Civil engineer here.

You need to get a degree. There might be some 2 year ones, but I am not sure.

Then you need to take your FS (fundementals of surveying) exam. I had to take and FE (fundamentals of engineering) it was super easy but I am not sure how it compares to the FS.

Then you work for a few years and take your PS exam (professional surveyor exam). Again, I took the PE. The PS was in the same room. The PE is known to be somewhat brutal, but the PS guys (and girl) looked fucking miserable.

Not trying to talk you out of it. Your best bet for experience would be to intern during the summer (assuming you are a full time student during the rest of the year). If you are in the USA, try working for a local DOT or a small survey crew. This work will not be what you want for your end goal.

After you are done with school, find a consulting firm that works in the bush. There are tons of them. Go to a state that is known for their vast areas of wilderness and mountainous/forest land.

I have had stories from people where they hike 4 hours, do a survey loop in knee deep snow, and hike back to the van.

I read somewhere that civil engineering was rewarding, but I think they include us with you guys. I took a basic structural engineering class for my architectural associates. Seemed like it was just a bunch of looking numbers up in charts. Surveyors never get the credit they deserve, and while I'm on the topic, why the do we have to use your software? Shouldn't you be using ours? We're the first guys out there doing any real work, and the last ones to leave.

I did not mean to imply that I do not like my job, or that it is not rewarding. I just don't get to /out/ much during the day. And when I do, it generally is not hiking/backpacking out

All of the surveyors I work with use Civil3d. I personally hate civil3d. It is a very buggy program that crashes all the time (at least the versions from a few years ago).

eh, for $250 with careful craiglist/internet deals/consignment store shopping you could put together that whole kit except for the tent by summer, and then it's yours to keep. then if you're worried about bugs or rain just rent the tent for $30.

if at all possible make friends with a real person who's backpacked at least a few times before, and have them take you on an overnighter. it'll be way less miserable, but no less memorable.

I probably only have 1 friend who has ever even been on a day hike, I don't think I know anybody who has been backpacking. Such is the life of a city slicker.

Sounds all right if you're tolerant of mild discomfort. Unless it's winter or otherwise horrible weather it's hard to completely fuck up an overnight. Even the cooking gear isn't strictly necessary, I've done impulsive 2 day trips on a jar of peanut butter, a loaf of bread and a bag of apples. Though bacon and coffee in the morning is quite nice.

Car camping is another way to ease into it, you can bring more comforts or even sleep in the car if it monsoons. Might be a bit less risky if bringing the GF if she isn't too outdoorsy.

Are any of those a known issue where you're going? You have to follow certain rules about how you store food in bear country, but if you do, the chances are close to zero.

For dolphin shooting you'll want to use a subsonic round as high speed rounds tend to break up on impact with the water or at least are seriously deflected, gas powered harpoon is the best dolpin hunting weapon I'd say but you know shooting dolphins would be more satisfying I feel, please post pictures of the result. Bow/spear/harpoon for hunting dolphins would probably be more effective than bullets. Unless you're shooting perpendicular to the water's surface your rounds are likely to disintegrate upon impact. Mybusters tested this. No comment on the subsonic rounds and their abilities to break the surface of the water at an angle. Also ricochets are entirely probably and likely shooting water at an angle.

Power armor is your best bet. Traveling mostly at night helps you sneak past the super-mutants (I'd avoid attacking them directly until you level up a few times and manage to find some decent firepower). Keep to high ground, not only does it give you a tactical advantage and a better view, it also helps you avoid the mirelurks. Those bastards are worse than radscorpions. Taking the "animal friends" perk early will keep you safe from Yao Guai.

I kayak around a small lake in the National Forest near my house. It isn't as ideal as a float trip on a river, but if I push myself it turns into a great back and shoulder workout.

If you're new to through hikes, 15 miles a day is a decent cruising pace. I'd factor in 13 to play it safe, and add one more day to that.
