Groth did boring math, Von Neumann did exciting math.

>Even among mathematicians, who tend to be single-minded and highly devoted to their work, Grothendieck was an extreme case. "Grothendieck was working on the foundations of algebraic geometry seven days a week, twelve hours a day, for ten years," noted his IHES colleague David Ruelle.
Does anyone in history have him beat?

>"He was so completely unknown to this group and to their professors, came from such a deprived and chaotic background, and was, compared to them, so ignorant at the start of his research career, that his fulgurating ascent to sudden stardom is all the more incredible; quite unique in the history of mathematics."

>"Grothendieck's political views were radical and pacifist, and he strongly opposed both United States intervention in Vietnam and Soviet military expansionism. He gave lectures on category theory in the forests surrounding Hanoi while the city was being bombed, to protest against the Vietnam War."

>"In 1970, Grothendieck, with two other mathematicians, Claude Chevalley and Pierre Samuel, created a political group called Survivre—the name later changed to Survivre et vivre. The group published a bulletin and was dedicated to antimilitary and ecological issues, and also developed strong criticism of the indiscriminate use of science and technology."

>"His growing preoccupation with spiritual matters was also evident in a letter entitled Lettre de la Bonne Nouvelle sent to 250 friends in January 1990. In it, he described his encounters with a deity and announced that a "New Age" would commence on 14 October 1996."

>"Very few people visited him afterward. Local villagers helped sustain him with a more varied diet after he tried to live on a staple of dandelion soup."

what a faggot

>"How do you develop this level of dedication?"
-Have parents that micromanaged every aspect of your (private) education (Most seem to have this, Grothendieck did not)
-Be surrounded by high-achieving professors and students so that a thought of leisure or procrastination scarcely crosses your mind (Grothendieck had this)
-Have autism (Grothendieck probably had this)

I'm sure the Vietnamese rice farmers really appreciated the lecture he gave for a branch of mathematics they could not even begin to comprehend, in a language they didn't understand, far away from where any killing was happening

I agree though, I do think it's unfair how history books left out the part where Warrant Officer Grothendieck flew around his helicopter obstructing US soldiers who were massacring non-combatants

No, it's Alexander Grothendieck, a celebrated 20th century mathematician who is both genuinely good, and also a meme around these parts. Grothendieck is one of only about seventy mathematicians in history who have been awarded the Fields Medal (awarded to typically 2-4 mathematicians, /who must be under the age of forty since that's historically when mathematicians produce their best work, math is a young man's game in case you didn't know/, only once every four years), which is the highest distinction/decoration for mathematicians, if you care about bling. It is fair to say that the Fields Medal is "the nobel prize of mathematics", since the Nobel Prize itself has no mathematical category as-such.

Actually Foucault and Grothendieck have certain striking similarities as well as differences.

-They were contemporaries, having been born within a few years of each other.
-They were both high-powered French academics, having gone to the top (French) schools in their fields, and later going on to teach at top unis.
-Politically, they were both batshit insane leftists.
-They were each at the height of their respective powers in the 1960s and 1970s, which is also when each man decided to adopt the strikingly similar "bald-plus-glasses" look. At bottom, they even /look/ similar: slim/average build, the "look".

However, there are also very striking differences among the two, mainly:

-Foucault was gay as a goose, participating in hardcore leather/SM play and eventually dying of the AIDS in 1984. Grothendieck, by contrast, was not only quite straight, but /successfully/ so, having had like five children by three different women. From the evolutionary point of view, Grothendieck was well fit.
-Grothendieck outlived Foucault by a good 20 years, having withdrawn from math and academia in general later in life to live as a hermit somewhere in or near Andorra.

what's the next mathematician in line for /sci/ to worship after reddit starts circle jerking about grothendick like they did with von Neumann? I nominate dirac
>>
>>8496595
the point was to draw attention to political awareness and ethical responsibility within scientific circles in light of how the previous generation of mathematicians had been used to build the bomb (a real, reasonable concern).

you are arguing against a point no one is making (he took up arms and defended civilians or tried to educate them) to avoid acknowledging what he was actually protesting (indolence of academics when it comes to historical awareness and sense of political responsibility), which was relatively bold.

he obviously didn't - yet - abandon mathematics to focus on protest, though it was incorporated in increasing amounts in his presentations, so I've heard.
