for me its wildboys. These guys went straight into the wilderness, engaged the most dangerous animals, pet wild jaguars, got attacked by lionesses, got tattoos from tribes, purposely got bit and stung by everything that kills people.
Tho they act like idiots and did stupidly dangerous stuff, but they got endless stories and experiences; just one of their eps has more shit than most people do in their lives. i wouldnt do most it, but they came out alright and i got mad respect.

whats your fav /out/ show?

Les Stroud is the only one I can really tolerate as far as survival stuff goes. That "Dual Survival" show had me watching for a season when it first came out, but I really didn't follow it after that.

I mostly just watch cartoons and SportsCenter.

I won't name it otherwise this will look like shilling. The gist is that it uses a flexible solar panel (included) to power a small fan and TEG which chills the incoming air, then the condensation drips down into the bottle and you have water to drink.

It is indeed filtered to keep out dust, bugs, etc. but not chemical contaminants, so you don't want to use it in the city.

They claim under ideal conditions it will produce 27 ounces of water per hour. Ideal conditions being 86-104 degrees F, 80-90% humidity.

What sort of performance is realistic under more moderate conditions? Could this be worth the weight or is it more meme gear like the biolite?

The most popular version seems to be meant to be mounted on a bicycle. The convection that will be produced thanks to the speed of the bicycle is probably going to help a lot.

It's not trivial to calculate exactly how efficient it will be under different conditions, but obviously it is going to be more efficient the higher the temperature and the higher the humidity. If we for the moment assume that the peltier device is extremely cold we get a higher limit in that the volume of water is proportionate to the absolute humidity. Now, obviously 27 ounces per hour is under the best conditions they tested it in, so probably 40 degrees centigrade (104F) and 90% relative humidity. The ambient absolute humidity is then around 50g/kg. Now your moderate conditions might be 20C (~70F) with 70% humidity. The ambient absolute humidity at this point is around 10g/kg. So with our approximation, it would under these conditions produce around 5 ounces per hour.

Note that this is a best-case approximation. In all likelihood when it's colder, the condensation is going to be less efficient and the panel will produce less juice for the peltier device. At lower temperatures it's going to be virtually useless.

So Ray sets up this ridgeline with a siberian hitch.

https://youtu.be/YG_-N4NiSlo

So on this side you've got the knot against the tree and slack out into the line.
What's going on on the other tree? You do the same siberian hitch but pull away from that tree to make it taut? Or do you do another knot there?

If you pull the siberian hitch away from the tree to make it taut: is there some further knot to keep the hitch on that point in the ridgeline? Otherwise it'll sag to shit under the weight of the tarp, right?
>>

The only knots I find myself using are

>slipknot
>square knot
>larks head
>stopper knot
I would like to know more but I can't think of a situation where I would need a different knot then the ones above. I would be happy for any information on knots and uses that I haven't considered.

Been looking for a good strategy to make a campfire in the snow but havent found anything useful yet, weather around here ranges between -30*c to 0*c and we have about a meter snow, finding dry wood proves difficult.
Im located in northern Norway so majority of trees around me are spruce and pine.
Its easy to find stuff to use as tinder, but as soon as i need to feed the flame with something bigger it's usually too wet to keep the fire alive with, where do i have to look for useable stuff?
Bringing dry wood from home is not an option.

Also, general campfire tread

You'l have to baton off the outer wood to get to the dry inner wood. It's a fuckton of work and serious pain in the ass, but once you get a hot enough fire you can just throw the wet stuff on and it'll dry then burn.

would tinder + portable wood stove work?

Do bubbles ruin a compasses accuracy? I've heard of people throwing out their compasses when they have bubbles and I remember my father saying not to trust a compass with a bubble.
31 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Your father is a dumb retard then. Most compasses don't even have spirit levels, and unless you're only looking at your compass in weekly intervals while travelling thousands of miles, that lack of accuracy isn't going to be noticeable.

Even if you absolutely did need to use one, it doesn't take much effort to get the compass completely horizontal. Use your shoestring, put it in water, or whatever.

Easy there Napoleon. First off he never said anything about being American, second off he had a legitimate question.

No need to eurochimp out. When you act like this, you come across the same as a jealous teenager who's envious of their more successful younger brother. A teenager than many years ago was relavent, but now realize they're just a small, irrelevant person, with no real purpose in the world. Your younger brother is successful, and one of the most powerful men in the world. You get mad at him for being so influential, so strong, so rich. You just realize no matter what you do, even if you brought 10 of your friends, he'd always kick your ass in a fight. So instead of being a man and standing up to him, you just bitch about him on the internet.

Relax.

