How dangerous is it to get caught up in a thunderstorm while hiking in the mountain?

I mean I could die, but what counter measures could reduce the risk when the weather suddenly changes or smth?

It depends. Are you below the treeline? Find a low spot among trees and bunker down.

Are you above the treeline? Try to find a boulder to hide under or move aside rocks and hide deep down in the boulder field as possible. Then pray to whatever God seems closest

I wouldn't worry about lightning as much as flash floods or land slides depending on the terrain and how much rain that comes down.

okay, definitely makes sense since we had big floods in nothern bavaria during the past weeks.

I didn't used to believe in skin walkers until I went on a hunting trip with my uncle last Spring. But strange things happen in the woods at night.

We'd just settled down in his pop up tent trailer for the night, the sun now just below the horizon and the crickets chirping.

Then in the pitch black of the trailer interior I felt a strange sensation. Something spread my ass cheeks and pushed into my butt hole.

I didn't realize it was a skin walker at first, I am not an expert after all. But as the rigid, warm, pulsating ghost tendril or whatever from the skin walker rhythmically thrust into my anal cavity, I realized with cold terror the supernatural nature of what I was dealing with.

I lay there too scared to move until I felt something hot shoot out of it deep in my ass. Then it shrunk and became soft as it withdrew, vanishing to the spirit realm to consort with witches.

I know one thing for sure now, the mystery of what happened that night shows that there are more things than science can explain out in the woods, that mankind may never know the extent of.

This may have been an actual rape, and you should probably start therapy.

>I live in the most hyped outdoor country in the world (maybe Iceland)
>No forests to light fires in, plus its illegal everywhere
>Not cold enough for cozy gear, not hot enough for comfy gear
>Not big enough to get truly separated from civilization
>biomes are too small
>No reason to carry knife/gun, plus also probably illegal.
>have to pay to see the best shit, infested with tourists

Any of you been here?

How effective are road flares at fighting off bears?

I've been thinking of a dual road flare setup in the event I am accosted by one of those brutes.
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Somewhat effective, but not nearly as effective as bear spray. Carry bear spray and a high caliber handgun. Bonus, bear spray works on humans, too.
>>
>>791558
What if I toss a few flares ahead of time and spray the offending bear before dual wielding some reserve flares to fight and hopefully blind the bear before making it away to safety?

How hot do these things burn?
>>
>>791561
If I bear wants to fuck you up, you aren't going to have any time to light flares. There isn't any sizing up or shit talk.

Carry the bear spray on your hip. Make lots of noise while traveling. If you see signs of a bear, carry the spray in your hand. If you see a bear, also immediately draw the spray. It's most effective at about 20 feet. The idea is to create a cloud of irritant that the bear will inhale and his highly sensitive nose will become hell.

I need the Canadian topo maps for a magellan sportrak GPS(uses the old .img format for the maps).

Anyone have them? Only place i can find them(after pretty fucking deep searching) is on eBay, but its limited to sale only in america(and obviously i'm in Canada). Torrents, usenet, irc, mega, etc.. all came up empty.(I found one place on mega that claimed to have them, but it was obviously just spyware)

There's like 66megabytes, so if someone had the disc and could host them, id be super grateful.

So hiking in oregon near veneta and in this field theres a black cat 4-6 feet long not including tail and it catches something runs away and I was maybe 50 feet away and my buddy was right there and we both just stared confused as hell for a few moments. It absolutely looked like a jaguar. It was cougar sized but was jet silky black.

Could you name any animal besides a jaguar that would be like this? Note this is near veneta oregon

Moved completely cat like too could not have been a wolf we were very close to this thing but how could a jaguar be in oregon

>>
I'm from Arizona, so I don't have much experience with large cats, but it seems entirely possible to me that that was just a black bob cat/mountain lion. They look quite like jaguars to someone who has never seen one in person.
>>
>>791264
They can be black? This was much larger than a bob cat ive encountered those before
>>
The north American black cougar has never been photographed and sightings are thought to be errors, as per wiki. Now's your chance, OP, photo that Puma!

Just a simple folding knife.

Casual Kayaker here, why does it fucking matter? Why spend the money on a roof rack when I can LITERALLY achieve the same effect by strapping it down with some cheap ass straps I bought at the hardware store

I'm hiking at the end of this month. I've done it a couple of times before, but I've noticed that my thighs chafe together when I go for long walks.

Is there a way to minimise or eliminate this? Baby powder, or longer underpants? What would /out/ recommend?

Howdy /out/!

I want to hear your wildlife encounter stories. It doesn't have to be dramatic or devolve into a cock measuring contest. I just want to hear about some of your encounters, how you handled it, how it turned out, ect. And I'm talking about wildlife, not that /x/ spoopy shit. Green text optional.

>bear spray is next to me

>within 30 feet of my tent
>at this point they are coming from right of my head
>quietly squirm arm out of mummy bag
>grip bear spray, slide off safety
>sitting up now
>justfoundJesus.png
>the grunts continue, slowly moving away from me now
>hear breathing, bushes rustling
>jimmies are also a rustlin'
>the grunts continue away from me
>can't hear them anymore
>wait 5 minutes, sitting still
>crawl out of my bag, unzip tent, shine light all around
>still pretty spooped, but the badassness of the situation is starting to sink in
>put spray back, crawl back into mummy bag
>no chance of sleeping now
>starts to get light at 4:30
>never been so happy to see the sun
>finish trip on a pretty good high from the night

pic related: low quality shot of my tent illuminated at night, taken the same night as the bear encounter. I've been close to a black bear before while hunting, but never that close, and never while I'm in my undies. This was last weekend and it was a badass way to start the summer.

Hey /out/,
Have you guys ever used an army surplus store to prepare for a week or two innawoods? There's one near my house and I was wondering if any of you /out/doorsmen knew if it was mostly garbage or actually a good deal.

Pic related, these are the same kind of jungle boots I got as a kid in boy scouts and they tore my feet up pretty bad

Most issued military equipment really isn't that great, especially the older stuff you'll see in surplus stores. It's designed by people who don't have to use it, and produced from the lowest quality material in the most cut-rate way possible. They just need to equip troops with the bare minimum necessary to accomplish their task, so it's often usable, but just not really the best option.

Sometimes there are great pieces of gear that get issued though, like the American woobie or the West German folding shovel.
>>
My recommendation would be to not buy anything made before the 90s other then tools and maybe clothes.
Ergonomics and comfort was not really a big deal in military equipment back then.
>>
>>787123
I use shit from the military all the time while /our/ but that was stuff they put out recently. Those boots in OP pic are garbage. Even the issue boots now aren't that great. My unit bought us s2v boots every year.

The old alice pack is a beast it might be worth buying. The poncho + woobie is great. If they have the goretx shells for cheap i always loved mine, but i had to give that back when i left. The acu/bdu pants are pretty comfy too i left with a boatload of those and wear them innawoods.

For the most part those stores sell old shit or useless shit but there are some nice finds in them if you know what you're looking for.
