As the largemouth bass in Florida slow down with the warmer water, I can at least look forward to seeing what the anons in the Frozen North are catching:
I'm definitely going to play with more jigs and Texas rigged soft baits this summer. If I can run them along the bottom in deeper water, maybe I will have better luck with bass when it is sunny and 87F.
How is the dorm room rod build coming along?
Yup, still cold up here.
>>701931
Fuck that
How do I get better at detecting bites with texas rigged plastic worms? I fish them by raising the rod tip to 11, letting it drop and reeling in the slack. They usually bite while its dropping but since the line is slack I usually don't know something bit it until its too late. I've accidentally gut hooked some bass.
Any tips?
I personally love my FN FAL
It is just so soft shooting and accurate, it is my favorite hunting rifle that I own.
What is your favorite gun for /out/door activities?
Do you prefer handguns to long guns?
>>679129
OP is a picture of the US Militaries trials with an early version of the FAL.
I don't go out much, but the compact 9mm. Rifles/ shotguns are a big burden.

SKS.
>no box mag to get lost or snag on branches
>I don't feel sad when I drop it.
>Cheap to buy.
>Fun to shoot.
>enough range for my particular biome f I ever have to kill something with it. (temperate rainforest)
I actually hunt with a remington 700 but like to carry an SKS for plinking on hikes. It just werks.
Post some great finds. I found a barely used sleeping bag the other day.
>>698742
I found some lovely filth in the bottom of one today, I rubbed it all over my face and buttocks
>>698742
went to a junkyard today got a few jacks for free, a strap or two, some shot rotors for a project, and i may be getting a motorcycle from there, everything today is free,, motorcycle will be under $100 i also may get a spare bumper for my truck etc
Yes I found several tin cans the other day and acquired a lovely crack rock.
How to survive a nuclear war? And how to re-establish basic technology and civilization after that?
>>693949
>How to survive a nuclear war?
I'd hunt hairless cats in a radiation suit. Then fight marauders under a bridge with some sweet dual machetes. Probably find my way to a town to get my portable electronics batteries recharged and get some water. I'd get out of there during a gunfight, some girl would follow me out of town as well. We'd visit a house that was owned by cannibals trying to eat us, but they'd fight with some marauders from the town that followed us and it would be a big battle and I'd get shot but survive. The girl would survive too. We'd find our way to the west coast and I'd die and she'd carry on my legacy. The great part would be that I was blind the whole time.
you dont

Unless you've got a bunker with an air scrubber and ten years worth of food, water and waste disposal, you're fucked. That old propaganda bullshit was just to give people false hope because the government didn't want people to quit their jobs and stop providing supplies for the troops. If we had a full-out nuclear war today, there would be about 2000 people in the US that would survive, half in private, multi-million dollar bunkers, half in government facilities which not a single person on this website, including any FBI, CIA or ATF agents will ever see the inside of. Most other countries would have even fewer survivors. You're better off not worrying about it, stress isn't good for your health anon.

This guy doesn't have nearly enough Mepps.
Just in time for another work week, I think I found a decent little fishing spot or two. The canals are nice since I don't need a boat to get to the deepest part. Also found a nice little weedy hole at one of my old lakes and there seems to be some bigger largemouth lurking around there. Either way, I'm happy because I have a few new spots to work as the largemouth are getting harder and harder to catch with the water warming up again.

