I'm tired of laboring for someone else to survive
What books do you recommend to learn how to live off the fat of the land? preferably with as little commercial consumption as possible (ie. expensive camping gear and weaponry)
Not talking about going off the grid here, just want the piece of mind that I can keep myself alive without external support
Just start your own business. Get rich enough to buy a modest plot of land, turn the land into farmable acreage. Start a farm, get a wife with big birthing hips and big soft titties.
Have a bunch of kids.
Have land to go /out/.
Have a hot wife.
Win.
All these retards who think flipping burgers is "laboring for others" and harder than scavenging the woods in December for nuts and berries
First thing junior is learning to care for yourself. Once you get that mastered let us know.

Hey /out/, what are some good sleeping pads for a good price?
I am trying to start camping again after a long hiatus and I've always slept on the ground but if i can recall correctly if was fucking freezing and uncomfortable.
I also remember it being cold enough for frost in the mourning so decent insulation would be nice.
It would be preferable if they were somewhat long as i am on the tall side.
Thanks
Sleeping pad ? That a new thing that hippies use on the PCT ? If a wool blanket or tarp wont work. Stay home or at the hotel. Leave the woods for hikers. In scandavia you would get your ass kicked for suggesting such shit,.
I got one of the cheaper thermarest closed cells, ridgewhatever. It was $30 on sale. I've been sleeping out in Colorado springs the last two days, it's pretty great.

Retard.
Pads are the way to go.
I have overcome my prejudice and switched to air.
I like Klymet pads. The Inertia XL is a nice one pound pad. The Recon Scout about half. It rolls to the size or a banana, really.
Pure unadulterated comfy: Big Agnes insulated Q-Core. None finer, about two pounds.
My next, Neoair Exo-therm. Light and hig r value, so $.
Klymets pic related.
What the hell happened to Les Stroud? Survivorman used to give me romantic feels, now he just whines about greenpeace stuff, what to frick??? Old age dementia? I guess one should never trust a canadian, "the first country to embrace multiculturalism". Pretty dissapointing I have to say, seeing my teenage idol turn red.
i lost track of him sometime around all his skwautch nonsense a couple years ago
He's still doing new episodes of survivor man.
Has anyone here run into illegal drug farms or labs? Or had the police search your camp or farm because they thought it was one?
How did it go down, and how can I avoid either situation?
>these are actual concerns in USA, along with bumping into ghetto thugs or trigger happy autists
>>654693
So you're here to tell me that no one in the world outside of the US illegally produces drugs?
>>654727
Nope, just you and Columbia
Is it still possible to backpack through America? I'm becoming increasingly... depressed about my life and I would like to see many things that I have not. I get motion sick in cars, and I do not have a license, so I am left with either my feet or a bike.
I planned on working and saving up in order to buy the supplies I need, and I am curious if it would be better to simply walk or ride. I figure walking would be cheaper but not as effective. I am also a little worried about being hit by a car whilst biking and also not being able to take in as much, if that makes sense. I also thought about hiking the AP but I feel that it's so routine now and there isn't much wonder left beyond testing yourself.
What do?
>>660616
America is pretty big so if you don't want to hitchhike, the bike is a better bet than feet, though people have walked it. Our very own Tourfat biked it with no preperation, and so can you.
>What do?
Go for a weekend trip, then a week, get a feel for what it's like, and it won't be as scary.
I say bike or motor bike.
>>660616
>motion sick in cars
You may find you don't if you are in control of it.
>>660620
>Tourfat
Yep and there was also bamboo bike bro and postie bro in Aus.
>>660644
No, I get motion sickness whether I am driving or not. Had a learner's permit thinking the same thing and no, still sick.
So guys, I live in Boise, ID and I had a sudden realization. There is an insanely large chunk of land of just nothing Between Eastern Oregon, Southwest Idaho, and Northern Nevada.
No seriously, aside from an Indian Reservation, and a few towns of ten people. there's absolutely nothing there!
It's because there's no water. And since there's no one for miles around, how would one go about surviving and dicking around out there?
tl;dr - How would one go about surviving in the Owyhee Canyonlands?
Have fun getting murdered by a cult and/or the military.