Welcome, and i guess the best way to start out is go to your local provincial parks and just hike. You will learn what you need as you go. Lots of good information on here, take from it what suits you and disregard what doesnt. I dont know any good books, no reason to adopt one persons philosophy but im sure it wouldnt hurt to learn skills from books. Also, post about your own experiences and what you have found to work. REI or your canadian equivalent, MEC is a good place to at least inquire about gear and they offer free classes in navigation or many other activities

Hey boys,

So I ran the numbers in an excel spreadsheet and the calculations came back.

Nine compasses is the optimal amount of compasses to venture with. With 9 compasses you have a 98.99997 percent chance to have a 100% accurate compass reading.
19 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>672350
How would you know which one is the most accurate?
>>
>>672401
Good question, I guess.

So a compass can only be right 1/360th of the time, right? A human fits into a total of ten of the compass 'weights' or 'compass divisions.' That means a compass is really only right 1/10th of the time, since we can only go ten directions on the x-axis (boys imagine if we could camp on the z axis)

Anyway at home you look north, but
Since its relative, whatever you think is north and you measure a reading on your compasses. Once you have it, your initial North, for all 9 you simply turn to the next Compass Division. Once again, check to see if you have the correct division on your compasses. Then fine tune using the Turing-Table method. As long as you have 9 compasses, you will never get lost as you will always have two compasses pointing the correct direction.

Taking ten is a bit overkill as it goes from a 98.99997 chance of a 100% accurate reading to a 99.33334 chance which is negligible considering the extra weight taken on by the 10th compass.
>>
>>672450
>since we can only go ten directions on the x-axis
How do you figure?
>north is relative
No it's not
Also a compass reads magnetic north which can change due to the earths magnetism. That's why you have to adjust your readings depending on where you are in the world, sometimes as much as 30 degrees.

>do I just go out in the middle of a state park and set up a tent?
Not at all! There is a very serious procedure one must take in order to not get in trouble. They have park rangers, drones, and thermal heat vision cameras on every tree, looking for campers that don't have their license. You'll need to sign up at the DC (Department of Camping) for your written test. Study guides are available online. Then you make an appointment for an instructor to take inna woods to test you overnight as you set up a tent and all. If you make one wrong move you have to take the written test again, which sucks because you have to pay this $75 fee each time. My best advice for you is to study, study, study and stick to the book when it comes to your over night test. Don't make the same mistakes I did, camping without a license could get someone seriously hurt or worse. Don't put your friends and loved ones in the way for a little bit of weekend fun.

P.S. Some regions have learners "permits" you can buy, but they are only good for 48 hours and you must have a licensed camper with you at all times. Camping without a permit/license (CWL) will land your ass in jail. Don't do it, they will find you. They do not forgive, they do not forget.

follow up thread to the one questioning heavy lines for bass
i do want to get in to bass fishing, and im wondering if a combo ive got sitting around will work well for it
>line is 15 pound moni
>reel is abu garcia ambassadeur ambsx-5600
>rod is shimano FX C-70MB2

i got it for christmas (my family pooled together and got me one cool thing instead of 3 trinkets)
i live in NE ohio near akron, and the water im fishing most is mogadore reservoir, west branch, lake milton, the cuyahoga, and walborne reservoir (probably spelled things wrong and many of you may not have heard of them so here is the gist)
>range of water conditions from crazy murkey to nearly cristal clear
>gravel bottoms, sand bottoms, horrible muddy shit that i lost a boot in bottoms, and big rocks
>wide range of depths, some less than 15 feet, one dropping to 80 feet in the center
>plenty of brush piles, weeds, trees, rocks, etc

my three questions are: does this combo sound acceptable as a general rod (i have some spinning rods spooled 6, 8, and 10 pound test for finesse)
and what would be some good lures to get on a budget (50 bucks worth) that are pretty hard to fuck up using
and what if anything should i change about my set up
>picture unrelated, late summer channnel cat i got on liver
66 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
Sure it'll do the job, but I'm more interested in the spinning rods that you have lying around. You don't need to use a baitcaster for bass, and the setup your family got you seems like it would be better for bait versus lure fishing for bass. If you could tell me the spinning rods and reels you have, maybe I can suggest some soft plastics for you.

ive also got an 8'6'' rod with the same reel on it that i use for steelhead and crappie mostly, with 6 pound test on it, a light quantum affinity rod with a seina 1000fb and 8 pound braid that i like to work small lures with, a 7 foot ugly stik with a reel wos name escapes me, but its big (over 200 yd capacity of 20 lb, from back when i went through a phase of being paranoid of having my line totally stripped) an 8 foot medium heavy rod with 20 pound test on it that i mostly use for pike, i forget the rest of the specs other than 20 pound test line, and lastly a daiwa beefstik 10 foot with a daiwa opus 5000 bri that i use for catfishing
