Hey friends, Brit here, basically I quit my Job and im heading to Queenstown on the 31st of Jan.

Taking my bike and gunna be cycling north.

A few things I guess:
Any things I should definitely check out while I'm in the country?
Any relevant tips/experiences?
Any questions about my trip?

And of course if any New Zealanders or whoever fancied taking me in for a night or two or joining me along the way that would be cool.

Check out Wanaka, Mount Aspiring National Park and try a hike to the Kitchener Valley (a tough hike, though only a day). Also, if you can, try the Welcome Flat walk on the West Coast, it has great hotpools at the end.

Also bike around the lake in Queenstown, Glenorchy and Paradise are beautiful (or at least used to be).

Accomodation will be tough in Queenstown. If you get sick of it, stay in Wanaka. It's what Queenstown used to be.

Don't bother going to Invercargill/Bluff, it is hell on earth. But the surrounding areas are beautiful, especially Lake Hauroko and Manapouri. Catlins are kind of overrated, but they have shitloads of sea lions.

Christchurch, Dunedin and Kaikoura aren't really worth visiting. They're dumps. Cities in NZ are all ugly apart from Auckland.

I would host you but I'm living with parents so can't. You could probably get a job in Wanaka if you ask for Roger North at the lakefront Kai Whaka Pai cafe and ask. He's a good guy, if a typical arrogant boss. You can play that though.
>>
>>656013

Oh yeah and the Abel Tasman National Park is beautiful. Almost tropical. Best beaches in the country by far, especially Anchroage/Torrent Bay.
>>
Moreover if you're cycling North go via the West Coast. It might rain (a lot) but it is by far the most beautiful part of the country. Bring mosquito repellent. What it looked like before colonisation mostly.

what's more important when making a shelter?

staying off the ground
staying out of the wind
having cover over your head

I see so many kinds of shelters, but no real comparison between them
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
All three are importanr, with being off the ground the least important part of the shelter. That has more to do with your bed/sleeping arrangements, and less to do with your actual shelter.
>>
Just get a hammock and you can be a hipster faggot always they to figure out why it doesn't work.
>>
The idea is to get off the ground to provide insulation while you sleep, block the wind so that too doesn't rob you of your body heat and cover your head from precipitation. If you know the weather you can decide which is more important but you really should take all three into account

alright, head to a town called vernonia. be careful. if you blink, you'll miss it. once you make it, head out past the millpond, hang a left and drive forward for 30-45 minutes until you hit mist. Once there find a logging road, any logging road. head out for 15 minutes sti your car, pick a nice site and build you a cabin. live there for 10 years while doing forestry work like planting trees, clearing out invasive species, and other woody goodness. around fall, hunters will start showing up with beer and weed. let them in and you'll start recieving venison. After 10 years, head down to the city council with proof of improvement to the land, and proof of squatting. then live happy on your 10 acres tax free as long as you maintain the land.

Your hypothetical challenge is to live in the wild for one year without being found by another human being.

You have US$20,000 to do what you want with. You don't have to live from the land.

What would you do?

That is no challenge.
That is literally easy as fuck.

without who looking for me?

i can easily do it with 5k if its just another guy.

i cannot do it at all if there are predator or global hawks looking for me. unless i am living in deep caves.

your idea is too loose to make it even cool. i buy 20k worth of food and go live in a cave.

This is dangerous chit, is it not?

Lakes by me don't look like they will freeze over this winter so in lieu of ice fishing I may get out in the canoe. Water will still be 35ish degrees and very lethal. Anyone canoe in the winter on water this cold? Anything I should know? What safety precautions do you take in winter?

I don't know much about canoeing but wear a life vest, it will stop you're heart from exploding if you happen to fall in, it's not about drowning

Dry suit not recommend, dry suit is mandatory, lot of solo sea kayaker stories of them going hypothermic trying to get back into the boat. Keep a bilge pump w you and a paddle float (if solo boating to get back into your canoe,)
Leave a RAD plan w folks, (route, area, destination) w a turn around time, worry time, call 911 time
Properly fitted type 3 pfd
Thermos w hot drink (if you go in, you'll need to rewarm internal and w exercise,) extra layers,

Lets have a State/Province/Country (for you euros) thread. List two great things about your place, and then two bad ones.

Plenty of fishing all year round, you can basically walk 10 miles in any direction and hit a body of water.
Storms are fantastic spring through summer, nothing like sitting on the porch listening to the tornado sirens while watching a twister rip up the landscape a few miles away.

Unfortunatly, all the rivers are polluted to hell and back, so things like swimming or eating fish you've caught can get you violently ill.
The storms in winter are cruel and brutal, -60F with 8ft of snow and 4 inches of ice on the streets is the norm.

It's not yet the season for it, but you can already start making plans for the upcoming spring/summer to start making your own treehouse (or for your kids or whoever). Check it out:

This thread seems the most related to what I'm looking for.

We're organizing our scout camp for this summer, we have around 1km of pine pole ranging from 3.5m to 5m and I'm looking for plans or idea for constructions.

Our section is rather small and we only got back into real woodcraft last year with the classic tent on piles. We have to rent a field since we are not allowed to go sleep in the woods or even construct platform between trees (Yet we can bring torches in and play at night). This is what we made last year and our scouts made almost the same (The vertical poles we're already there from the last camp)

We have a week to build our stilts before the camp begin, and we're using lashing to fix poles together. This year we'd like to make them two stories tall (if possible) with the tent on top. The terrain is flat with a part that goes 10m down on 20m-30m

Here's what we'll need:
>A bridge only fixed in the ground on our side of the river (4m will be enough)
>A watch tower
>The two stories structure to put our tent on top (we have some plans but nothing groundbreaking)
>A bridge to link these two
>Idea for our scouts to build their stilts

best kind of /out/ imo

used to go sailing every summer when I was a kid, then puberty hit and I just stayed home playing vidya and by the time I started to enjoy it again my father had died and we sold the boat

used to have a Swede 38. fast for a boat her age and beautiful lines. hard to handle solo tho.

in the future I want to get back into this. don't have the money or time yet tho. used to dream about crossing the atlantic solo. don't anymore.

>in the future I want to get back into this
Don't wait for the future yacht, just buy or rent a windsurfer or a laser or even a fucking Optimist, anything to get yourself back under canvas next summer. Even shitty sailing is heaps better than no sailing.
