if i remember correctly the highest point in florida is like 150 feet above sea level.

there probably are some limestone ledges, but no real rock faces. just go a little north. the appalachians start up there.

Know any place out of state worth the drive ?

i never spent much time in florida. the blue ridge mountains start in upper georgia. i did some boy scouts stuff in tenesse and arkansas. sorry but i really don't know, i never spent enough time in florida itself. i bet there are some limestone outcrops that people climb around there. your best bet is to join a gym and ask, or get good with your google-fu.

Skiing is expensive.
Girls with rich dads get to go.
Rich men marry pretty women and have pretty daughters.
Rich people are more attractive than poor people
>>
>>657203
+1. Not just that the sport is expensive, but the vacations too.

And whenever you are doing something that requires a bit of physical activity, the girls will be looking decent. It's like asking why girls at the gym are looking good.
>>
>>657202
It's because they're all covered up. From head to toe. Ever watch the winter x games and think "that snowboard chick is pretty hot?" Then you see her later on during an interview without the jacket, hat, goggles and think "damn, what the hell happened?!" True, some of them are cute but most of the time they only appear that way because you're only seeing part of their face.

What's up /out/ I'm lookin to get into backpacking. I've done a bunch of camping and hiking in my life along with other outdoor recreation like skiing and etc, but I'm now looking to get into a new outdoor sport that will really test my mind and body and i want to do some long hikes ( 5-6 days, lots of miles and maybe a thru hike someday if I like it enough.)

So I have two questions for you guys:

A: what are some great places to do said backpacking ?

B: what are some examples of gear you would all consider neccesary ?

I already have a lot of things I need but Im in the market right now for a sleeping bag/ pad specifically and a backpack if you guys have any suggestions. Any other input is also appreciated.

Pic semi-related, some random gear I laid out awhile back for camping

A: In the forest, mountains and desert. Anywhere away from people really.

B: Shelter, Sleeping gear, cooking gear, food, appropriate clothes and something to carry the gear in.
>>
>A: what are some great places to do said backpacking ?
Well that obviously depends on where you live. If you're British like me, going to Scotland is best because of the much more relaxed wild camping laws.
>>
That's a lot of weight to pack for any length, especially multi-day. That's not to say you need to go 100% lightweight gearfag.

I'd look into getting a good bladder system for water instead of your collapsible container.

Go with lighter food options, denser calories like salami, or freeze dried.

I believe I see an air pump. If so, that's a luxury for car camping, honestly.

I don't see a tent, but I see two tarps. Nothing wrong with that, if that's your jam.

Your spool of cord is way too big/thick. It's a little tacticool, but paracord is universally accepted to be the best for size/durability/cheap. 5 bucks for 100 feet on military base, or about 7-8 bucks online. Can come with reflective strips, or any color you'd want. You could do away with the bungee cords too.

Binoculars are another one of those luxuries I don't believe is worth the weight. Your own two eyes will be more than enough to enjoy the beautiful views, and we both know you're just going to take a zoomed in picture from your phone.

Your first aid kit is store bought, and not made for realistic needs. You can probably remove 80% of what's in it, because it's obviously a cars first aid kit. Some wrap and gauze is about all you need. Maybe some band aids, tweezers a tiny mirror (trust me, to dress wounds on your face) and some aspirin.

I'm not saying your kit is shitty, or you should redo all of it. I'm just giving some advice that I learned the hard way, because I can remember when I first started, too.

Being /out/ is your own experience to you, and you alone. So ultimately do whatever the fuck your ideal wilderness situation is. Just respect the land, and other people's versions of what they want.

Good luck, and you're off to a great start!

I'm working on turning my spare phone into a dedicated /out/ device. Got a life proof case for it for 10 bucks on woot!

Good luck, brother.

Platts-fag here. Where are you?

Hey hunters, what book would you recommend for studying up on animal tracks? I know that experience is the best teacher but I have no one to show me the ropes.

