I came to 4chan because of the fappening but I only stayed because of /out/. Thanks guys and a Merry Christmas to you all.

Merry Christmas, newfriend.
Merry Christmas!

i went from being 170lb on /tv/ and /b/ to 142.5lb on /out/ and /o/.
love u guys, love the /out/doors, love life <3
The thread last time seemed to be fairly popular so I figured if people were interested this could become a regular thing. Feel free to put in your favourite /out/ films below and discuss what you did and didn't like.
I asked about Into the Wild last time and I'm pretty glad I watched it. It wasnt entirely focused on the outdoors but it did it pretty well.
On my watchlist I have Jeremiah Johnson and Dersu Uzala, mentioned in the previous thread. Any thoughts on those two? I have heard Jeremiah Johnson is pretty good but havent really heard much else. Also feeling like watching a western. I havent seen any of the For A Fistful of Dollars films, they are classics but are they /out/?

I am also maintaining my recommendation of Stalker. The slow pacing may turn people off but I found it very introspective, and the scenery was nice too. Not a thrilling film but if you have the time it's a nice one to sit back and take in
>>649858
This is a list of films not necessarily about going /out/, but there are certain /out/ elements in all of them.
Dead Man, Moonrise Kingdom, Papillon, Valhalla Rising, Lord of the Flies, Antichrist, The King is Alive, The Blue Lagoon, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Fitzcarraldo, Stand by Me, Ashes of Time.

If you like the slow pace in Tarkovsky's films, then I'll recommend you Let Each One Go Where He May. When I watched it, it reminded me of Tarkovsky's dragging of scenes and how this affects our experience of time. The entire movie feels like a drag but if you can get into it, it's almost meditative (also it's very /out/).
What are some really great parkas? I'm looking for a really great, versatile winter coat/parka that I can wear for /out/ stuff, and to work, pretty much anywhere. Ideally it would last me several years.
5.11 Tactical's parkas seem cool to me but idk anyone who has used them. I hear Canada Goose is good but expensive. Any recommendations?
Were you looking for /fa/?

Canada Goose, you cheap motherfucker. You already said the best, you know it.
Cheap out and get The North Face Expedition, save yourself $500.
Also interested in this. I don't want to spend $800 on a parka. Would rather spend closer to $100 since I'm just going to beat it up outdoors. Lowest temps I'll see will be around 0 F (gets colder than that here, but I don't camp if it's that low)
Hello, newfriend here. GF and I always talking about becoming more /out/. It'll be a year or so because of babby imminent but in the meantime I'd like to read up on the subject.
What books does /out/ recommend? I saw pic related mentioned in another thread, any good?
Sweden during spring, summer, autumn so mild climate forest
>>649909
Haven't read that one, but his Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking was pretty good.
Also Tawrell'sCamping & Wilderness Survival and Army Survival Field Manuals.
The Barefoot Architect is good for /out/buildings.
And Thoreau, John Muir and Aldo Leopold are good for getting in da mood.

It'd be great fun having a set, I don't think I'd have any practical use for them, just for the entertainment.
Can go for a decent Gen 1 set up (Decent in terms of Gen 1 that is, Gen 1 is still fucking shit) and a really good illuminator. Otherwise save up and get maybe some used Gen 2s at least.
Who here lives in Georgia? What /out/ things are there to do in this state?
Not much now with this weather unless you like that.
But any other time there's shitloads of places to go hiking up north. Anywhere on/near the AT. I'm going to the Suches area tomorrow to do a few hikes that I did all the time in college
>>652460
White water rafting on the rivers is neat too
>>652469
Where'd you go to school?
Happy to announce I'll soon be spending the winter alone in the woods with just my backpack in the cascade range of Oregon. Going to have a great time living the easy life. Wake up, warm up, get food, warm up, get food, warm up get food, sleep, repeat.
Good luck, anon. Make sure you bring books pertaining to what plants are edible or you'll fuck yourself like that one kid. Also, a small wildlife book with good details will point you in the right direction for where to look when hunting.

