Could a civilization with a sufficient level of technology unbake a cake and extract it back into its original ingredients?

If yes would it be able to unbeat the egg back into a yolk?

What's the purpose for mining for "minerals?" What makes minerals so valuable? What applications do minerals have?

If someone is mining for gold or silver I understand. But I don't understand what makes minerals so sought after; especially when there's talk of going as far as space for looking for them

I tried to post this question on /ELI5 /AskReddit, etc, but for some fucking reason the posts weren't allowed. SO I said fuck Reddit, I'll ask 4chan.

WTF Happened to my Xmas Lights? Electronic Engineers/Smart People, I need your help!

Some backstory:

>1) Again, there are 12 strands of lights
>2) They are about ONE year old
>3) The lights have been used once, last year
>4) Lights were carefully rolled up and stored in a dry cardboard box
>5) No signs of water damage anywhere on said box
>6) ALL of the fuses are IN TACT. I checked every single one! Two fuses in each plug and they are ALL fine
>7) In my frustration I balled them up and let the cats play in them, but trust me they were rolled up carefully before I promise
>8) Forgot to mention I tested the lights in confirmed working outlets
>9) Also forgot to mention, I did not use an extension cord
>10) Last thought, when I took the lights down last year they were definitely all working

So there you have it, I stored the lights properly, yet every single strand of these lights don't work! All 12 of them! ALL TWELVE!

I am requesting you all to please theorize about what could have happened to my lights! Can you solve this fucking mystery?

Alright /sci/, what about this:

All the particles in my body rip apart for a few moments and then reassemble back in the exact spot each one used to be in. All of them are the same particles, in the same positions with the same bonds.

Am I still alive? Or is there a new me who thinks he's me?

DUTCH PROFESSOR ERIK VERLINDE OVERTURNS EISENSTEIN'S MODEL
NEW FORMULA DERIVED FROM THE HOLOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLE ANSWERS THE QUESTION OF "DARK ENERGY", AND SUPERSEDES EINSTEINIAN SPACE-TIME.
Dutch prodigy and Amsterdam University Professor Erik Verlinde published a paper on arXiv yesterday, November 7, titled "Emergent Gravity and the Dark Universe." In the paper, Verlinde derives gravity from the so-called Holographic Principle, which – simply put – states that gravity emerges from the interplay between and entropy re-arrangement of sub-atomic "strings" that live in a negatively curved spacetime. At that level […] spacetime and gravity are emergent from an underlying microscopic description in which they have no a priori meaning." Most importantly, Verlinde's paper has as a consequence that dark matter, nemesis of many an astronomer, is nothing more than an illusion. Verlinde, who was awarded the Dutch national Spinoza science prize in the recent past, already completed the tour de force of deriving Newtonian gravity from the same principles in a 2010 paper, also on arXiv. We are probably looking at Nobel-prize material here, as Verlinde is acknowledged by his peers to "go one better than Einstein's General Theory of Relativity."

> Verlinde's de Sitter MOND is highly incomplete, to say the least

> But within weeks, it became clear that his theory was just a wrong collection of speculations and misunderstandings about the relationships between the fundamental concepts of physics.

>I wouldn't okay this wrong piece of work as an undergraduate term paper but he got 6.5 millions of euros for this absolutely worthless pile of feces so many people who are impressed by the money but don't have an idea about science – which includes virtually all journalists – started to think that Verlinde is a top physicist. And he may have decided that he must justify the award by producing even greater piles of bogus hype.

>
At any rate, I do believe that if you're thinking about reading Erik Verlinde's paper but you're not certain and you have read my abstract, you may save the time because it's unlikely that you will find something important yet sensible there. I think that he wrote 51 pages primarily to create the illusion that he's doing "lots of work" on his "revolutionary" ideas. But there's really no content that would be proportional to the volume (to 51 pages) here. ;-)

>mfw I didn't answer the question I most practiced for

I may just be scraping a 60. Is this what natural selection is?

How do u git gud on which questions to answer and also why are questions allocated an absurd amount of points even though the working only requires 3 lines maximum whilst other question that are harder are given less points? I was fooled by this and went for the question that had least amount of points assuming it was easier. Was the question setter trying to help us get points?

And how do you anons feel after knowing you did bad on a test, I feel very demotivated to learn requiring several days to normalise into a normal routine of studying after constantly thinking of how to exam should have gone

On most of the days when I wasn't working, I was studying for about 10-14 hours a day. On the days when I was working, I was still doing about 6-10 hours. I went into my first of four exams and utterly bombed and came out feeling like absolute shit. I was already depressed at that stage because of other shit that was going on and I think I was legitimately suicidal (the fact I didn't have opportunity was all that stopped me).

After a few hours of feel sorry for myself post-exam, I decided to at least get my head back down and keep studying for the other three exams. There was about a month between my first exam and my last one, and by the time I finished the second exam, I had never even opened the textbook for the final exam. So I powered through the depression and just adopted the mentality that I can always kill myself when exams are over and I know exactly how poorly I did. As it turns out, I still got 85/100 on the first exam I thought I'd bombed (and 92/100, 95/100, and 98/100 on the others).

So, as tough and cliche as it is, I would say to keep powering through and find something productive to do until results come out, and you might be pleasantly surprised. There's plenty of time to be depressed later on if you actually did as shit as you think you did, but chances are you didn't.

i can attest to similar experiences. shit really fucks with you mentally.

I have heard people claim that toothaches can be "treated" by rinsing the affected tooth 3 or 4 times per day with a solution of 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (standard commercial bleach) plus a bit of baking soda - aka 'Dakin's solution.'

Others claim that this will end up damaging your oral mucosa and potentially killing your nerves, thus creating a false impression of a cure.

What's the evidence here?

Wow lucky you, I don't think there is any. Who wants a PhD?! Just make sure when you do the self study to variate the bleach concentration all the way up to 100% to be thorough.