Anyone have advice?
Tl;dr: asking for advice on growing plants indoors using aquaponics and LED lighting
Pic related: advice our president should follow before he fucks us all even more
Aquaponics creates excellent plant growth in a limited amount of space. But you live in a sunny, warm country with plenty of farmland. So whatever you grow will probably cost more than your competition so what's your angle? You need to figure that out first before you start delving into what grow-lights or aquaponics system you should buy.
What kinds of specialty produce can you grow that isn't being covered by the market already, but yet has enough demand that you can sell everything you produce?
Are there ethnic minorities of substantial population from say, China, who miss specialty ingredients like Chinese Watercress (Ipomoea aquatica)?
You need to figure that out first and do all the math before you get started, or least start out small as a side business and try to grow it slowly.

dont listen to this idiot
just read up man
if you cant understand the material then find better material
>>665538
Not green. You know how plants look green to us? That's because they reflect green light. Stick with red, warm white, cool white, blue. Do research wavelengths, see what works best for photosynthesis (general ranges as well as individual plant preferences).

I'm planning a 1-2 week road trip to the west/south west in the spring. I live in Wisconsin, and am looking for the best places to do day hikes out there. There's so many spots I'm interested in, I don't know which to pick. Here are some places I'm interested in checking out, let me know which one of these is the best because I can only see a couple of them.
Canyonlands - Utah
Grand Teton - Wyoming
North Cascades - Washington
Santa Fe Nat. Forest - New Mexico
San Juan Mountains - Colorado
Medicine Bow National Forest - Wyoming
North Dakota Badlands (Maybe?) - North Dakota
If anybody has any suggestions of the best places to do day hikes in the west/south west that aren't on the list, let me know.
you are me... that's just weird your trip is almost pretty close ish to mine, I also live in WI but was planning more for the summer
anyroad, here are the things that that im doing :
West Yellowstone and Big Sky mt. Montana
Bob Marshall Wilderness - longer ~ 2 day hike to the top and back of prairie reef I was there it was epic
kayaking in Seattle, Lopez island
Six Rivers National Forest
some trails near Boulder CO and the Arapaho National Forest
and finally the Pawnee National Grassland
I was also at the badlands cool but not worth a whole day in my opinion half day at best but when i was there it was super hot and that's not really my preferred temp it will probably be better when/if you are there in the spring
>>665456
Last year I went to South Dakota Badlands/Black Hills combo. Black Hills was a lot cooler than badlands.
What's at pawnee national grassland?

I love listening to bands like Agalloch when /out/, really gives you that lonely forest feel and makes you appreciate the woods, really changes the experience for me. Also Empyrium.
Awww shit is it time? Love me some music threads.

