Greetings, /out/. I come to you in search of wisdom on sharp things. I generally dislike going outdoors but I love working with wood, and I've had the idea to make my own marking knife out of a drill bit.

Here's what I do know. A marking knife is simply a very small knife, held like a pen, meant to scribe lines in wood as close to a straight edge as possible. So it's single beveled, and is shaped so that a line can be scribed onto wood with either your left or right hand. And I have an assortment of spade bits. I know that the steel is some sort of high-carbon, hardened tool steel which is made to drill through wood and steel with no issue and should work well for this application in theory.

What I'm unsure of, is whether or not on typical spade bits, part A (the new bevel) is as hard as part B (the part I want to grind away). Because if the bits are manufactured so that only the cutting edges are hard, I would need to heat treat the steel, and I'm not equipped to do that. And also, I don't know what is the best way to grind this metal without affecting hardness in any way. Would it be sufficient to grind away Part B on a bench grinder while dunking in water, or do I have to do something more drastic?

Love,
/diy/

If it's made for cutting steel, it's probably made of some common HSS alloy like M2. Just keep it cool while you're grinding it and you'll be fine. If you burn the edge, just grind it off and reprofile.

Maybe give it a final sharpening using progressively finer grades of sandpaper/emery cloth if you're feeling artsy.
>>
>>678237
Normally you normalize a piece of steel before grinding and harden it again afterwards. If you use a low alloyed carbon steel, you can do that with just a magnet and some really hot coals in your backyard.
If you got a HSS (Cobalt alloyed) steel, forget about it.

If you grind it without normalizing, there is a good chance that you at least punctually warm the metal over annealing temp, and that be bade for your future edge. water cooled grinding stone would be the tool of choice.
>>
>>678337
Small nitpick: M2 and M7 HSS has no cobalt, and that's what most of your everyday drill bits will be made from. "Cobalt" HSS is considered a (small) step up from normal molybdenum-based alloys because it has more heat resistance.

Are there any places in the south that get four distinct seasons? Because it's 70 something where I am.

Texas has as many seasons as you want, but the season has nothing to do with what month it is.

What do you consider "the south".
VA fag here. We get 4 seasons.

Richmond was the capital of the confederacy.
Also Western NC gets 4 seasons.

Greetings from /k/. I go innawoods 2-3 times a year, always in summer. I want to broaden my horizons and knowledge, so I have some questions for you guys.

>how do you keep your weight down? Seems no matter how I pack I am always 45lbs+.
>If I am entirely naked with no supplies in the woods, how can I start a fire?
>Is fishing/hunting/trapping/foraging good enough to skip packing a few meals?
>Can I replace a tent with a bivvy or tarp and be as warm/comfy?
>How do you keep dry in the winter?

I have more, but letting me know this for now would help me greatly.

Pic related, one of the places where I like to camp.

>>Can I replace a tent with a bivvy or tarp and be as warm/comfy?

A good small tent is maybe the same weight as a tarp, so no savings there. My bulkiest thing is a mattress, maybe raking up grass or something to put down a soft underlayer would be best. You still need blankets or a sleeping bag.

Some places I go fishing works, but hunting you have to worry about limited seasons. (Maybe you make do on squirrels and rabbits with a .22) Good luck for foraging with the two weeks some berries are around.

>How do you keep dry in the winter?
GOOD TENT, GOOD PLACEMENT
Think hard about where rain will go if it comes overnight, snow should be OK.

In your pic, find the highest ground, then get all the grass you can pile up under the tent.
>>
>>677665
I don't winter camp, but I like mountain camping, where it can get below 32F, even 20F at night.

Or it can stay warm and rain. Once I woke up still dry and comfy on my mat, but the lower side of my tent had a puddle soaking my bag and clothes.

> Oh well, I'm trying to be a mountain-man, not a metrosexual....
>I can wear the same clothes next day :(
>>
>>677665
>45lbs+
For a one week trip, it should stay under 25lbs.
I understand you carry guns and ammo. This is not going to be light. If you have tools that you don't use or if you can get less tools to do the things you need to be done, there is weight to save.

>If I am entirely naked with no supplies in the woods, how can I start a fire?
Don't. You have a limited time before you pass out, use it to find a road or something.
If you have your gears, you must at least take two bics. You are free to get more things.

>Is fishing/hunting/trapping/foraging good enough to skip packing a few meals?
Of course. Alternatively, you can carry no meat at all, just corn or rice or things like that so you won't be hungry if you fail and success is more rewarding.

>Is fishing/hunting/trapping/foraging good enough to skip packing any meals?
Nope.

>Can I replace a tent with a bivvy or tarp and be as warm/comfy?
Nope. Tarps protect you from rain only, eventually reduce the wind. Biwies have a condensation problem and you can't sit in it.

>How do you keep dry in the winter?
You clothes must be easy to adapt to the variations of temperature, wind, sun and your physical activities. Open/close your coat all the time. Get a small scarf and remove it if needed. Get a coat whose sleeves can be wide open or tightly closed.

I am about to close on an off-the-grid cabin in the interior of Alaska.

