How do I get better at detecting bites with texas rigged plastic worms? I fish them by raising the rod tip to 11, letting it drop and reeling in the slack. They usually bite while its dropping but since the line is slack I usually don't know something bit it until its too late. I've accidentally gut hooked some bass.

Any tips?

I actually hunt with a remington 700 but like to carry an SKS for plinking on hikes. It just werks.

I tossed a little bit of line in a kettle pond on Friday before I went to RI Saltwater show.
Nothing happening yet or I wasn't getting out to a deep enough drop off.
I talked to a diver and he said they are definitely out there.

the cold steel shovel is nice because its light weight, single piece construction and the slightly longer handle gives you a little more heft than the smaller fold up shovels.

If your looking for a good non folding hand shovel, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one for the price.

I'd say the best way to start is to pull up google maps on the are where you live in sattelite mode and find a decent patch of forest or grasslands or mountainous area (depends on your locality). If it is less than 4 miles to the spot go there on foot, if more, use other transportation. Take a few snacks with you, not too much, so you would fill up, but enough not to feel hungry. Also look up if the area has any nature wonders/monuments, if there are, visit them. If not, just hike on the present trails or go and bushwhack. Wear anything, that you don't mind screwing up. Later on you will figure out what would be better to wear, buy, while looking at various equipment. Just make shure, that the base of your shoe isn't super flat.

No need to go full gearfag and immediately buy lot of stuff, just follow those rules :
- Do not challenge yourself to much and go where it's easy and gear wont matter when you begin, then gradually adjust the difficulty (length, elevation, duration, snow, ice, rock, exposure...) as you get comfortable going out and as you gear up.
- Always tell someone where you go, and always be ready to turn back if you don't feel it.


This aside, I'd say, for short hike, like 2h, you can bring whatever you want, it wont really matter. For day hikes, you should take :
- 1L of water
- some snacks
- 1 extra layer of clothing
- wear running or hiking shoes


Then you can bring a map, compass, knife, food, poles, backpack, rainjacket, beanie, sunglasses, camera, goggles, hat, but you don't have to.

This is probably the second most important thing to bring when hiking. The most important is obviously water.

I actually prefer to live in urban areas and I come to /out/ to vicariously enjoy the scenery I don't have the patience to actually reach.

I use a misch metal rod opposed to a ferrocium as I prefer the burn characteristics of the additional elements (extra magnesium if I'm correct) as it prolongs the length of time the scrapped fragments burn for.

IMO it's bordering on meme tier now, everyone and their uncle has one and very few know how to use it properly.

I use it only for playing. In an emergency situation I'd use one of the half dozen lighters I have strewn through my gear (trouser pocket, jacket pocket, my cord bag, also in my fak)

Also I use a dedicated STRIKER to spark mine, fuck using my knife to do it (abuse abuse!)

they work well. are impervious to water but require more prep. they are by no means a "skill" friction fire is a skill. using a ferro rod is just a amtter of not being retarded, striking into a fluffy enough material.

and for god and all thats holy sake. dont use the blade of your knife

It's pretty good, the Sawyer mini is better tho and about the same price.

Boiling is the best option, depending on the debris you might still want to run it through a cloth or something.

Otherwise, pic related is pretty nice. Scoop a couple liters into the dirty bag, hang it on a branch, pop the cap off the Sawyer mini, and attach to your camelbak (where the mouthpiece goes) it sometimes requires a little squeeze to get going, but then you've got two liters of filtered water in a couple minutes, with little effort. Also, you can reuse the dirty bag as an additional water container, upping your carry capacity by an extra two liters if you need to.

In case you're wondering, the orange stuff is duck tape for repairs. Just happens to fit perfectly.

Currently getting raped by a blizzard in Indiana at the moment... Strangely enough they're saying it'll be 50 degrees by Sunday though. I'm hopeful that this is the last of winter. Yeah if I wanted to spend 135 on a rod before shipping I'd just buy pre-fab and cut the end of the handle off to make it weigh right.
I found a 10 foot medium fast blank that is rated from 1-4 ounces for 80 but then I'm gonna need 40 dollars in other parts (reel seat, grips, eyes, thread, special epoxy)
If I can find a blank for 60 I'll jump on it ASAP
