I am wondering which books are recommended for learning math from the ground up-- from rather basic math to advanced math (middle school -> graduate school).
I am about to finish my masters of science in computer science and I can use and understand a lot of complex math but I feel like my basics are quite poor. I am wondering if there are any books which could help review the basics.

is that the hexagonal vortex of Jupiter or Saturn? why does it form in such a six-sided way? is there anything else in nature that forms these perfect hexagon shapes?
Maybe it has to do with the atomic structure? But on a macro scale? like that shape is just more stable so it naturally arises?

Is Robby's setup a legitimate scientific apparatus, or is it just made to look that way?
Things that we've ascertained from his technology and practice includes:
>mass cloning with near 1:1 matches of himself
>perfect cloaking and near-instantaneous teleportation
>matter manipulation and creation, particularly for generation of disguises to fool the townies
What's /sci/'s professional opinion on this?
Yes, of course it's real.

Yes, also flubber really exists.
Is there anything attached to that carrot or is it just hanging out there?
What's your opinion on "IQ's" in general? Like, do you think a number will determine how well you'll do in life?
>>8497427
I don't know. I'm 131 but 70k in student loan debt and have been a bum for 1.5 years. Good chance I start med school next August though.
>>8497427
>do you think a number will determine how well you'll do in life?
lol
i did the irl mensa test, 135 IQ, was a neet for 4 years, dropped out of college once, about to drop out for the second time, schizo affective disorder and i have also been lazy as fuck and anti social ever since the first day of school.
IQ is a meme, if anything, EQ is a more reliable measurement for how successful you will be, as being social usually gets you a better job.
IQ threads should be banned from /sci/ and moved to /x/, /lit/ or /r9k/.

Nope - physical attraction still puts you in a better place. Or being tall if you want to dominate.

That's called shit. Next time you have a heavy fart, sit on a toilet. It'll be easier for your mom to clean up

I know that there are a few deniers on this board, so what evidence do you have for for a global warming being a hoax? I don't want to start a flame war, I just want some evidence to be presented.

Hello /sci/, biochemistry undergraduate here.
I'll cut to the chase: I'm a sophomore, with far less expertise than people who are well qualified to do significant work in any special study area. What happened was I've become fascinated with a certain disorder and, like the adamant idiot I am, decided I want to go beyond treatment and find a possible cure. I thank the internet for being such a great repository of information, but there are two problems I'd like to consult you folk with.
1. Lingo. It's very obvious and natural that a lot of concepts are above and beyond my understanding, but I am more than willing to learn. The problem is that I need resources, books, articles or websites. I'm obviously consulting my professors, but of course I'll have to uphold my end. Anything that will give me a footing into protein folding techniques, de novo protein structure prediction and design, maybe an online repository of templates or something about protein-DNA specific interactions will do. Just to get a hang of the thing, I installed Foldit and started working on some docking problems, just to get an intuitive sense of how the thing works before I familiarize myself with @Rosetta or the likes. I have the following resources for now:
Methods in Enzymology vol. 463 - Guide to Protein Purification 2nd Ed.
Methods in Enzymology vol. 523 - Methods in Protein Design
Methods in Enzymology vol. 580 - Peptide, Protein and Enzyme Design
Any more resources will be immensely helpful.
>>8493097
2. A tad more technical. The disorder seems to arise from a tandem repeat of 1.5 Mb of DNA on the p-arm of Chromosome 17. I think my more savvy audience would want to gorge their eyes out reading this. The idea I have is designing a set of proteins (or a homolog) that first disentangles the tertiary structure of the chromosome, locate and cleave specific repetitions of a genetic cipher - with the help of a template, and recompose the chromosome. This sounds inane, but it's my working idea for now. I welcome all the insults. Was something to this effect ever attempted and, if so, would it work? I know DNA-repair is a budding science (though much, much above my head). There are just so many assumptions I'm making, so I know I'm doing wrong. The defect results in demyelination of nerve axons and progresses throughout adulthood, would something like this potentially reverse the process, if not halt it?
Very broad questions, and I'm sorry. I'm stepping in foreign territory. I just want to be of some use, so please do offer some advice. I know I'm all over the place right now, but I need some direction.
>>8493097
And this is all the theoretical aspect. I think it goes without saying that I need a deeper understanding of chemistry. This whole thing is desperate.
>>8493099
>The idea I have is designing a set of proteins (or a homolog) that first disentangles the tertiary structure of the chromosome, locate and cleave specific repetitions of a genetic cipher - with the help of a template, and recompose the chromosome.
I don't quite understand your statement. Can you explain more?
A few points.
In this context, "tertiary structure" is improperly used. Tertiary structure refers to protein structure, typically, not chromosome structure.
Second, proteins that would influence chromatin structure are histones, which DNA wraps around to form nucleosomes. This complex can be "disentangled" (as you put it) through epigenetic factors -- methylation, acetylation, etc., that target amino acid side chains of histone residues. This plays a role in transcription regulation.
I'm a CS and Math double major because C.S. is a very bare boned subject, but I don't understand why everyone here shits on it.

Because it isn't pure, the same reason they don't like engineering. I mean, there is even a divide between physics and mathematics on /sci/, simply because physics isn't as pure as mathematics is.

We may never know annon, we may never know...
is it possible to create a virus that could repair human cells and work with the host to keep it alive? Maybe repair brain tissue or any other tissues in the body that need repair on a cellular level?
>>8498448
Yes, but viral gene therapy has been held back due to a series of cancer deaths caused by the virus.
I'm a big fan of this approach though, we just have to work out the kinks.
>>8498454
interesting, maybe if they added some kind of expiration date to the virus it could be injected, do the cleaning up and then eventually die off leaving the host repaired and functioning normally again.
This type of research is fascinating. People make arguments for Nano robotics being used in medicine but a virus is basically the same thing and would probably be a lot easier to develop.
>>8498466
I think people talking about nano-robotics don't know enough about cell biology, because if they did they'd realize that the cell and the virus are already a more advanced nano-robots than anything we could create in a thousand years. Maybe there's a place for nano-particles that can be implanted into cells to enhance function, but full-fledged nano-robots will never surpass cells within this century.
