Hey /out/,

I'm going to be going on a hike with some friends tomorrow. We just found out that it's supposed to be a fucking downpour. I don't have any good rain gear, won't have any time to run out and buy some, and am too poorfag for it anyway.

So, how do I rig up my own raingear?

Here's the most waterproof articles of clothing I have:
- Cagoule/ fold away Windbreaker
- M65 fishtail parka
-Condor Phantom Soft Shell

Also, rain gear thread

They're trying to jew the National Park Service because they're buttblasted about losing their lucrative contract.

Really I wouldn't be upset if the NPS just booted all those asshole concessionaires out of our parks.

I've always had a dream of one day trekking the Himalayas in Nepal. Before I make that journey I want to get a taste of mountain backpacking at home in the US. Are there places I can get a comparable experience to a Himalayan trek? Things like multiple biomes in a 4-5 day span, high mountain lakes, deep valleys and such. I live in Arizona, so I am no stranger to mountains although the ones here aren't exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe in the Rockies or the Pacific northwest? What do you say /out/?

The cascades in Washington and the smokey mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina are both temperate rainforests and would be like what you woüld experience in the Himalaya.
>>
>>669523
I'd second The Northern Cascades or Olympic National Park.
>>

Thirded. I've been to the Cascades and the Himalaya. If you can get a free plane ticket to Nepal though, via churning credit card rewards, it's really quite an affordable vacation and an incredible experience. I felt like I was in a dream.

Has anyone here made a terrarium or bottled garden before? I currently have two ferns inside pic related. It's been nearly two weeks and the ferns appear to be fine. Some of the terrariums I saw had different layers in the soil, with charcoal and gravel for filtering. Unfortunately, the bottle got a bit shaken up and the layers lost their distinctness. Oh well, it appears to be going fine anyway.

If you have a terrarium of your own or cool pictures of terrariums, please feel free to share it!

Its river glass. Broken pieces of glass that gets polished by the water over time till its smooth. I have a jar of it from my childhood.

I'm leaning towards quartz because of the amount of conchoidal fracturing. A sure way to test is by actually scratching it on glass. Quartz has a hardness of 7, glass is 5.5. I took an intro to geology class.

Which is the better filter, /out/?

Lifestraw claims to filter out 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoa. It claims it can be used to filter up to 1000 L of water, and has been field tested for years in pretty harsh environments like Africa and other shitholes.

The Sawyer mini claims to filter 99.99999% of all bacteria and 99.9999% of all protozoa. I did not see a total lifetime listed for the mini, so I assume it is good for at least as many liters as the Lifestraw. The Sawyer claims the pore size in its filters is 0.1 microns, which I'm assuming is similar, if not smaller than the pore size of the filter in the Lifestraw (because the Sawyer claims to filter more protozoa).

So which do you trust more, /out/? Which is the superior filter?

I use the Sawyer mini. I want to say it was some huge lifetime. I have every expectation that I'll break it or lose it before it dies. The Sawyer is just wide enough to wrap in duct tape, and who doesn't need extra duct tape? The Lifestraw I think does a buy one gift one deal, where they send one to Africa.
>>
sawyer claims 100,000 gallons. that's what i have. like the screw on. just carry a couple extra bags.
>>
I have the sawyer mini. I don't like it but it does what it's supposed to. It even comes with a straw btw.

What I don't like about it is how the bag only fits maybe 500 mL and it takes some time to press it through. Way too annoying for me I just use these disinfection tabs now.

/out/, i have a question about wood.

I moved into this rental and my main source of heat is my wood stove. PG&E fell 3 trees in my front yard that were very dead and 1 fell in my back yard. i easily have 4 or more cords of dead wood.

How does /out/ handle their chopped wood? what do you do with the saw dust from cutting it? these trees were very dead, the pine needles at the top were brown, but its still burning like its wet. how long should it take to be really aged?

its dark now but if this thread is still here tomorrow i will provide pics.

not bait, just burning what i have. they did cut down some oak but it was alive still and is super wet.

why whats wrong with burning pine?
>>
find a place in your back yard away from your house and stack the whole pieces of wood on pallets covered in plywood. stack them neatly and cover with a tarp for a year to let the wood season. if you need it that bad, it can be seasoned over the summer. splitting dry wood is a lot easier than wet wood. as for sawdust, just use a leaf blower and rake to clean up the tree mess

If you use mink oil remember how qt minks are. Also, when I was looking for a picture I saw some mink in a cage. Probably in a Chinese farm.
He appeared to be blind in both eyes but half his face looked rotten, like a zombie.

That's what you're supporting when you buy it.

I have a few shirts from rei, a thing or two from Columbia, and then a pairs of offbrand synthetic pants and shirts. Does anybody have any recommendations for a jacket or coat for 30-40' F temperatures?
>>
>>649399
I think you should go with lots of layers. I was at a lecture with a guy from Sirius(see link) and he described his clothing as follows:

>Fine mesh underwear(to avoid
>Woolen underwear(in very cold weather, two layers)
>Thick winter pants
>Fleece jacket
>Wind breaker
>Thick cotton jacket
>Down coat
>Boots(3 sizes too big)
>Two pair of thick woolen socks
>Thin gloves
>Thick mitts

>Fleece jacket

4 coats for 30-40F weather. Yeah....no.

I actually get a lot of my /out/ clothing from Old Navy. Their active wear line of clothing is pretty good and its super cheap. I got some synthetic long sleeve shirts for $10 each.
