Civil engineer here.

You need to get a degree. There might be some 2 year ones, but I am not sure.

Then you need to take your FS (fundementals of surveying) exam. I had to take and FE (fundamentals of engineering) it was super easy but I am not sure how it compares to the FS.

Then you work for a few years and take your PS exam (professional surveyor exam). Again, I took the PE. The PS was in the same room. The PE is known to be somewhat brutal, but the PS guys (and girl) looked fucking miserable.

Not trying to talk you out of it. Your best bet for experience would be to intern during the summer (assuming you are a full time student during the rest of the year). If you are in the USA, try working for a local DOT or a small survey crew. This work will not be what you want for your end goal.

After you are done with school, find a consulting firm that works in the bush. There are tons of them. Go to a state that is known for their vast areas of wilderness and mountainous/forest land.

I have had stories from people where they hike 4 hours, do a survey loop in knee deep snow, and hike back to the van.

My work is not that rewarding
>>

>what kind of education is needed?
None, or you can join the labor union.
>is there other training/certification necessary after college?
No. Certificates are available for those pursuing their license. Some places don't require one to submit a map.
>how soon after college did you find a job?
Immediately. I got a job with the company I did my college internship with.

>>664564
I read somewhere that civil engineering was rewarding, but I think they include us with you guys. I took a basic structural engineering class for my architectural associates. Seemed like it was just a bunch of looking numbers up in charts. Surveyors never get the credit they deserve, and while I'm on the topic, why the do we have to use your software? Shouldn't you be using ours? We're the first guys out there doing any real work, and the last ones to leave.
>>
>>665726
>I read somewhere that civil engineering was rewarding

I did not mean to imply that I do not like my job, or that it is not rewarding. I just don't get to /out/ much during the day. And when I do, it generally is not hiking/backpacking out

>why the do we have to use your software
All of the surveyors I work with use Civil3d. I personally hate civil3d. It is a very buggy program that crashes all the time (at least the versions from a few years ago).

What program do yo want to use.

Hey /out/,

I didn't see a general for this so I'll start my own thread. Let me know if I should post elsewhere.

I have never backpacked in my life and my hiking experience maxes out at short day hikes. I am going to buy a pair of hiking boots soon and I have a hiking stick, but 0 other equipment.

I have been thinking about renting some backpacking gear and then going on an overnight camping trip (two days of hiking total - maybe one night out, one night back, an easy trail because I'm extremely out of shape) with my girlfriend this summer likely somewhere around Pennsylvania.

I'd rent a backpack/tent/cooking gear from some site like this.

http://shop.mountainsidegearrental.com/Complete-Backpacking-kit-for-two-people-7-day-rental-period-BP2P-7.htm

I realize I'm paying a lot of money for such a short use, but I don't want to buy $500 or more worth of gear and only use it once if I hate it or something.

Chances I get mauled by a bear in the woods, catch some terrible parasite because my water filter is shit, or die?

Anybody have advice for an absolute beginner?

Is this a good way to get into backpacking?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
eh, for $250 with careful craiglist/internet deals/consignment store shopping you could put together that whole kit except for the tent by summer, and then it's yours to keep. then if you're worried about bugs or rain just rent the tent for $30.

if at all possible make friends with a real person who's backpacked at least a few times before, and have them take you on an overnighter. it'll be way less miserable, but no less memorable.
>>
>>666894

I probably only have 1 friend who has ever even been on a day hike, I don't think I know anybody who has been backpacking. Such is the life of a city slicker.

Tips to avoid being miserable? How bad could it be besides bugbites or getting wet?
>>
>>666886
>Is this a good way to get into backpacking?
Sounds all right if you're tolerant of mild discomfort. Unless it's winter or otherwise horrible weather it's hard to completely fuck up an overnight. Even the cooking gear isn't strictly necessary, I've done impulsive 2 day trips on a jar of peanut butter, a loaf of bread and a bag of apples. Though bacon and coffee in the morning is quite nice.

Car camping is another way to ease into it, you can bring more comforts or even sleep in the car if it monsoons. Might be a bit less risky if bringing the GF if she isn't too outdoorsy.

>Chances I get mauled by a bear in the woods, catch some terrible parasite because my water filter is shit, or die?
Are any of those a known issue where you're going? You have to follow certain rules about how you store food in bear country, but if you do, the chances are close to zero.

>Anybody have advice for an absolute beginner?
Always break in new boots before you wear them on a long hike.