I've gone with a few guys on truck hunting (which is not my thing) and I've learned how to gut, but now I'd like to pack up my stuff and walk into the bush tracking my game.

I've got the gear, knives, guns, etc, but I don't know how to read the tracks, the land on the migration, diet of game animals, that kind of shit.

Any good books I can read before next hunting season?

it is for the people. if you dont like how theyre managed, you work with other people who agree to advocate for a management change until you have a sizable interest group.

while resorting to Ad Hominem is a lame approach to an argument, Cliven Bundy himself is not one to talk about public land. id like to flood that fuckers mailbox with copies of A Sand County Almanac in the off chance the last few chapters hit home.

Wanna buy a gun that's a good all around bush and hunting gun on a budget. I've been looking at the Remington 700 ADL in 30-06, though i've heard the action is kind of sloppy. Any suggestions? Also post your bush guns!

You know the right choice op. Or a mares leg, can't shill for those enough.
>>
>>656210
What do you plan on hunting OP? 30-06 is pretty big for most game, unless you're around moose and brown bear, then it's useful.

It does kind of limit your options for smaller game, but the 30-06 is a tried and tested caliber that is very popular, easy to find ammo, and relatively affordable to shoot.

Personally I'm a fan of Savage rifles. They just shoot great. For a bush gun, you want it to be durable, so I'd get a stainless barrel model. Personally I like .308 since ammo is affordable, and you can get near match grade loads from factory ammo (I distance target shoot some).

The only Remington 700 I've ever shot is a 700 SPS, in 22-250. Nice little gun, no complaints, action was solid.

not really but I've found some ammonites fishing. Some other fisherman found an entire t-rex skeleton in a place where I fish some years ago after some flooding. Basically embedded in a cliff wall. Generally where I fish is a very fossil rich area.
>>
>>654943
Where do you usually fish? I've heard there's some Cenozoic stuff on some kansas lake shores

I'm a quaternary scientist, not exactly paleo but hey ho. If I ever come across an exposed soil horizon I sometimes have a scrape at it. I then sit at camp and have a think if I'm alone and bored.

Hey /out/

There is a remote location that needs power. Helicopter can't get in. Current weak snowmobiles couldn't make it.

I'm planning to snowshoe in. It's 19km from the nearest public road. It's up a mountain quad trail.

I'll wear snow shoes. Viking rubber boats with multiple wool socks, with polypropaline base layer. Pants with snow pants on top. Layers, maybe two jackets with sweaters (I can always take one off). Gloves.

I'll be pulling a generator on a sled. Probably weighs 80 or so lbs.

Lots of food. 14+litres of water.

Thoughts?

My first thought is what is it you need to power? How many watts is the total of what you'll be using in that location?

What are you fueling the generator with, if anything and what kind of generator is it?
>>
>>652059
Need to power a radio communications system.
It's for a rural firedepartment, school district, first responders. It's gone out at the worst possible time.

5 to 24watts.

Gasoline generator. It has been used at high altitude before.

Ah... been there, done that.
Tracked ATV might be a better choice over a snowmobile, depending on the terrain and amount of snow.

Are you sure it's without power, or did a controller/repeater die? Or some other equipment failure (Combiner, antenna, feedline, power dist.)?
Do you have anything alive on the site? (POTS? IP? Microwave?)

If it's a digital (P25 or DMR) system, I'd set up a 2nd/3rd repeater temporarily and link them over IP or P2P microwave until you can get to the primary and get it back online. Slam in the codeplug the primary's got with a few tweaks (site name and IP, mostly), dial in the combiner, get an antenna up, and let 'er go for a while. FCC's usually pretty good about amending licenses in emergency situations, especially for emcomms. Primary license may even allow for that already.

District I worked with bitched and screamed about all the "extra shit" I was buying (RTCM's and power control relay modules mostly)... until "Hey, ___ equipment isn't working, when can you get up there and check it out?" ... remote in from my house, see what's going on, and had the system back up in less than 15 minutes... they quit bitching about the "extra shit" after that incident.
