I want to have a really reliable fashionable jacket with a large knife and all the essential, traveling around the world doing odd jobs and meeting new people. I want to be able to live on my own in the wilderness, as well as urban situations. I have 12000 USD in student loans I should be getting soon. I plan to emulate bad ass assassin with a "seen it all and I'm cool as fuck" attitude. Help me spend my money, so I can fufill this impulsive fantasy. pic unrelated

What kind of apps and websites are you using when traveling? Any tips for a modern traveler to save time and money while on the road.
>>669250
there is an abundance of porn sites to choose from
but i often just use /gif/
GasBuddy for cheap fuel
CalTopo (site, not app) with snotel overlays for snow depths and terrain/slope overlays
Avalanche Forecast for ... well, avalanche forecasts
DOT websites bookmarked for the states I'm travelling through for road closures
I also keep copies of parts fiches, owners/service manuals, wiring diagrams, etc for my vehicles on my phone. Not ideal, but in a pinch it's nice to have that information available.
USB-OTG adapter's kinda handy too.
Just did a little /out/ today and damn I was cold. About the only thing that was warm on me was my feet since I have a dcent pair of boots and wool socks. Rest of me? Ice cold. My face in particular was frozen. I got gloves but they are so bulky if I wanted to do anything even taking out my water bottle i'd have to take em off and it would take a long time for them to warm back up.
It was like 20F out today, that's with the sun up, I couldn't imagine doing this at night.
Just like I would out when hot. With just warmer gear. Also more ways of starting fire, some more food for the extra calories burned.
Get wool/polypropylene long john silvers and an undershirt
Get a scarf or a buff and a hat
Wear an outer layer that blocks the wind and something to insulate underneath
Quit being a pansy
>>669223
Good gear. Really no way around it... and you get what you pay for.
Keep the wind/water out, and you'll stay a lot warmer. Dress in layers, and bring extra gear in case something does get wet (socks/gloves especially).
Balaclava for your face.
>>669232
>more ways of starting fire
This... your firesteel won't cut it in the winter when shit's wet. I like road flares, they'll get things done. >Pic extremely related.

>outer layer that blocks the wind and something to insulate underneath
Yup.
20°F is rather warm.
How do you deal with frozen snot?
not with a mustache i can tell ya that much

Flea combs from petsmart. After defrosting most of it with my hand.
Followed by a quick wipe with a clothe.
A buff so my face stays warm
I'm thinking of getting a scuba license and before that I wanted to toy around homemade equipment.
I saw some youtube videos about using coke bottles full of compressed air to breathe underwater, but then I found pic related. It's an 8l-liter hand-pumped bugspray.
I don't know the science behind "the bends" but I know they exist. Should I worry about them if I don't plan on going underwater more than 15 mins, and never more than 10 meters?
Any scuba experts here?
>>667543
In case it's not clear, I plan on pressurizing this with pure air and going in, breathing when needed just by activating the release switch.
Would this work?
It cost just 25 usd, but I'd like to know if my idea is even remotely plausible to work. I have absolutely no other use for this thing.
Is it worth your life to find out?
There's a pretty good description here of how to build a simple, safe, compressor supplied diving helmet. There's some DUDE WEED LMAO but ignore that.
http://psychedelicfrontier.com/underwater-tripping-5-hours-bottom-lake/
This style of diving has a proven history and is much harder to fuck up than trying to DIY a scuba cylinder, especially without a regulator.

Been meaning to order some sam splints for use in my pack. They're not the most ideal form of splint, but the flexibility makes for easy storage and versatility in molding into shape for various body parts.
is only first aid needed comrade
Stock up on this shit, the only thing I ever use.
-Sprain fingers or toes? Sorted.
-Bleeding? Sorted. Waterproof.
-Broken leg? Use it do secure the splint. Sorted.
-Broken equipment? Sorted.