Theoretically if someone was to go out and hunt dolphins, where would the most effective shot placement be?

would .50 beowulf be enough to go through water and still be lethal, or should they just use a spear?
44 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>665942
For dolphin shooting you'll want to use a subsonic round as high speed rounds tend to break up on impact with the water or at least are seriously deflected, gas powered harpoon is the best dolpin hunting weapon I'd say but you know shooting dolphins would be more satisfying I feel, please post pictures of the result. As an offshore sailor I fucking hate dolphins.
>>
>>665942
Bow/spear/harpoon for hunting dolphins would probably be more effective than bullets. Unless you're shooting perpendicular to the water's surface your rounds are likely to disintegrate upon impact. Mybusters tested this. No comment on the subsonic rounds and their abilities to break the surface of the water at an angle. Also ricochets are entirely probably and likely shooting water at an angle.

I believe in the next year or so Americas probably going to get hit and I plan on making a run for a safe country after world war 3. How should I plan to stay alive in the environment because I may have to walk to South America or some shit

Power armor is your best bet. Traveling mostly at night helps you sneak past the super-mutants (I'd avoid attacking them directly until you level up a few times and manage to find some decent firepower). Keep to high ground, not only does it give you a tactical advantage and a better view, it also helps you avoid the mirelurks. Those bastards are worse than radscorpions. Taking the "animal friends" perk early will keep you safe from Yao Guai.

Good luck and watch out for deathclaws!

Sup guys, how is it going? So I love /out/doors but most of the time I only hike/camp and do some MTB and even though I'm reasonably fit I would like to improve my arms and back size and strength.
What activities should I start looking for? My first thought was climbing but despite rock climber usually having a nice strong upper they don't seem to get bigger in size.

Tl;dr /out/doors activities to build up strength and muscle in the arms and back

I kayak around a small lake in the National Forest near my house. It isn't as ideal as a float trip on a river, but if I push myself it turns into a great back and shoulder workout.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone here has completed hikes that are from 280 - 330 km (173 - 205 mi) in terrain graded "medium difficulty", ie. no need to mountain climb but expect some steep hills. How many days did you use?
Reason I'm asking is because I'm planning to do either Westweg in Germany or ViaGottardo in Switzerland in the summer/autumn and I'd love some input regarding timing. I am also unfamiliar in the area except from business trips to Basel and Stuttgart, so locals' input are especially welcome.

I've walked Oslo - Trondheim ((Norway) 500 km - 310 mi) over 12 days, but this was with a group of several people and slower than I'd usually walk so not really representative I think.

Thank you in advance.

If you're new to through hikes, 15 miles a day is a decent cruising pace. I'd factor in 13 to play it safe, and add one more day to that.

Have fun! I'm jealous you have the time to do this. Best training you can do is to get your feet used to being used a lot more than normal.
>>
>>668060
Thanks for your reply. :) 15 miles seem like a decent goal, it's the distance from my home to my workplace, so an easy distance to check out.

Negative.

.44 mag or die.
>>

9mm doesn't have a lot of stopping power for things like bears and moose. I would recommend 357 magnum - 45 ACP, maybe even a shotgun.

A fucking BB gun and a can of bear spray would be adequate protection because none of those are realistic threats if you know anything at all about camping and zoology.

Hey /out/

So I do a bit of hiking and hunting fairly regularly, but only really day trips and a little bit of overnight camping here and there.

I really want to start doing more hiking/trekking as in longer/multiple day trips. Looking to start out with overnighters and then go longer as I get more experienced, but I don't have much of an idea where to start, especially as far as gear goes, so if I could get some help with the basics that would be awesome. Just looking for a list of what gear I need, and maybe some decent brands.

I'm a pretty minimalist type of dude, but I don't want to try going ultralight as a beginner and make a huge mistake.

Currently for day trips I take the very basics in either a shoulder bag or a little backpack: water (depending on how long I'm going, usually 1.5-2L), food (generally just a packet of nuts and a packet of jerky), and a first aid kid. On my person I have a little first aid kit that fits in a pocket and has a little multitool in it, as well as my phone and wallet.
If I'm going hunting usually I'll also have: rifle, about 20rnds, plastic bags, alcohol wipes, knife, and bigger ziplock bags (all for field dressing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, I've been meaning to get out for more hiking and start doing longer trips for ages, but Since I've been doing more hiking than hunting I'm loving it.
