Novice. I have had this gerber for quite sometime, manufactured survival knife with flint and a sharpening tool attached to the sheath. It feels very sturdy and is a little heavy but other than that what do you think of it as a starter?
>>692627
>gerber
Gerber is trash, and serrations are more trash. Sorry.
>It is not bad per se, but for the money you could have a really good knife.
Saw this at home depot parking lot. I think he's doing it right. Think /DIY/ would like it?
>>696200
It's got a wood stove
>>696200
>think he's doing it right
Not really, that thing will blow apart if a truck passes him.
>>696291
But it hasn't yet.
What does /out/ take on a 24 hour snow camping trip? Me and my friend from Florida are camping out this weekend in Central Maine. We will be walking in about 3 miles and setting up camp. This is my first overnight in the snow so any gear lists or advise would be greatly appreciated! P.S. I need to shop for shelter/sleep gear at Walmart today, any suggestions? Thanks /out/.

By the way temps will be between 25-35 degrees F

good tent, not just some shitty one you happen to own
wool socks
good fire making tools for your skills, if you can make a fire with two sticks, two sticks is fine, if not, bring your own everything, tinder, flame, even wood so you dont have to [not] find it out in the woods
flashlights that are powerful and extra extra [extra] batteries
i always used to have either weed or alcohol or something to bring camping, some dxm to let the ghosts out
protection from ghosts
a big stick that you carve into a spear before nightfall
a small goat or other good bait animal
condoms [you will be having sex with your friend]
small snare traps about the right size for a 12 year old human
drone with infrared capabilities
up to 8 doses of animal tranquilizer [not for use on animals]
a good book
a can of beans for you to eat
water bottles
a chair to sit in
ropes and bindings
a candle
a knife
a mirror
can of beans for your friend to eat
extra car keys for when he takes yours
a good hat
sun lotion
warm pants
a can of beans for him to eat
some cough drops to help ease your throat after all the screaming
bleach [helps get the stains out]
there is more that you want to bring but these are the basics

There may not be snow there depending on exactly where. Super mild winter for the most part this year.
Hi /out/, this is my first time posting here.
To keep it short, I want to basically live out in the woods, in a little small cabin that will only have a small fridge/freezer, radio, antenna T.V., and a couple of lights, maybe an electric heater. I plan on building this cabin myself and pay for water and electricity with a check from the government.
Now this isn't me completely being self sufficient but its going to be pretty close.
I understand that in the winter i'm going to have to buy food from the store, however i want to mostly hunt, forage and farm the food I eat.
I would just like some pointers on some books i should read about foraging and surviving in the woods, because most of the stuff that came up on google was just stuff about how to farm organically. I'll need to know more than this, I need to know what kinds of fruit and vegetables are safe to eat (i understand this is region specific mostly) just things like that.
Does anyone know of a book that could tell me the basics of living on your own in the woods?
I've been thinking of supplies I'll need, like an axe,gun and skinning knife for starters. Any tips or suggestions on what all I should have with me when I do it would be nice.
Pic related, its one of the things i don't want to
happen to me.
Are you going MGTOW?
>>692122
No I'd like a wife or something like that but i'm certain most woman would not be able to live the kind of life i want to.
I'm doing it because, honestly, videos games have gotten boring, work sucks, all the new movies suck, fast food sucks....i just don't really enjoy modern society. I'm also a pretty introverted person to begin with, i can cope with not talking to people a lot.

