend $20 to get a new piece of game.
>Is it fun?
Yes. If you got tabletop sim, give it a shot. I personally don't think I'll be buying it anytime soon. Not only is it sold out, but the business model is very taxing and I don't have THAT much disposable income.

Welcome to the Accidental Magical Girl thread!

Various worlds and multiverses have become connected together via the mysterious Overcity, a sprawling landscape inhabited by monsters and magical beings. Girls and boys endowed with their new supernatural powers can work together solving conflicts that arise!

>This is NOT a greentext adventure style CYOA with one GM and thread posting to dictate the adventure, but rather a hub thread for multiple storycrafters to use. A majority of activity (including campaigns) instead happens in the IRC, which is open for newbies to join. Some players have split off and created a Discord server which can be used for the same purpose.

This thread houses three systems: First, QuasarBlack's CYOA PDFs which may be used as writing prompts. Second, AMGC which expands on the CYOA character creation and provides rules for combat. Finally, the SCS is an alternative to AMGC with a similar purpose. IRC uses mostly AMGC and Discord uses mostly SCS.

Post builds, roleplay, write stuff.

They tend to work in accounting and are quite boring at parties.

How do you prefer you spell/move names, /tg/?

1) Simple and descriptive
>Holy Power
>Magic Missile
>Fireball

2) (Less) Descriptive, but with dramatic flair
>Calling Upon Holy Power
>Purple Sun of Xereus
>Sea of Hungering Flames

3) Poetic/Dramatic, but without anything descriptive
>Caress of Laniph
>Reign of Anger
>Seven Seals of Xann

and what do you think of littering spell names with wizards'/gods'/whatever names?

Also cool spell name thread, I guess.
