If it's made for cutting steel, it's probably made of some common HSS alloy like M2. Just keep it cool while you're grinding it and you'll be fine. If you burn the edge, just grind it off and reprofile.

Maybe give it a final sharpening using progressively finer grades of sandpaper/emery cloth if you're feeling artsy.

Normally you normalize a piece of steel before grinding and harden it again afterwards. If you use a low alloyed carbon steel, you can do that with just a magnet and some really hot coals in your backyard.
If you got a HSS (Cobalt alloyed) steel, forget about it.

If you grind it without normalizing, there is a good chance that you at least punctually warm the metal over annealing temp, and that be bade for your future edge. water cooled grinding stone would be the tool of choice.

Small nitpick: M2 and M7 HSS has no cobalt, and that's what most of your everyday drill bits will be made from. "Cobalt" HSS is considered a (small) step up from normal molybdenum-based alloys because it has more heat resistance.

A good small tent is maybe the same weight as a tarp, so no savings there. My bulkiest thing is a mattress, maybe raking up grass or something to put down a soft underlayer would be best. You still need blankets or a sleeping bag.

Some places I go fishing works, but hunting you have to worry about limited seasons. (Maybe you make do on squirrels and rabbits with a .22) Good luck for foraging with the two weeks some berries are around.

I don't winter camp, but I like mountain camping, where it can get below 32F, even 20F at night.

Or it can stay warm and rain. Once I woke up still dry and comfy on my mat, but the lower side of my tent had a puddle soaking my bag and clothes.

I understand you carry guns and ammo. This is not going to be light. If you have tools that you don't use or if you can get less tools to do the things you need to be done, there is weight to save.

Don't. You have a limited time before you pass out, use it to find a road or something.
If you have your gears, you must at least take two bics. You are free to get more things.

Nope. Tarps protect you from rain only, eventually reduce the wind. Biwies have a condensation problem and you can't sit in it.

You clothes must be easy to adapt to the variations of temperature, wind, sun and your physical activities. Open/close your coat all the time. Get a small scarf and remove it if needed. Get a coat whose sleeves can be wide open or tightly closed.

Good luck anon. This sounds more interesting than the typical thread like this on here because 99% of the people who post these threads are just dreaming empty dreams and being laughably unrealistic. Good for you for actually thinking this through and working up to it.

Have you looked into an area that is capable of being easily reached by car or boat? It might be more expensive to purchase but cheaper over the long run.

Ive never been camping but i have spent a few months in a hermitage in india. But i lived off of food donations and didnt have to do much aside keeping the fire alive. I definetly liked it, but it was still to much human contact for me.

IDK what your sleeping bag is like but check the temperature rating

Get yourself some comfy long underwear, cotton or flannel is fine for cheap otherwise get some nice high tech moisture wicking superfabric. I wear some nike cold weather running tights under everything and sleep in them, it's nice. It will be dark more than summer so bring a good light unless you want to go to bed at 6pm. As cold as it will be you might want to be in bed after dark anyway, so maybe bring a book. Don't kill yourself op you're finally free to go winter camping!

Kinda feel like this is a lost cause. Everything that tastes good either needs a lot of stuff to be carried around with you or takes a lot of energy (regarding stoves with gas cartridges).
I prefer either making a real fire to make pasta or ready made food like pic related: tastes good, leightweight, fast to make.

This is out of your price range (80 dollars and up), but the Marmot Randonnee glove is the best cold weather glove I've ever used that still has good dexterity. I've tried on tons.

But if you live somewhere with warmer winters you don't need something that good.

I live in Michigan so the winter's can get pretty hectic here. I've had gloves like those for winter before, but they had literally froze on me! The rubber grips and outer layer had frozen over the day of me using them.
Had to hang them over the fire just to thaw at the end of the night.
Have you had any experiences like that with the Marmot's?

Met a lot of guys that swear by them for rucking but I don't really like them. No real ankle support. Just tall running shoes.

They're really cheap right now, but I think they just came out with a new generation that's better quality.
