How much chemistry does a physics major learn?
It's always been one of my side interests besides physics and math.

Technically, they learn PChem in QM and Thermal Physics.
>>
There's a lot of cross-over in QM and thermal physics, but not much elsewhere. I also think it tends to be somewhat less practical and much deeper in physics.
>>

It's less important the more theoretical you are, but if you work in a research lab where it's closer to engineering, then it's pretty fucking important.

People studying cryogenic and plasma shit it's important to know a lot of material science and studying the properties that make up the fluids or what have you.

Basic atomic structure and properties of gases, metals, and metalloids I'd say was top priority.
Shit like reactions and equalibria of solutions I'd say was pretty unimportant.

Specifically with respect to race, as whites have longer torsos than blacks, and Asians have equal/longer torsos to whites.

I've seen 5'8" Asian guys sit down and be as tall as 6'2" whites. I've seen 6'2" Asians sit down and tower over white in the area.

The usual answer I've seen is something to do with Allen's rule, because long legs dissipate heat, and whites and Asians are supposedly evolved for colder climates.

However, a long torso is also bad for heat retention. A wide, thick short torso would be ideal for it, along with short, thick legs.

However, most whites and Asian people have long thin torsos and short thin legs, so I don't think it has much to do with heat transfer.

Genetically oriented answers would be appreciated. And if it wasn't obvious, "Asians" refers to northeast Asians, and not Turks/Russians/Indians/Iranians.

I'm half latino half austrian, I'm far left: super short torso and looong extremities.

I've always been self conscious about that and tried to conceal my waistline because my legs are long thin sticks and almost end at my elbows.

It look ridiculous when I put my hands in my pockets or when I have to tuck my shirt in.

I'm an adult now and have come to terms with it as there are much worse deformations to be born with but maybe this helps you getting more comfortable with your on body, whats your torso/leg ratio OP?
>>
Genetic differences are too small among humans to qualify any sort of categorization involving "race".

This study involves the genes responsible, at least partially, for torso length, based on ethnic categorization (NOT race, as race is a meaningless and ambiguous term when applied to humans)

Do more capable brains run the body in a more efficient manner?
For instance, does a "smarter" person's brain run the body at a more effecient tempurature or heart rate? Has there been any real studies on this sort of thing?
16 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
If that were the case, one might expect intelligent people to be more likely to be overweight, since their bodies would use energy more efficiently and therefore be more prone to storing it as fat.

But perhaps that would be offset by having a more metabolically taxing brain.
>>
Actually bretty good question, bump
>>
>>8557724
Unless the brain could also weigh the potential damage to the body from such a load... I think it would be interesting to study this sort of thing.

I just want to make something clear to all you naysayers out there.

This guy corrected Newton.

.

Hey kid, scoot over a sec. Oh look, you... uh... yeah you didn't really think this through, did you? I mean it's a good try, but... did you seriously believe that the laws governing us are just simple ratios and equations?

No, don't feel bad. I mean, a lot of normies out there wouldn't have been able to come up with this. It's a good try, it really is. But next time, actually stop and think about it before you just start scribbling away. It was a good attempt-

-no stop crying. C'mon, Newton, it's OK.... No I was just trying to motivate you...

I'm sorry if I went too far... C'mon. Pick that pencil up. Here, uh... here's some fresh new paper. I want you to give it your real pig in a barrel best.

Did you not know this? Who are these imaginary naysayers?
>>
Einstein actually never even knew who Isaac Newton was

he had no access to the internet so most likely did not know who Newton was and his work at the time
>>
>>8557314
Well Newton literally didn't have the mathematical tools for general relativity yet. Though it's interesting to think about how if Newton had thought about the concept of light and velocity addition he probably should have been able to deduce special relativity.

What does /sci/ think of meditation?

Does it actually improve you in the ways people claim it does?

Can meditation improve your cognitive functioning in a way that helps you learn new things more effectively?

Do you meditate?

I have anxiety so meditation has been a godsend for me. I don't know if I would go so far to say that it improves overall cognitive functioning but it definitely has some mental health benefits.

I think the key isn't that meditation "improves" you but it teaches you how to deal with stress. Less stress is going to have a number of benefits.

I haven't been meditating every day like I used to because school has gotten in the way. I still use the mindfulness techniques and grounding methods to reel myself in almost daily though. I have to walk to most of my classes so I often do it then and focus my attention on the present. I've calmed myself down very quickly in stressful situations too thanks to my strengthened ability to control my focus.

The only key sleep cycle is rem sleep, an average person can suffice with about 3 hours of rem sleep a night. There have been numerous studies into the human sleep cycle that illustrates that removal of rem sleep results in the adverse psychological affects. So no, you cannot at this time removal all your time spent sleeping.