What do you do when the night's are long and the days are short? Went hiking myself in December
>sunset at 4pm
>sunrise 8am
>stayed in bothy
>bored out of my tits
Actually just thought fuck it at 6am and hiked in the dark with my headtorch until sunrise (was just a forest path).
How do you keep yourself occupied in downtime?
>inb4 fap
Having trouble with the same thing here in Texas, it's a warm winter but it doesn't get cold cold here til on into February and March. Went for an afternoon hike yesterday at around 4 next thing I know sun is going down over a hill and it's getting cool and dark. Was pretty disappointed

Booze.
I bring some whiskey and take swigs every now and again. I like having a constant buzz.

There's a reason people don't go camping in the winter you retarded coon
ITT: Good Camping food
Bonus Points for homemade
Homemade venison jerky.
/r/ing that info graphic where the guy makes those protein bars
This is all you need or even want
What do you guys think about buying surplus army rations to take as camping food?
I'm going on a 10 day hike, and I'll need all my own food from the start. I've toyed with bags of oats, rice, and looked at camping food by companies like Mountain House, but it all seems either very expensive for little calories or very heavy and bulky.
So i looked up how they do it in the military, and discovered that you can quite easily buy military rations online. You can get an entire days calories for a reasonable price and a small enough size. Such as these.
http://evaq8.co.uk/Ration-Packs.html
The only reason im asking is because ive never seen or heard of anyone using this method before so it makes me skeptical.
>>669906
You are going on a ten day hike and have never prepared food /out/ before?
So I've never gone out, but want to. It seems to me, and I may be wrong, but it seems that it would be best to take raw high energy density stuff that you can make into other things. Stuff like high protein flour, powdered milk, anything dehydrated and with a good packing density. Am I missing something?
>>669906
>The only reason im asking is because ive never seen or heard of anyone using this method before so it makes me skeptical.
Because it will be heavy as fuck son. Thats the appeal of freeze dried meals suck as Mountain House. They weigh very little. When I do a long distance hike I try to keep pack weight as low as I comfortably can. It makes for a much more enjoyable hike
I'm looking into buying a pair of nightvision binoculars for use on a boat. A friend once demonstrated how useful it can be during night-time approach to shore and similar. In any case, I've browsed a bit and seen many options, however I'm looking for quality and longetivity, as in the binocs should last a few years and have decent night-vision illumination capabilities.
Seeing how this is the outdoors board, it seems the best place to find people who had to purchase a pair sometime, and would know which brands are good and which to avoid.
Do you have any reccomendations? Price range is up to 1500$, preferably less, as I don't need military grade binocs, just decent magnification and night-vision.
>>669271
Someone is going to look at the women camp.
We have GPS now, you can drive your boat in the fog.
Binoculars won't help you to drive a boat.
If you really drive boats at night in unmapped area, you are looking for spots. The battery of your boat can support a lot of them.
>>669291
Thanks for the non-advice.
Also what the hell is a woman camp? If you mean a nude camp, there's plenty around, and no, that is not my intention.
GPS is inaccurate to 50m, and seeing is better.
>>669346
Buy a good one, GPS is accurate to a meter, and the unbridled GPSs receivers of the army are even more accurate.
If you want to see at night, lamps are what you need. If you really want to drive a boat all lamps off, any NV google are fine, even the "cheap" ones, but it does not worth a lamp.
If you have a kayak, frontal are good.
Alright /b/ros. Usually a lurker, but need some advice. I currently live in Colorado, USA, and I'm considering moving to bumfuck nowhere Siberia so I can live off the grid (kinda). I know nothing about Russia or living off the grid, but really would like to get the fuck outta dodge. I would like to boat there, as you can't take a lot of the shit I will be taking on a plane. So I was going to just stick to the coast on the way up there.
>pros and cons of Russia
>shit I'll definitely need (price is not the biggest issue, but not looking to spend a ridiculous amount.)
Well you'll need a permanent resident visa, and those aren't really easy for Americans to get. Especially if you don't have any professional skills and don't intend to have a job.
ask napoleon about the cons
So you have no skills of knowledge of any kind, and want to move to what is possibly the most remote aRea of the planet and expect somehow to survive?
