What is your favorite piece of gear you own, /out/?

Mine is my space saver mug, often i'll forego a mess kit and just bring this, fits a can of chili, 20oz of water, 2 packs of ramen, etc. and it fits on the bottom of a nalgene bottle.

I have a pot and bowl that snug in on each other and have a cover that strings them up. I can fit a mini stove inside. /cosy/

My favourite piece of kit when I'm actually out is usually the stuff I wouldn't care to mention, but water tight compression sacks. Keeps everything tidy and dry (for as long as I can manage anyway).

Can we get a tipping thread going?
I never know how much to tip.
I went flyfishing with a guide this fall and at the end of three days I just gave they guy a 50. I had paid the fees to the flyshop in advance and they really did not say anything about tips.
I got the feeling the guide was a bit disappointed.

This week I dropped of two snowboards and some skis to get tuned up. I pick them up tomorrow and have no idea if I am even expected to tip at all.

TLDR; tipping thread.

How much of batoning is a meme, /out/?
164 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
>>664358
For that guy in the picture? A huge meme.

He's clearly in his back yard. He's batoning a piece of wood big enough to burn by itself once a fire is established. The piece he has chosen to baton could even be hardened since it looks like it's already been in a fire.

That fucking nigger even has a well used batoning baton.

I bet if you gave him shit for it he'd just be all like "Yeah well, I did it to test my gear. I want things like this to happen to me in my back yard, not out in the wilderness!"

Batoning is with a knife is something you do in an emergency or at most very VERY fucking occasionally for lulz. It shouldn't be a primary method.
>>

An extreme meme.

Never in my life have I know or heard of a native or daily knife user that has ever batoned in his life.

I have never batoned in my life. It is not a necessity, even in an emergency, I dont know how one would need to baton for firewood.

I like how the backyard youtube survivalists baton just as a test of toughness that will make manufacturers come out with solid products, but I also miss knives that are thin and can actually cut well.

Arguably the worst part about batoning is that it conveys the idea that a knife with a hidden tang or a rat tail is automatically shit, when in fact it's not the case.

I'm wandering the highlands in late February but making my own path.

So far I just own a 22lr Cz 455 thumbhole.
Got it mostly for plinking and some small game hunting down the line.

Now I'm looking to invest in a beretta shotgun in 12GA and a Tikka T3 in .308.

I had 59 orders varying in amounts of patches per order but averaging something like 2 per order.

Patches are used for backpacks, caps and clothes anon's want to put them on. Some anon's collects them just for the sake of making a patch quilt to hang up somewhere in the house.

I have even seen some patches on gun straps ha ha!

The making and design of patches are submitted by Anons and I usually put a demo up in 3 day's to show them. If there is anything they don't like I make fixes and put it on the store.

It's a fun hobby I don't think it's got much to do with mental illness as you think. It's more board culture than anything else if you ask me.

Been wanting a "frame pack" found this one at Cal Ranch store, $75 USD. Very sturdy, can't wait to rig it out. I've got a 65 L dry bag to use for a main compartment.

Got the three piece snow shovel for $17 USD. Say this a year or two ago and went back for it, by my second trip, sold out! This time I could choose between red, org or blu. Got the red. I will strap it to the outside frame.

And a nice pair of Smartwool Hikers.

Getting ready to summit a 12,600' in mid Jan so the shovel might be nice for camp site prep.

It just got 12" fresh powder this weekend. Who knows by Jan?

Snowshoes also on the list, but may rent.

OC pics pls, I get tiered of posres using stock internet photos.

I picked up the same shovel, pretty light.

Any advice on updating this old frame I have, the original hip belt and straps were trash.

I assume you're W of the rockies? We're about to get that same system here in a couple hours.
>>
>>645973
> W of Rocks

Assuming is appropriate.

Dave C has a video on A.L.I.C.E. frame mods worth wacthing, I fuger frame doesn't matter. This one is longer than A.L.I.C.E. with a far better hip belt. I may look into better sholder straps after some mileage.

Drilling holes for eyebolts or installing cleats for lash points.

Adding various Maxpedition/Blackhawk type modular bags and pouches for custom carry.

I'm thinking pool noodle or foam pipe insulation to pad the frame for strapping on a rifle or such.

My main focus is adaptability of carrying firewood to milk crates to giant drybag, strapping on a shovel, axe, snowshoes and rifle to Stanley Packer tote or cooler.

Tags are still one it, but you see my direction.

With better sholder straps, it could go up to 75#s + and still be comfy for 25 miles.
>>
>>645981
One last thhing, people are replacing shit A.L.I.C.E. straps and belts with MOLLE straps and belts ("Hellcat" mod I think), you might look to milsurp stores or ebay for those or google img mod. for ideas.

good idea kevin let him rest a huge post of chili on burning wood so people can gather around to watch its spill when then wood crumbles. i wouldnt even suggest stones unless you were 99% confident in how leveled and founded the stones were. OP surely you can google a rig for your pot, and bonus point if you can fit the whole rig into the pot itself

I was pretty hype for it but having seen it I honestly don't know if I liked it.
I understand not having the screen time for the southward journey, you have to make some concessions converting to a screenplay, but Iñárritu could have played out much more of the survival drama if he hadn't blown all his screen time on artsy shots of rivers and trees and dream sequences. In the screenplay they went with, Glass gets mauled by a bear and is more or less ambulatory within what feels like a few days, there's no sense of time or hardship with no doubt and it's kind of boring.
It's just fails so completely on the assumption the audience will immediately lose interest if you ever draw a scene or concept out long enough to say anything meaningful.
>so many elements of the book carelessly mashed to one another
>indians needing a hamfisted justification to kill white men
>that super awkward snowflake eating scene
>that no suspense in the horse chase / cliff scene because you already know what's going to happen, also it was literally the length you see in the trailer
>that stupid tauntaun smells worse on the inside scene
>that hollywood brawl and ending
>based "in part" on the novel by michael punke
I wish I could just enjoy it for the numerous beautiful shots and scenery but I just found it baffling that you could have so many things directors would give their nuts for and end up with this. It wasn't terrible, just sort of bland and nonsensical. Am I wrong?
>>
>>661685
i agree with pretty much everything u said. it was beautifully realised but i wanted more of the survival part of the story - it left me feeling underwhelmed. i even watched it a second time to check i wasnt being overly critical.
i guess the book just doesnt translate well into a movie.
>>
Punke did his survivalist research, that's for sure. Every single step of every single thing Glass did to make fires and traps, etc. etc. on his long trek back to civilization after getting mauled by a bear is in excruciating detail in the blandest prose possible.

If any book could benefit from visual shortcuts and a condensing of action & time, it's this one. Should have just stuck with the movie.

Total snorefest.

I've been seeing a lot of innawoods guides.

What is the true essential innawoods gear? I mean all the things you'd need to survive in the wilderness for a year?

I mean something amazing like that 150 dollar camper someone made

I'm talking water proof, weather resistant, tools you'll need, skills you'll need to learn
