Who /overlanding/ here?
Honestly the most fun I've ever had. I love it all from the trail crawling to the camping. Man it doesn't get better than this.
Nice rig. My next trip is Washington/BC/Idaho this summer. This is from last year off Hole in The Rock road in Utah, about 50 miles from the nearest pavement

Hi, /out/, I'm going to be doing a solo hike over a few days through a national forest over Spring Break. Anything I should know beforehand?

You been camping in a national forest before?

Which park, opie?

Is it possible to cultivate my own species of spicy pepper in an apartment building or on my balcony in some planters? Where do I learn more about this?
I want my own special snowflake salsa.

Yes you can but it will take some time.

Sweet thanks amigo
I'd like some ideas for entertaining myself or a small two to three group activity. Around the campfire and towards the end of the night when we're done hiking/fishing
Only ones I can think of are
>By myself activities
Wood whittling
>With another person(s)
Poker/card games
I'd like some unconventional but still fun things to do that won't get boring after 20 minutes.
Get hammered.

/crowg/. Crows. They're kinda amazing. Post more.
Friend of mine who's a vet tech nursed an injured baby crow back to health two years ago. It still comes back to her house every few weeks.
>>700911
How do they recognize it?
>>700920
It's the only crow that will tap on her window and take a nap on her shoulder.
Howdy,
I'm just getting into Fly Fishing this year and was wondering what people here recommend in terms of gear. I currently live in Southwest Montana, so I'm looking for a 6 or 5 weight 4 piece 9 foot rod. I'm currently looking at one made by LL Bean on eBay, but there is also a "swap meet" for Fly Fishing gear coming up this Saturday. What brands have a reputation for being higher end, reliable, and durable. Also, does anyone know of a good bag for hiking that a travel tube could attach to?
>>700764
go to the fishing general
>>700764
You've chosen a good weight, size, and configuration for all-around general purposes. Beyond that you start splitting hairs and it doesn't really matter for a beginner.
I would suggest though that you don't go cheap on the rod. It is worth investing about 150 for a good rod, not much worse than the higher end rods, yet a huge step up from the $50-60 budget ones. Manufacturing technology is amazing nowadays and it's super expensive to make a fantastic rod. If you have to go cheap do so with the reel.
I would also get a damage warranty/insurance on whatever rod you choose because eventually breaking the tip is almost guaranteed.
I don't think you have to go too crazy if you're just starting out. I started on a crappy $20shakespeare, then once I moved to where there was no good fly fishing I upgraded for whatever reason.
For around $200 I got a fairly good kit at a sporting goods store, got a #8 for going after bass, pike, muskie, crappie, works well for me.
All my spinners & casters are Fenwick, they work well for me & hold up well. If I had to look for a new fly rod, I would check them out to see what the have.
Post your hammock set up, and list the gear you're using. Tarp, suspension, hammock, and insulation.
Yukon Tarp
Dutchware Hexon 1.6 single layer
ENO Atlas straps
DIY Costco Down throw under quilt and top quilt.
Bumping with more of my set up
nice! My hennesy. Ive upgraded tarps since this pic to the larger hex fly and also got a hammock gear over quilt. ill be getting my underquilt soon until then i use ny sea to summit sleeping pad.
> hammocks as so fucking gay
I hear two ponchos is better than tarp, How has your experience been?
Maybe I'm a fucking idiot, but how do you set up a poncho like a tarp? I get the basics, but what about the hood? How do you keep it from leaking through that?
Tie the hood with cordage ....
My friend has two milsurp ones I think they're polish, they combine to make what I think he called a lavi. Was like a 2-3 man round house and was very warm. All you needed extra was to fashion up a stick for one center pole. Neat huh
One for your hammock and one for your ground cloth. Perfect
Greetings, fellow /out/doorsmen.
It's not often that I interrupt your routine and perhaps it's not all that topical, but I have a small request to make - I represent this board in the 4CC, which, for the uninitiated, is a tournament between teams that represent boards run in Pro Evolution Soccer for a bit of fun, and I've run into a small dilemma, reaching out to you for help.
Specifically, I want music from you. Soundtrack needs updating, as it were, so pitch in and show me the songs that you feel encapsulate /out/ as a board. From your submissions, a new horn will be selected. Show me what you've got.
Just because its so bad/cringeworthy: omnia - earth warrior.
Pic unrelated.

fuck off to /v/ with this faggotry. i hate seeing this garbage shit up real interest boards every year like it has any representative bearing on the board's actual population.
protip: nobody here gives a fuck how well you play pretend soccer and nobody will feel any pride on your performane based off you "representing" /out/

$40 is the most I'm willing to spend. Cheapfag here and I just can't justify spending any more than that on a knife that I'll use just for batoning.
>nb4 "get an axe" I'd rather not drag one around when hiking to camping spots.
In that price range maybe Schrade? They have some thick knives for lower cost. Schrade SCHF36 is $26 on Amazon atm.

bahco wrecking knife it is
at that point, get a wedge, or chisel

I'll bite. What's the rules? Am I starting over from scratch or keep all my existing stuff? Am I camping my region, going someplace in particular, or traveling in general?
Is this overkill for a 3-5 day hiking emergency bag?

Hi guys /fit/ reporting in
My parents say I need to get out more cause all I do is play vidya games and go to the gym 4 days a week so here I am
what would be the optimal way to maintain maximum gains while camping, I take in about 3500 calories a day with a very particular macronutrient ratio so I was wondering how I could do that
I was going to bring a big wheely cooler with me to bring steaks and eggs n shit I could probably hike with that cause im pretty strong
also what are some /out/ approved workout routines I need to maintain my gains while on the trail and I cant go losing muscle mass do you think I could chop down a smallish tree and use it as a barbell for weighted movements
thanks everyone
Idk bro being /fit/ while being /out/ is hard
What I recommend is building an /out/ approved house and investing in a generator so you can play vidya and cook steak while being /comfy/ and (in your parent's eyes) /out/.

Look into tradesmen bodybuilder diets. Lots of slow burning carbs and such. I personally gave up on putting on weight with how hard I work but it is possible if you're dedicated enough.
>>699467
Truth be told though of you don't wanna go and enjoy the outdoors you never will embrace it and it'll be a waste of time. Talk to some people at your gym and see if anyone does hikes. How old are you and do you work?
Would it be effective to make a pond in my backyard to fish from?
Depends on how big of a pond we're talking about and what species of fish you want to stock it with. It also depends on if you'll be primarily doing catch and release fishing or if you'll be taking fish out of the pond on a regular basis to eat.
>>699246
You will need to buy things.
It will be expensive.
You will also need to dig a big hole.
It will hurt.
Birds and snakes will steal your fish.
It will not be funny.
What do you have to lose?
Tell you what.
Try burying a kiddie pool first, filled with gold fish.
Toss in some floating plants and an aquarium bubbler.
If they do well, proceed.
My 70 year old father put a pond in on our wood lot. I borrowed a d6 cat Dozer and damed off a brook that usualy runs dry in summer. He's a member of a local wildlife club they have built a fish hatchery box. It's currently has about 100000 rainbow trout eggs that will be hatching round April. They stock local lakes for fishing we usualy keep around 300 each year
You are gonna loose some from eagles, Hawks , raccoons n local kids sneaking in to fish. It's nice to be able to walk out back door n go fishing whenever you want.
We even got funded through wood lot owners associations. It's a fire pond not a trout pond. They paid for all permits n 70% of machine cost.