I'm somewhat tempted to try scanning one of my lures at work, and attempt "pirating" them on the side.
>>699198
I tossed a little bit of line in a kettle pond on Friday before I went to RI Saltwater show.
Nothing happening yet or I wasn't getting out to a deep enough drop off.
I talked to a diver and he said they are definitely out there.
Hopefully I'll have battery figured out for yak by Tuesday and I can go out then with the garmin.
>>699217
You have a 3d printer there? Fucking A, go for it.
A neighbor a short distance away has a huge-ass ugly, UGLY tree on their property. It's the one thing really wrecking the skyline where I live, and this tree turns out to be the reason who 110$/month internet is going a third the speed it should. These neighbors have trashed their property, are genuinely unpleasant people to live near, and people in the area suspect them of being the fuckers that bash mailboxes once every other year. How do I kill this tree? The property has no dog, so going straight up to the tree is an option. They have the absolute worst yard I've seen to the point that for a long time until I actually saw someone coming out of the house when I drove by it, I had thought it was abandoned or sanctioned off, wouldn't surprise me if there's something illegal or shady going on in there. I dont want to necessarily cut the tree down, I just want to kill it. I hear drilling a hole, and filling with salt towards the trunk can work.
What do?
Even poisoning the tree will just result in a big ugly dead tree that will take decades to rot.
Fire is your best bet.
>select all images with trees
>>700100
It'll be a big ugly dead tree that I can offer to cut down for firewood for cheap if not free at that point. The tree has to go.
Seen a lot of things about cold steel tools, they seem like they're cheap and reliable but what does /out/ think?
I prefer warm steel desu senpai
the cold steel shovel is nice because its light weight, single piece construction and the slightly longer handle gives you a little more heft than the smaller fold up shovels.
If your looking for a good non folding hand shovel, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one for the price.
Glock shovel
/out/ I want to start hiking but don't know shit one about what to do.
I want to start small. Doctor said I need to be more active and I've always liked taking walks, so hiking seems like a logical extension. Healthwise I'm a little overweight but nothing that far out of normality, no major joint pain or anything.
So what do I wear and what do I bring?
>>695869
I'd say the best way to start is to pull up google maps on the are where you live in sattelite mode and find a decent patch of forest or grasslands or mountainous area (depends on your locality). If it is less than 4 miles to the spot go there on foot, if more, use other transportation. Take a few snacks with you, not too much, so you would fill up, but enough not to feel hungry. Also look up if the area has any nature wonders/monuments, if there are, visit them. If not, just hike on the present trails or go and bushwhack. Wear anything, that you don't mind screwing up. Later on you will figure out what would be better to wear, buy, while looking at various equipment. Just make shure, that the base of your shoe isn't super flat.
No need to go full gearfag and immediately buy lot of stuff, just follow those rules :
- Do not challenge yourself to much and go where it's easy and gear wont matter when you begin, then gradually adjust the difficulty (length, elevation, duration, snow, ice, rock, exposure...) as you get comfortable going out and as you gear up.
- Always tell someone where you go, and always be ready to turn back if you don't feel it.
This aside, I'd say, for short hike, like 2h, you can bring whatever you want, it wont really matter. For day hikes, you should take :
- 1L of water
- some snacks
- 1 extra layer of clothing
- wear running or hiking shoes
Then you can bring a map, compass, knife, food, poles, backpack, rainjacket, beanie, sunglasses, camera, goggles, hat, but you don't have to.
This is probably the second most important thing to bring when hiking. The most important is obviously water.
>download maps into smart phone
>save a ton of room in your bag
>use data to GPS your location unless you are deep innawoods
Why don't you simply move to where you most want to live and enjoy the life you dream of?
A valid question?
I actually prefer to live in urban areas and I come to /out/ to vicariously enjoy the scenery I don't have the patience to actually reach.
>>694932
I did.
Best decision of my life.
Thanks for the advice, OP.
Bear Issues!
So in Ontario were at a record high for number of bears, mostly because of people getting the bear hunt cancelled. My main issue is there becoming bold and there all over the place, defence is needed. How would you guys go about protecting your self from bears? I know there will be a lot of 'oh there big pussies and will run off with a little noise.....'. This isn't always true, there's been a number of attacks in Ontario and deaths all over North America. In my area were not allowed to shoot them but 30mins North you are its fucked.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America
>Bears are just baby bigfoots.
Bears aren't real.
>>694899
No bear bacon for Ottawa, fatty fatty sweet bear bacon.
>>694928
what?
>Fire Striker threat
Magenisum, Ferrocenium, Mag/Ferror Mix. What kind of fire steel (striker) can you recommend?
Did you ever ignite a fire with a fire striker only? Or are your /out/-skills too low?
If yes: Do you use fire steels on regular basis (Practice) or just in emergency situations?
Tell us about your experiences, personal thoughts while using a fire steel ?!
I use a misch metal rod opposed to a ferrocium as I prefer the burn characteristics of the additional elements (extra magnesium if I'm correct) as it prolongs the length of time the scrapped fragments burn for.
IMO it's bordering on meme tier now, everyone and their uncle has one and very few know how to use it properly.
I use it only for playing. In an emergency situation I'd use one of the half dozen lighters I have strewn through my gear (trouser pocket, jacket pocket, my cord bag, also in my fak)
Also I use a dedicated STRIKER to spark mine, fuck using my knife to do it (abuse abuse!)
they work well. are impervious to water but require more prep. they are by no means a "skill" friction fire is a skill. using a ferro rod is just a amtter of not being retarded, striking into a fluffy enough material.
and for god and all thats holy sake. dont use the blade of your knife
Easiest stuff to light with it is some pre-prepared charred cloth or charred dryer lint
What does /out/ think of pic related? I'm going hiking and know there are several lakes/ponds in the area.
Is this, alone, good enough? Assuming I won't be using water for cooking? If not, what's the next best thing?
>>693438
Well still use a purification tab
>>693438
It's pretty good, the Sawyer mini is better tho and about the same price.
Boiling is the best option, depending on the debris you might still want to run it through a cloth or something.
>>693438
Do you like laying face-first down an incline sucking water with several pounds of pressure behind it? Do you enjoy drinking water you spat into your canteen? If so, lifestraw is the perfect fit for you!
Otherwise, pic related is pretty nice. Scoop a couple liters into the dirty bag, hang it on a branch, pop the cap off the Sawyer mini, and attach to your camelbak (where the mouthpiece goes) it sometimes requires a little squeeze to get going, but then you've got two liters of filtered water in a couple minutes, with little effort. Also, you can reuse the dirty bag as an additional water container, upping your carry capacity by an extra two liters if you need to.
In case you're wondering, the orange stuff is duck tape for repairs. Just happens to fit perfectly.
Going to go hunting for the first time next week, any advice?
don't die
>>689415
Make gun safety into muscle memory, go with someone experienced who knows the area, make sure you have both permission to be where you're hunting and permission to hunt there. Basic common sense stuff, really.
>>689420
good luck!
What temperature could you withstand for an overnight with just an emergency blanket, sheltered from the wind and rain and near a fire? I mean, without getting frostbite or caressing hypothermia.
>>688778
>Near a fire
Any temp
>>688802
This
You don't need a Mylar blanket if you have a fire.
Without a fire......
>caressing hypothermia
Shhh....be still...be still.