Dont get married anon, just get a tugger now and again at the asian massage place.
Thats what I do.
If all of humanity disappeared off the face of the earth, where would you go? What would you do to keep busy? What's the first thing you'd loot?
>>675425
>if all of humanity disappeared off the face of the earth, where would you go
Nowhere on earth, apparently
i'd go to comcast hq and piss in all their coffee machines, water dispensers, etc, on the off chance they're coming back
then find food and water or whatever
I suppose I'd be very confused and wary of what happened. Likely making me bug out to the wilderness. I live in western massachusetts, I'd probably head west to the AT and take it to canada. Make some kind of permanent home
I can't go /out/ because of an injury.
Are there any good /out/ games to play?
What do you guys think of the long dark
Liked it, good atmosphere, still only explored about 2 regions in the game.
Mostly it makes me want to buy an SMLE, though
Pic of my comfy cabin in game
>>690593
Very comfy game. Wildlife is highly aggro on the highest difficulty but it's not horribly balanced
Not too much bushcrafty stuff yet. If you're looking to make hatchets and knifes out of rocks and sticks you're out of luck for now
But the game is gorgeous and I can't wait to see what the future holds for it
9/10 /out/ game
Firewatch is pretty and has an okay story if you're into walking simulators. The music is amazing
Best cheap backpacking meals?
Sick of paying $7 a meal for mountain house style meals.
I want meals that you can just add water to a bag. Easy to make. Easy to clean up.
What are the best cheap options. The Knorr pasta sides are good, but most seem to need butter and milk in cooking... can you cook them with just adding water in the bag?
pack your entire bag with snickers.
>>684674
Pack your entire bag with beef jerky
>>684674
sodium overload
Who here /hikealone/?
I get into this topic a lot with people, and I often get off-looks and disapproving statements on the danger and such. But there is something peaceful about taking to the trails for miles and days by yourself. What's your Favorite experience you've had hiking alone?
Where is pic from?
>>677320
I almost exclusively hike/backpack alone. Nature doesn't feel quite as sublime if I' not completely alone in it.
Sometimes I hike alone, sometimes I hike with friends. Depends on my mood and the hike.
If I hike alone I make it a point to tell someone where I'm going and when I expect to be back.
> carve a spoon anon
>>691589
Hook knife are the worst, I hope you dont catch mrsi and die anon.
>>691592
This. I don't mean to make you nervous, OP, but it's like a 90% chance it'll get infected and kill you. I'd chop off my whole hand if I were you. The infection is probably already spreading. Act fast!
>>691589
looks like you have a decent start, just need it a bit bigger
Tips to stay alive?
Camping in a few days in southern Ontario, supposed to be -12 C.
We have a 3 season tent, bags rated to -17 and one rated to -10. Have thick(ish) sleeping mats
Probably going to feel more like -17
Ty
If it gets real cold it will be tempting to cover your head inside your sleeping bag. Your breath will make water vapor inside bag and you will get damp.
>>687323
Yeah I heard about that, will do, thanks man
>>687320
Fellow Ontario resident here. Your equipment isn't really ideal, I'd bring some extra wool blankets and make sure to drink lots of hot liquids.
Post pics, vids, stories, etc.
What species have you seen lately?
>pic related
>>686447
buffleheads and ducks
Where are you located?
am in south florida, only now starting to pay more attention to different species and songs while out.
Any beginner recommendations for equipment or what have you?
>>686806
I'm also a beginner.
Started getting into birds after spending more and more time outdoors; My only equipment is a confortable foldable chair, guide to local birds, camera & some good binoculars.
Where does /out/ work? Did you apply for an outside summer job yet?
I work at a ski lodge for the winter, I haven't found a summer gig yet but I've started sending out applications.
At a university
>summer job
Summer's not for working
in gardens like that for the most part.
they apply to me, not visa versa.

Just gonna lift my leg and mark my spot over here.
Actually made it in and out of West Marine today with nada $ spent.

They don't sell fishing stuff, do they? What were you lookin at?
I'm thinking very seriously about leaving home with $400 and walking to Oregon from Connecticut. I have had no luck securing a job and want to leave home asap before I become a NEET cellar dweller. What would you do?
Do it right now.
connecticunt here, dress warm, last night hit -8f and down to -40 f with windchill supposedly, if you come to central ct you may just have yoursef an /out/ buddy
>I'm thinking very seriously about becoming homeless
I've decided to start getting serious about all this.
I'm starting to garden, I started to learn how to fire rifles, planning on renovating some old house of us, etc.
What are some of the essential guide you'll recommend?
* general
* military guides
* surgery, medicine
* bushcraft
My first advice would be:
Survive the economic collapse, by Piero San Giorgio
Synthetical, didactic, complete, explain the causes and their consequences and what you should do about all of this.
Is pic related a good starter for bushcraft?
Watch Ray Mears and Les Hiddens on youtube.