I have lived in 'town' here for a few years, after immigrating from the midwest. I really want to live out in the bush and this will give me the chance to do that. After saving up money from working fishing boats and cutting timber and oil sites, I can buy this thing and keep enough savings to live off of for a while.

Shit will be expensive. Heat is wood and I am going to try to cook on that, but all gasoline will have to be flown in and I will have to fly in and out for essentials.

Hope I don't die....

Good luck anon. This sounds more interesting than the typical thread like this on here because 99% of the people who post these threads are just dreaming empty dreams and being laughably unrealistic. Good for you for actually thinking this through and working up to it.

Have you looked into an area that is capable of being easily reached by car or boat? It might be more expensive to purchase but cheaper over the long run.

hey /out/doorsmen partiffcularly those in to bass fishing

i live in north east ohio and have always wondered about why bass fishermen are rocking 15, 20, ive eaven met a guy who uses 30 pound mono for bass
why? in my area they only get to about 5 pounds, and ive never heard of one over 8, so why are so many bass fishermen using line that breaks at 3-6 times the weight of the fish theyre catching?
i mean when im going after smallies im using 4 pound test and ive yet to lose one, and ive never gone after bass with heavier than 10 pound test
i mean my heaviest catfish rod has 20 pound line on it, and i've used it to bring in a 5 foot shark in nc once, as well as a 4 foot wide stingray the next night while in nc
>picture un related, its a little catfish i got while teaching my niece and nephew haw to fish for blue gill

im asking because im looking to get more in to bass fishing, i usually do carp, catfish, pike/muskie, trout/steelhead, and panfishing
>>
>>676747
i mean doesnt it take some of the fun out of fishing if all youre trying to do is get a bite, and you can just rip them out of anything no problem?
i mean sometimes i feel like 15 pound test is overkill for the pike around me because it feels like i can just about rip their lips off and swing them out of the water
>>
>>676747
Don't know about 30lbs mono, might be a little bit much but my three set ups are:
>50lbs braid - for heavy cover like punching grass mats and getting out of lay downs
>30lbs braid - medium cover like lily pads and docks
>10lbs fluorocarbon - for cranking / finesse

Hey /out

Im a complete outdoor newfag. so much, that ive never even been camping, ever.

im looking for help in either directing me or just tips on longterm outdoor survival. When i say longterm, i mean by that possibly year or more long. Is it even possible given how the world has changed? im also looking for it to be without any human contact during that time, or minimal, and abscence of modernity.
The area that i have fantasized about would be somewhere along the lines of washington, those sorts of forests. But then again, im basing this solely on the looks of those places. What area would be best to survive in?

How do i even start, and am i retarded for even imagining such a dream?

Why don't you buy a cheap tent and spend a few weekends out in nature and see if you even like it? If you've never been out camping you might take the conveniences of modern life for granted.

Pro-tip: Bring toilet paper.
>>
>>676676
i have that planned soon. But for now im wondering if pursuing it makes any sense.

Ive never been camping but i have spent a few months in a hermitage in india. But i lived off of food donations and didnt have to do much aside keeping the fire alive. I definetly liked it, but it was still to much human contact for me.

>>676669
Why do we get this thread pretty much every day.

Like the other guy says, stop aiming so big, just go out camping for a bit if you're serious.

Okay guys, I live in Northern MN and I'm looking to go for some sort of winter Camping excursion. I've never really tried it before and it seems somewhat straight forward, however since I never have I want some wisdom before I try anything stupid.

Anything I should know? I have all the gear to be expected from someone who camps plenty in the warm season, what else should I bring?

Anything that commonly gets overlooked when preparing. I'm not going crazy far into the woods or anything but I wanna spend a few days away.

TLDR- my gf left and I want to dissapear for a bit. General winter Camping advice needed for Northern MN.

basically more layers in a waterproof sack, and you might want a beefier tent designed for snow load cuz i hear it snows pretty good out there
IDK what your sleeping bag is like but check the temperature rating
>>
Get yourself some comfy long underwear, cotton or flannel is fine for cheap otherwise get some nice high tech moisture wicking superfabric. I wear some nike cold weather running tights under everything and sleep in them, it's nice. It will be dark more than summer so bring a good light unless you want to go to bed at 6pm. As cold as it will be you might want to be in bed after dark anyway, so maybe bring a book. Don't kill yourself op you're finally free to go winter camping!

Kinda feel like this is a lost cause. Everything that tastes good either needs a lot of stuff to be carried around with you or takes a lot of energy (regarding stoves with gas cartridges).
I prefer either making a real fire to make pasta or ready made food like pic related: tastes good, leightweight, fast to make.

This is out of your price range (80 dollars and up), but the Marmot Randonnee glove is the best cold weather glove I've ever used that still has good dexterity. I've tried on tons.

But if you live somewhere with warmer winters you don't need something that good.

I live in Michigan so the winter's can get pretty hectic here. I've had gloves like those for winter before, but they had literally froze on me! The rubber grips and outer layer had frozen over the day of me using them.
Had to hang them over the fire just to thaw at the end of the night.
Have you had any experiences like that with the Marmot's?
