DAE feel like that?
I have been (more or less) regularly browsing /out/ for 1-2 years now, occasionally posting in some gear thread (mostly double-use stuff like backpacks, watches), and I find it super fascinating and exciting to follow the threads.
But tbqhfam i've never even sleep outside in my life.
I just find it super comfy to read from my comfortable armchair in my air-conditioned house about people doing survival, prepping, etc.
Full disclosure, I *have* travelled a lot (way more than avg), lots of countries, lots of backpacking.
Just not into nature.
Am I missing out?
You sound like a female. You don't have to kill yourself but for the love of Allah never post again.

yes.
Hey /out/ I live in Texas and love going outdoors but due to living in Houston I rarely have the opportunity to "get away" as most of the camping spots I go to are full of people. Does anyone know of any reclusive spots where there isn't a lot of people and I could just hike and camp in peace? I really get tired of hearing some dbags blaring the last fetty WAP mix tape or dirt bikes. Plz halp.
>>665111
Thanks for that pic of Revy tho.
You have amazing dispersed beach camping anon.
Many of us would kill for that.
Set up camp onna beach. Trench fire, catch fish and make fish tacos.
You could be living the dream
Grettings /out/, I am a 4chaner but a rare visitor to your thread
But I figure what the hell we all are all family and you might as well help me, so I come to you with this:
I own a leather(buffalo) flying jacket for more than 8 years and I am in love with it
Problem is it has started cracking
How do I take care of my second skin?
Wax it? Smear fat on it?
I know how to take care of my leather shoes, is it the same procedure?
Pic somewhat related
Boop
Noone?
/out/ is not bothered with leathers?
>>664603
/out/ is a slow board, especially during US nighttime.
For jackets, it's best to use leather milk/creme since regular grease is a bit rough (esp. on thin leathers.) Waxes and polishes are strictly prohibited.
Proper care of a leather jacket is done in the summer so it hasn't seen rain for sometime. One to two months of complete dryness is recommended - any moisture absorbed by the leather will be trapped inside by the grease and can turbofuck your garment.
If it's started cracking already and you never properly took care of it, it's certainly too late.
Some of you faggots are alright so don't go outside tomorrow, or ever, if you live in Idaho. Environmentalists have released weaponized mountain lions with two sets of teeth. They are trained to attack geo poopers, cairn kickers, hammockers and leave no trace fedoras.
http://www.idahostatejournal.com/members/mountain-lion-with-bizarre-deformity-found-in-southeast-idaho/article_bf8320d4-3c5b-5546-ad7d-91c1c702eb47.html
>implying it can trace me when I leave no trace
>>661503
but why would they attack the hammockers? we're like the elves of the camping world. we are one, at peace, with the all the creatures of nature
>>661507
Hammockers girdle trees. That's not cool, plus all the hydrocarbons used in making hammocks cause global warming
Post pictures your trail cams took
>>665203
lots of them do, except most of them are infrared now
Hello,
I had to hike in tropical climate for a long time using the only hiking boots I have. They stink like rotting socks now, naturally. I was wondering maybe you guys know some tricks how to get rid of the smell without buying some special deodorant? Would be nice not to stink like death when I couchsurf. I tried freezing the boots for a few days, it's -20C where I live, but it didn't really help. Any ideas? Pic unrelated.
I heard that vinegar is supposed to remove smells.
Get the cheapo stuff, soak them boots and then wash them with soapy water. The vinegar should eliminate the rotten smell and the soap should get rid of the vinegar smell. Just check if the material can handle acids
Collidial silver will help kill the bacteria.
after you get rid of the smell, you could prevent it from returning by removing the insoles and replace them with some fancy anti-bacterial charcoal soles
First post here. This is my main /out/doors knife (not my picture). The handle comes with no sealant, finish or anything of the sort. Will treating it with just polyurethane protect it? Thanks!
Yeah its just personal preference. You can also use boiled linseed oil. Or vegetable oil (blade and wood) or fix'n wax (blade and wood). Or you can really use any furniture / wood sealant you want.
>>665649
anon we have knife general, you should have asked there, but since you created the thread already you can you boiled linseed oil, it will work good.
What's it like hiking in a country with dangerous wild life?
Are you constantly on the look out for bears or wolves?
>>662678
Unless you hike where there are brown bears, there are no dangerous wild life in North America.
The couple of times I've been in brown bear territory were a little tense, but nowhere near the fear I have had of falling, or a dangerous water crossing
>>662681
But what about mountain lions? and black bears?
>>662681
>Unless you hike where there are brown bears, there are no dangerous wild life in North America.
Jesus fuck you're retarded.
>>662678
Make noise while you hike and camp, talk to yourself, sing along with music, have a small speaker you play your music through. Doesn't need to be deafening, just enough to let something know you're there. That's enough to keep most bears and such away unless you force them into a position where they have to be near you. IE you fucking walk up to one. Keep food away from your camp in bear bags or barrels if there's bears of mountain lions and such nearby, don't give them a reason to invade your camp. If able, get a good campfire going, most animals will stay away from smoke but don't cook at your campsite, cook where your food is. Have a separate warmth fire near your sleeping area. Venomous snakes are mostly common sense, watch where you're walking, try not to make paths through thick brush, don't walk around barefoot. Same with ticks and mosquitoes, wear your bug spray and proper clothing. And most importantly have a means to defend yourself. I will not go into proper woods without some kind of loaded firearm. If you're against that, bear spray at a minimum.
Hey /out/, looking for movies/documentaries to watch to help me out while I'm cooped up with school.
Here are some I would recommend:
Mile...Mile and a half
Alone in the Wilderness
180º South
Touching the Void
Happy People
Ride the Divide
Castaway
What would you recommend?
>>666720

