What's the desert like, /out/?

It seems a little alien and almost mystical, like if you spent the night in a cave there, you might feel like you're on another planet.

I'm from Minnesota though, so maybe I'm just mistaking an overheated sandbox for exotic adventure.

Either way, I'd like to visit one sometime. Maybe just something as simple as a weekend at a hotel and taking public transit to a nice place to wander around for a few hours.

Should I do it? Or should I spare myself the next 10 years of trying to get the sand out of anything I bring with?

I have a weird relationship with the desert. Whenever I'm in it, I want to leave. But whenever I leave, it doesn't take too long for me to feel drawn back to it.

That being said, some deserts are much better than others.
>>
Deserts are magical places. Go in the spring with some friends, camp out, and go hiking. You'll never forget it.
>>
I will never forget Arizona.
The colorful rock formations, the dry, dusty atmosphere, the hot orange-tinged sand. You find cacti and shrubs everywhere, and tons of desert mice. But the greatest part of it is looking up at that endless sky at dusk. The way the sunlight bounces off the pillars of rock are breathtaking. It gets better at nightfall. There is no light pollution out there, especially in the northeast bu the Indian reservations. I have never seen so many stars in my entire life. It all comes together to make you feel so small, but appreciative of the beauty surrounding you.

I have an old WWII 100% wool blanket that I got from a local military surplus store last year. Does anyone know a good way of cleaning it? I assume throwing it in a washing machine is a bad idea. I am not very knowledgable on this stuff.

I think modern wool is treated, whereas natural sheep's wool just has a smell to it. I have an Italian army blanket that I have to keep locked up because my dogs obsess over the smell, and I'm sure they'd pee on it, given the opportunity.

I know how you feel OP, I barely got to use my new reel last year due to drought and fishing restrictions laid down by the state. All of my high lakes are snowed in right now and my pos car can't hang. Probably still at least 2 months left before I can start hitting it hard ;_;

How should one deal when hiking with a partner who has asthma? A few friends of mine are coming into my town over the next couple of weeks and there's a girl among them who is about 240 pounds and has asthma.

When I learn how out of shape she was I suggested that they not bring her along, but they are adamant that she really wants to see the hills.

It's about a 6 mile hike on a really gentle incline but the pathway is rocky and uneven. What can be done to not wear the girl down or flare up her asthma?

Hello /out/.
After living my entire life thus far surrounded by woodland and being able to do whatever I wish whenever. I will be returning to my university in a city of almost 3 million people. I would not consider myself a prepper by any means but I am an avid outdoorsman and have spent more of my life innawoods than inside. What I ask of you guys is what I could potentially bring with me to prepare for any unforeseen circumstances. Obviously no guns, bombs, or anything not allowed in an anti-gun city or a college campus. Just things that could help me thrive if things go down. So any urban guys out there want to spread some wisdom? Also general Urban Survival thread I guess.

Are you me?

I think one of the more important things to have is a way to purify water. In Houston, where I attend school, there is no shortage of rainwater. Flooding is an issue as a result, and I think the city getting BTFO by floodwaters is one of the more realistic survival challenges here. Floodwater, like all surface water in the city, is going to be contaminated with a nasty mix of industrial chemicals and the feces of the homeless. Boiling would help, but I would feel a lot safer with a nice filter. Water filtration is a broadly useful /out/ tool, anyway. I also keep flashlights, batteries, matches, a knife, and a portable radio around, but those are basic tools more than survival - specific ones.

I would also feel a lot safer having a gun for when Jamal from Acres Homes comes to kill me and take my stuff, but that'd not really an option.

In case of floods, you'll need an saw so you can cut down doors and build a raft. You're going to need at least 500 ft of rope in case the college campus collapses into a large sink hole. A solar blanket would be beneficial when the solar flares come (twice per year usually but probably more at your college). Bear mace can help defend you when you trigger feminists. You'll need a life-straw in case of drought like California is having right now; you can't drink dirty toilet water without one. Last but not least, carry a hammer so you can take your own life if things get really bad. I carry all of these things around everyday and although I have never used them, I'll be prepared when the day comes. Good luck to you OP, and godspeed.