What are your thoughts on foregoing a long term partner and having kids, in order to have the freedom to be outside?
>>650795
> thoughts
I like pussy, never kept me from doing what I wanted.
Why forego, why not both?
>>650795
Hike the AT, there's pussy in every town along the way that knows you're just passing through and they love the idea of the strong, self-sufficient man.
Like most of you have a choice.
Go ahead and pretend you are "foregoing" women so you can spend more time squatting in the neighborhood park, or being fat under a tarp.
>You have been rated qualified and referred for the position of Wildland Firefighter (Range/Forestry Aid/Technician), GS-03
So by just knowing math I got rated at level 3.
What am I getting myself into?
Did I apply to a /out/ job?
It's more out than most jobs, but it's not at all being close to nature.
Prepare to have your world turned upside down with the politics of the fire service. It's the most disheartening experience of my life. The system is so broken, and inefficient it's a literal waste of tax payer money.
Did 3 seasons, one as a captain, and had to report a guy for swimming while we were on the clock. He got fired on the spot.
It's boring as shit, and the work is pretty demanding in waves. Also you don't get to choose your company, and that makes or breaks the job.
Have fun your first year. Don't lose sight that your position is being happy to be on a big red truck. Then get out before it taints you.
>>664201
Damn son you sound bitter as coffee.
Really bummed me out.
I just wanted to chop trees and throw flares into the woods
>>664201
damn, what agency/park/forest did you work for? All the fire guys I know love their job. Also...wouldn't swimming on the clock, you know, be highly discouraged?
Most of fire seems not to mind doing PT and tool maintenance when they're not on actually on a fire.
Is there any reason I shouldn't buy a 4 season tent as my first tent purchase? I want to be able to buy something that can be used anywhere through the year.
Anyway yeah is there a reason not to use a single wall 4 season tent in the summer? If so why don't they just call them winter tents?
>>658482
If you live anywhere with true 4 seasons you will find out pretty quickly why you dont want a "four season" tent
4 season tents are heavy and bulky
Where are you going op? Extreme alpine adventures or Limeyand?
>>658482
4 season tents are designed for "all four seasons," so you would be able to use it in the summer too. It's a nylon cave that protects you from the elements, not much can go wrong. The main disadvantage would be the weight. Winter tents need to deal with snow-loading on the side walls and potentially the roof, so they are built extra strong, which results in extra weight and bulk.
Another, not so obvious, disadvantage is that winter tents are often made to minimize ventilation - if there's a constant breeze coming into your tent in the winter, it will chill you faster than if the inside were more protected from the elements. At the opposite end of the spectrum, summer and 3-season tents are made to maximize ventilation, and there's a reason for this: internal condensation.
The inside of a tent is always going to be warmer and more humid than the cool night air outside. That means that condensation builds up on the inside of your tent through the night. This is water that can become significant and drip down onto your sleeping bag, and which, at the extreme, could be a danger to your safety. The less ventilated design of a winter tent is a compromise, even in the winter. Trust me, you WANT lots of mesh to be used in the inner walls of your tent in order to maximize ventilation as much as possible. Staying dry at night is paramount in wilderness safety, even in the summer.
Considering that winter tents are also more expensive, I really wouldn't get one as my only tent. You can use a 3-season tent in the winter if it's not snowing hard, and if it does snow hard, you just get out of the tent periodically to brush off snow. Most of your camping will be in non-snowy conditions, though. To contrast, your 4-season tent will be heavy and balmy the majority of the time you're in it, with the extra strength only paying off maybe once or twice every few years, unless you are a serious alpine camper, in which case you wouldn't be asking here.
Does anyone else feel it's nearly impossible to catch fish when the water is cold? I only catch fish in summer, when the water is warm like bath water. If I leave my rod out for 2 hours, I may get ONE bite from a catfish. Maybe. As far as panfish and everything else? Not a chance.
Anyone else feel this way, or have similar frustrations you wanna share? It pisses me off to no end that I live in Louisiana, sports mans paradise, and can barely catch any fish while other guy are catching 50+ a day.
Feel free to bitch as well, get all those frustrations out anons
Bitching general
>>650849
Maybe you should be less of a bitch and learn how to change tactics.
Fishing isn't just sitting in the same spot with the same bait hoping to get the same fish.
It takes skill and understanding that's why its called fishing not catching.
On a side note got skunked today but it happens so no worry.
>>650857
So are you saying that fish bite the same in cold water as they do in warm?
Also how is throwing smelly bait that I know they love a tactic that needs changing?
dear /out/
im thinking of starting a hobby as a amateur astronomer. I have always enjoyed space and want to start this up.
anyone on this board an astronomer or do this as a hobby already?
any tips or gear that is cheap/helpful.
I currently live outside Philadelphia so light pollution in my backyard is an issue, but Lancaster has always shown good promise.

You should start with a decent pair of binoculars (I have 7x50s) and a star chart app for your phone, to learn your way around the sky. Then think about getting a telescope.