ok /out/ im sick of this shit
i'm getting bullied alot by bears everytime i go innawoods
one of them just groped me and laughed at me and called me a lardass last time. everyone laughed at me even squirrels.
how do i stop bears from bullying me?
>>663080
Lose some weight fatty
>>663080
You are just gonna have to let the forest animals have their ways with you. Bring plenty of lube.
It sounds like your problem is furries, not bears.
Lucky, the cure for both is gunfire.
Why do these people exist to ruin our sport?
>>640251
I can't understand the vitriol some feel toward cyclists.
It just baffles me that people call themselves normal but wish death upon others for no good reason. This obviously extends beyond hatred of cyclists
>>640294
Some kind of ethnic tribalism, maybe? I'm serious. Have you ever seen someone rant about bicyclists saying that bicyclists should have to pay registration?
Everyone, besides a few exceptions, (or people in the city) drives. Every bicyclist is already paying for some kind of vehicle registration.
>>640294
Non-motorized vehicle in the roadway
just bought one of these
Leatherman Expanse e33L

did i fuck up?
>>666147
its a knife, does it cut stuff?
do you think it was worth your money?
if yes to both, then you made a good purchase, all you'll get here is opinion and a shitload of pics of other knives you'll wish you had.
>>666147
Looks like a Crater with metal on the handle. I like my Crater.
>did i fuck up?
You didn't get the serrated one did you?
>>666147
Go use it and find out.
Hey /out/ I need your advice. I'm not a pro photographer at all but I would like to get into photography and night photography, specifically taking pics of stars. But I have no clue where to start, can you guys recommend me a beginner setup that won't break the bank? That would be great
>>661139
there is literally a photography board and a technology board
there's also a thing called google
>>661140
Ok sorry bud, just thought I could get some advice on /out/ cause I know some of you do photography, and I like this board the most
>>661139
Hopefully you don't live in a huge city with lots of light pollution.
Check this site: http://www.lightpollutionmap.info
>Saw some awesome ballcaps and shirts at Basspro
>love em
>wish I could find their website
>all I can find is their fb page that links you to the basspro website
Can anyone show me where to get more of this amazing shit?
bump?
>>666151
It's a Bass Pro brand
>>666610
is that so? Hmmph. Thought is was supper new and it's own thing. Oh well. Thanks though!
So, I want to start fishing this year. But, I need to buy all the gear and maybe even a new rod.
So, anyone have suggestions on what I should get for a started kit? I'm talking hooks, lures, reading material, etc.
If you want to send me amazon links or anything like that, it would be great. Oh, I live in Canada if that matters. Southern Ontario.
Does anyone here use waders? I was thinking it would be cool to have a pair. I am mainly doing river/lake fishing. Not fly or deep water,
thanks!
>>664404
Ice fishing?
>>664404
There are a million choices. Honesltly, I would grab a decent rod+reel combo first. If you spend ~$75 (USD, so probably like $3000 CAD) you won't get a piece of trash.
And then I would say just get a cheap starter kit from Berkley or whoever. A plastic tackle box that will come with a few assorted hooks, bobbers, and maybe a couple lures. Then start fishing at your local lakes, see what is biting and ask what other people are fishing with, and you can start adding lures. Stocking a tackle box can get expensive if you're a dumbass like me.
>>664495
you may be a dumbass, but youre my kind of dumbass.
ask around for what people catch, whats in your rivers & lakes. start there. you may only need a treble hook & some worms, you may need some flashy flies. depends on what you can catch & what theyre used to. but the previous advice is pretty solid.
also, no on the waders until youve done it for a while & know youll keep doing it. start from the bottom.
