Is there a way to completely burn any trace of empathy out of your brain?

I'm good with math, computers, logic, and even linguistics, so I've always figured I would be good with programming. Not as a job, but as a hobby. But no beginners tutorials I've ever looked at caught my interest. They always amounted to
>type this to make plain text appear
I've also got no clue what language to learn and don't know what any of them are for. Anyone have a good place to start?

Okay... no shitposting about the election. This isn't about being butt-blasted about >muh popular vote or anything else like that. I want to start a serious think-tank about using math to design a better electoral system in the United States.

I've been curious over the last several days if there is possibly a more efficient and "fair" voting system in America. A lot of people are seriously considering abolishing the electoral college in favor of a purely popular vote. I believe /sci/ can think up some more logical, fair systems based on simple mathematical principles.

Is there a better system out there? There are a lot of smart people on this board, so let's get a brainstorm going. The main concerns so far, at least the ones I can see, are:

-How to make sure every vote gets counted. For example, republican votes in California mean literally nothing.
-How to make sure every state and county within is weighted fairly, regardless of size.

Note: feasibility can be thrown out the window here. Obviously some systems that might work could never be implemented due to complexity/resistance from political parties. Let's focus purely on the most fair system possible and the maths behind it.

A state's electoral votes are proportionally divided according to the proportion of votes a candidate received.

in a dictatorship, every citizen's vote is of equal worth

A wired interview with Obama on AI. He talks about a danger of AI controlling and winning the stock exchange as well as how near it is to conquer the world and change life as we know it

I don't like wired or its propoganda, but how likely is it that AI will completely take over? How soon?

I know it's in its infancy but this video already made it sound like we are completely fucked.

How can natural intelligence EVEN compete?
>>
>>8500339
There is still a long way and plenty of hurdles.
The thing we should be concerned currently about is the uses of AI in the wrong hands (Big data, intelligence, economical spying, politic agendas, abuse) And our economy failing to adapt to informatization.

A real AI breakthrough, I doubt it would even be in the following decades

I can't wrap my head around this subject comfortably. I'm failiing miserably figuring out how to calculate population growth and isotope half-life.

Uni-level, but somehow I managed to forgot most about logarithms
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8499986
just think of log(1) = 0. Then play around on your calculator and you can get all laws from there. Thats how I remembered to start with, back in ye olde high skool
>>
>>8499986
Had the same problem until someone explained is this way:
Logarithm base 2 of 1 million = amount of times you can divide 1 million in two

like 1.000.000/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2...
>>
The way I think about it is, "This base to what power will give me the answer (that's already given)."
Once you grasp that, play around and find the rules.
Hint: Logarithms follow the same rules as dividing and multiplying exponents. (X2 • X3 = X^5)

Is it normal that I have to keep reminding myself that you are all humans and not just words to be read on a monitor?
If that isn't normal, then I don't know what's wrong. Is it a lack of empathy?

I cannot bring my self to create visual images no matter how hard I try. I've seen some practices where I need to visualize something with closed eyes and all I see is darkness. Is there any science for why its simply not working for me, I've been contemplating maybe that my serotonin is low or something since Im depressed as well.

I recently saw some infographs and articles online talking about how we will run out of the resources necessary to power our machines and electronics in just over 50 years.

Is this true, or is it junk science? Am I going to have to tell my grandchildren about all the wonders of science they will never behold as we sit by the fire we made by rubbing sticks together?

What resources are they referring to? As far as I know, the biggest resource issues that face modern humanity are climate change, access to fresh water, energy production, and precious metals. All of them have at least somewhat feasible technological or infrastructural solutions. How the future will pan out will be heavily decided on how we act over the next few decades.
>>
>>8497380
Basically yes, all of that.
>>
Yes anon, soon we will run out of sun.
The only actual limitation we have is budget, and radiation exposure.

>We observed that the professional lip reader is able to
correctly decipher less than one-quarter of the spoken words
(Table 5). This is consistent with previous studies on the
accuracy of human lip reading [26]. In contrast, the WAS
model (lips only) is able to decipher half of the spoken
words. Thus, this is significantly better than professional
lip readers can achieve.

okay guys, colombian here.

I'm planning on entering college here and study software engineering.

Is possible to finish my degree and then seek a scholarship in an unrelated field like literature in let's say Texas (trying to migrate legally) or it has to be a post bachelor degree on CS?

You're wasting your time. Just learn the material on your own.

>literature

You're really wasting your time. Just read books on your own and shitpost about them on a blog.

>finish my degree and then seek a scholarship

Scholarships are only for people seeking their first degree. If you want them to pay for 2 you have to double major or dual degree at the same time.
>>

no idiot.
I mean finishing first my SE degree here and then seeking a scholarship to study literature in maybe texas or florida.
