Could a top-of-the-line GoreTex cycling jacket also be used as a three-season backpacking softshell/waterproof jacket? What would be the pros and cons?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>656100
Can you fit your insulation below it? Is it durable enough (three layer laminate, top fabric strength)? Is it long enough to cover your ass if you so wish? Will you not miss the pockets or the hood?
>>
>>656100
It'll work but most bike jackets have shitty pockets and are cut short in front (and tbqh, these days a lot are too short in back to be ideal for cycling). You might be better off cycling in a backpacking jacket, as long as it has decent vents and a double zipper.

The main benefit of my bike jacket over my hiking jacket is it rolls up smaller in my bag when I'm not wearing it.
>>
Your main concern will be your pack belt and shoulder straps rubbing away at the goretex. My macpac coat has pertex reenforcements.

I'm looking for suggestions, advice, and general discussion about 72hr+ survival bags. I've started assembling mine, and would like tips from anyone who's got experience with it.

Ideally I would be assembling a bag that allows for an extended stay, assuming I can get fishing, snaring, or small game shooting to provide some meals.

Additionally, what do you think about packing a tent + sleeping bag onto an emergency survival bag? In theory I would keep them separate, but strap them onto my bag if I felt the circumstances called for them.

I've watched a lot of videos on the subject, but many of them seem to be missing the point of a lightweight bag for hoofing it into the mountains.

I intend to assemble it, and take it out for a 4 day stay in the mountains, and see how well it serves me. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so I'd be in the Cascade range. Probably on the cooler/wetter side towards Western Washington.

Thanks.

>what do you think about packing a tent + sleeping bag onto an emergency survival bag?
a tent could be replaced by tarp to save space but a sleeping bag is well worth the extra space it takes (along with a sleeping mat for insulation)
you could save space with compression sack tho
>>
>>642350
>Compression sack

I'll look it up. I haven't used one before. I've always gone camping with some huge bag that seems to hold everything for 5 days+.

I've got a few of those sleeping mats. I actually forgot about them somehow... I'll go put those with my supplies now.

don't pack food in a "survival bag" your not going to die from starvation in 72 hours.

Go to REI and buy a $200 tent. Cut it into pieces to make your tarp tent. Go backpacking realize as you are dying that tarp tents are shit.

Its a new year! Its the middle of winter and I want to go camping /o/ What are your plans for when the weather warms up? Its about this time of year when I get the itch for camping and kayaking but dont want to freeze while sleeping and am not keen on trying to blaze a path through ice with my boat. What trips are you planning?

Every other year before this one, I have stopped fishing during the coldest winter months. This winter, I vowed to keep fishing all winter, spring, summer, and fall. So far, it's been fun but cold. Lucky for me the winter has been mild this time.

Thats got to be nice! Is it warm enough to sleep outside comfortably for the most part? I have seriously been debating on getting snow shoes just so i can still venture into the woods

I'm right near Binghamton too, there isn't a whole lot of places close by, but get up to the Adirondacks and you've got some of the best spots in the country.

Chenango Valley State park is alright to check out, it's close by, but pretty developed in most of it, but it's good to just get out and day hike it.

Oakley Corners forest is outside of Owego. It's nothing special, but no one is there when I go. You can kind of explore it in peace. Pretty small though.

For hunting, head south into Pennsylvania off the Great Bend Exit (first in PA off I-81) pretty good sized state game lands with some decent hunting.there's another good game lands south of Apalachin, take Pennsylvania Ave (858) south until you run into it.

There's a PA state park in Susquehanna County just south of Binghamton. It's Salt Springs State Park. Has some hiking trails, gets crowded around the falls, but the side trails are fine to explore on a day hike. Take 29 south from Conklin maybe 8 miles into PA, turn right on to Silver Creek rd.

Much else and you have to travel. I have trouble finding decent places to go /out/ around here.
>>
>>656617
Forgot to add Ketchumville state forest, close to Oakley Corners. It's undeveloped, no marked trails. There and Oakley Corners you can dispersed camp.
>>
>>656617
Ive ran at CV state park a few times for cross country races but i never knew there was hiking to do. i always thought it was just "Camping" sites and family picnics.

>live in backwater village in Sweden
>due to low pop there is lots of land sold in the area is sold for symbolic prices like 1 SEK (about 10 cents in USD) for a hundred acres plus permits to build houses for 10000 SEK (1000 USD)

Just exactly how does this work in general? Are you just buying yourself costs?

Yeah

Land that aren't crops or have buildings in the area are free to roam by anyone

(pic was a church that was also sold for 1 SEK to some family that now live there. Condition was the upkeep and that it is landmarked, the municipality could no longer pay for it)

Silly thread but it's a nice departure from the norm I'll bite.

-Gravity manipulator to make your pack weigh less or nothing
-A solar panel that wirelessly and extremely quickly charged any electronic device ( a stretch I know)

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Your water bottle idea is great OP.

Is it a retarded idea to go out in wilderness (mostly a forest and lake area) for a few days? I'm currently stressed out by some stuff and want to go somewhere calm. I've been learning bushcraft for a few years on and off, so I think I will survive.

What do you want to remind me of? Are there any precautions? Also, how do I avoid getting robbed/assaulted while sleeping?

If you want to destress, go to a lale with hella steak, a canoe, and some pot or beer.

Also, its winter, so pack for warmth. Its always colder than you think itll be.

No. Everyone here greatly exaggerates dangers while out to make their lives seem more exciting. You'll be fine.
>>
>Also, how do I avoid getting robbed/assaulted while sleeping?

You don't. It happens to everyone so just be mentally prepared. Or alternatively you could do the raping and robbing. Your choice

Let's say I walked to the Scottish Highlands and kept going North and staying generally to the far North of Scotland. No tent, too broke to even afford one. Only a medium backpack, clothes on my back, including waterproofs, gloves, a hat.

How would I survive without relying on civilisation? I assume there would be plenty of fresh water and scarce but hopefully sufficient for survival forageable food. My main concern would be shelter/ surviving weather.

Thoughts? Tips on food sources and shelter ideas for someone in that situation? Perhaps using natural landmarks as shelter or even dead trees? I know it sounds ridiculous, but I'd like to think it's possible.

The best foraging is trashcans. Also some bins have knives you can use to protect yourself. Sleep in McDonalds bathrooms or crawl into the attic. You will be fine m8. Live your dream. Allahu ackbar salamimylaykun

Thanks. I've browsed 4chan frequently and infrequently since 2005, but this is my first post on /out/. I expected more hostility, it's warming to get a genuine reply. I'll keep your advice in mind, though I was considering more living in wooded areas and wilderness than a place with a lot of mcdonalds and trashcans.
>>
I would highly suggest getting a tent of some sort. Sleeping without shelter will be extremely difficult, especially in a place like Scotland.

Those of you who live in or have visited Southeast Alaska, what was your experience like?

Recently, I visited Haines and I had the time of my life. The community is SUPER nice, great food, INCREDIBLE scenery, great trails, gorgeous lakes, and an awesome radio station (KHNS). I really couldn't be more fond of Haines, however I've only visited Haines and Juneau in S.E. Alaska. Is there anywhere else that I should go when I decide to go back to Haines again?

Post pics of your travels in Southeast Alaska too if have them.