I'm excited for you Yankees up there. Another couple weeks and hopefully your lakes won't be frozen over. Meanwhile it will just start getting hot down here. Maybe it's the perfect time for me to start fishing saltwater so I can enjoy that cool ocean breeze.
As always, let's discuss our grand plans of fishing adventures as soon as we have the time and money.
Currently getting raped by a blizzard in Indiana at the moment... Strangely enough they're saying it'll be 50 degrees by Sunday though. I'm hopeful that this is the last of winter. Maybe I'll be able to head down to the southern part of the state in a week or two and start using all the new hardware. Kinda went overboard with the new reels. I have a thing for stradics I guess.
>>696555
>>696540
Yeah I'm getting raped in Ohio here shortly
But about your "expensive fast" comment pepsifag
Yeah if I wanted to spend 135 on a rod before shipping I'd just buy pre-fab and cut the end of the handle off to make it weigh right.
I found a 10 foot medium fast blank that is rated from 1-4 ounces for 80 but then I'm gonna need 40 dollars in other parts (reel seat, grips, eyes, thread, special epoxy)
If I can find a blank for 60 I'll jump on it ASAP
>>696566
You've been to mudhole.com right? They have a ton of blanks. Not sure about 10+ Feet though.
I want to build a baitcasting rod for fluke/bucktailing. But not really sure what I want in a blank.