I'm not sure where to post this, /out/ seemed the most appropriate board. I'm studying mental health nursing and I have to travel to the other end of the county for my university placement. This is about 3.5 hours either way by train, I don't drive. The placement is about 10 weeks long, of which I'll probably have to spend 4 days away from home.
I can't really afford £40+ per day staying in bed & breakfasts, does anyone know a cheaper option in the UK? How viable would camping be?

Try couch surfing or airbnb.

So made 4 exact copies of pic related to use as stocking stuffers... Am I missing anything? Kinda intentionally overfilling so the bros can build to suit.

Jetboil....it seems there are a lot of rival competitors coming out with this tech now- AlpKit make one for £35, Highlander also do one for a similar price. MSR Does the Windboiler, which is JetBoil money...
I've had a Jetboil since May, and it's been good. The only thing I've found is that it's either full throttle, or off, there is very little in between, hence buying this today. Despite having a 'better' more controllable vale, it feels a hell of lot cheaper, and less well made than my Flash. Do any other sc/out/s have REAL feedback on these things long term? I'm not looking for links to Youtube vids where some middle aged 'survivalist/backpacker' is shilling the fuck out of them...real input please
>>650752
Pretty much what the youtube ppl will say, will pretty much be said here too. What they say is really input, cause a lot of them will test the crap out of them before giving said input. So stop being an autistic faggot. This thread has been done plenty of times, go look at the archives.
>>650754
Fuck off.
90% of the 'reviews' on youtube is on stuff that has been out of the packing less than an hour, 7% used a handfull of times an there is maybe 3% of non-shill, genuine content
Don't forget to pick your fedora up on the way out...
I have had 4 of them. The first three broke and I returned them to rei. I love them for convenience and utility but the quality is poor and is really going downhill.
The oldest one i had was the best i thing it was the flash, it broke when I dropped it. the second one was supposedly ultralight but the plastic broke right away and the membrane disintegrated. Third one the plastic cup broke right away and the metal fittings didnt join right.
I would love to know if any competitors have a good alternative.
Btw im a middle aged backpacker so fuck you you little pipsqueak

My wife and I took a vacation to Myrtle Beach and stayed at Apache Pier campground a while ago. We were set up in a small camper/trailer that was minutes from the beach. I liked it so much, and the idea of a small community that was still semi-/out/, that I started looking into it for retirement. I'm 31, so it'll be a while, but I'm looking for ideas for places that are similar. I found that lots in the campground we stayed at go for about $15K+, then I would have to buy the actual camper/trailer home. But I loved being close to the beach and I thought that it would be great for a retiree. This is a link for the lot prices

And this is a link to give you an idea of the types of homes on the property

Do any of you know of similar areas that offer this kind of lifestyle? I don't want to be stuck in the city when I'm old as shit, but I also don't want to be too far away from the necessities of an old fuck who has death knocking on their door. Pic related, it's a lot like the place we stayed in.
>trailer park type area
Have fun paying a few hundred I fees each month in fees
This is how they make their money
My plan is to build a small cabin on cheap land, then build bigger as I get money
That or aproach someone I know about purchasing a trailer on his property and staying there, possibly replacing the trailer with a camper

Good camping spots in Denver?
>>650006
I'm sure there's a few, but the hobos have most likely claimed them all.
How do I avoid being eaten by a shark while spearfishing?
If I stay close to the shore there's only small fries.
If I go out into the ocean I become the prey.
It's illegal to spear fish in just about every river around here. And those that do allow it have murky waters. I live in Sydney, btw. So if anyone knows any good spots, do tell.
>no sharks in rivers
Bullsharks are well over 3m at maturity and travels up rivers to spawn. Maybe you should reconsider your hobby if you scared of sharks. They can smell your fear and if you flinch or show any weakness they will attack.
>>649872
>They can smell your fear
I'm not surprised, I just shit myself
