What are the pros and cons? What will I learn? Is it a waste of time or what?

It's long. It's well-traveled. You probably won't die if you aren't retarded.

A.T. is the most a casual hiker can hope to accomplish. You can tap out every 20 miles, hell you could pack nothing but Reese's cups because of this. It is standard level difficulty all around. You will not be challenged until you do the P.C.T. which will require more gear and more training and more money and more time.

Has anyone ever took their dirtbike out to go camping?

I'm restoring a 1990 Yamaha YZ250 and want to take it /out/

Any tips? As far as the bike should I be getting any certain modifications for a prolonged stay outdoors?

I don't know much about the dirt bike part so hopefully Mule sees your thread and posts.

What advice I can give you is try out your gear before you ride, test ride with what you plan to bring (to get a feel for the change in handling) and do a short test camp close to home.

Also ATGATT
ride safe m8

Solid advice, thanks.

This is my first real project, so I'm going to dismantle the entire bike and rebuild everything. Really excited. Hopefully at the end I'll know the in and outs of the entire things.

For a first trip, do you think I should bring my truck as a tag along or would just the bikes be acceptable?

I want to fly over the world and look down upon its vastness and beauty for years and years and years until my soul has meshed with it

Hey, /out/
I'm going on a camping trip soon, and I would like to try some bushcrafting. Do you guys have any cool ideas of things to make with a knife, hatchet, and supplies gathered from the forest?

A basket A fire A Bushcraft is for faggots sign. For real I fucking hate that word. Calling it outdoor activity or something.
>>
>>782861
Sorry if I used the wrong word, but I'm just looking for cool things to make with simple tools in the woods. No need to be a dick about it.
>>
Unless you wanna commit and build a cabin in the woods using hand tools dick proenneke style, I wouldn't bother.

Just get drunk and make a big bonfire. Doing bushcraft on a camping trip is meaningless, bushcraft isn't a hobby - it's a necessity to wilderness survival, and it's not fun.

How good is Hungary for going /out/?

Where are you from?
Hungary doesn't have really have big mountains and such, but there are a few pretty national parks. In what kind of /out/ related actions are you interested in? Mayhaps I can give you a few tips.
>>
>>782550
utter shit imo
first of all the hungarian wilderness is nonexistent
second hungarians hate foreigners and pretty much anyone not sitting in a car is third class citizen (second class if you drive a truck) and free game for bully
third it's pretty much impossible to do anything while out aside walking you are not allowed to make fire or camp except for concrete laid camping sites.
you are not even allowed to be off of marked paths in any national parks and pretty much all other woods are private land.
asshole hunters will shoot your dog even if on leash.
and there is litter everywhere the woods are just a great pile of garbage. plastic shit everywhere.
>>
>>782682
How the hell were you able to write down so much bullshit in the first place?
>first of all the hungarian wilderness is nonexistent
Not true mate, though most of the 'wild' part is controlled by mational parks, you are entirely free to wander them. In the northern parts of the country there are vast territories without any human population.
>hungarians hate foreigners
How is this? I don't even think any European country hates foreigners. I feel safe even on the Balkan. Tourism started to have a great impact on Hungarian economy in the past few decades, lots of people make a living by dealing with 'foreigners'. I can't even think of the reason you wrote this. Especially the car part. What the heck?
>you are not allowed to make fire or camp except for concrete laid camping sites
100% bullshit. There is literally a law that any landowner must tolerate you if you wish to camp a night on their field or forest. Same goes for national parks, though it is adviced to make fire on dedicated fireplaces (not conrete though), you can make fire anywhere if you keep the safety regulations.
>you are not even allowed to be off of marked paths in any national parks
Slowly it is starting to be pretty boring to point out all this bullshit. Though it is said that the national park takes no responsibility for your wellbeing if you leave the marked trails, you have to be a real autist to interpret this rule as 'you cannot leave the path'. Hell, the most interesting trails are mostly unofficial paths known by experienced hikers. But still, there are dozens of trails in most places, and that is mostly enough to explore everything, I mean except if you want to climb rocks or something, which you can usually do, it's just the park will take no responsibility for your safety.

Well this weekend I had plans to camp one night with friends, they all backed out.

I've been backpacking for a few years now, but somehow always end up with several people in our overnight trips.

Just going solo this weekend. Not really scared of anything, but for some reason the forest get spoopy at night. Northeast USA, New York state, not many animules to worry about.

Let's hear some tips how you guys solo.

Leave a detailed Itinerary with a family member of where you'll be sleeping and hiking with a phone call or text check in time the following morning if possible. Dont deviate from the itinerary you give out.

whelp, based on personal experience if you hear someone/something walking through the darkness don't go wandering about looking for it or trying to spook it. just sit tight at your little fire or whatever and nothing will happen to you. being insecure and wandering in the dark does you no favors whatsoever, regarding people or wild animals.

don't get too hammered. make sure you have plenty of comforts and things to occupy your mind - headphones, whittling, arts & crafts, night photography, etc. expend a reasonable amount of energy and time during daylight to collect firewood - don't put it off until after dark because it's a massive pain in the ass to be constantly wanding in circles in the dark looking for wood. firewood collection is one of those things that's 10x more important and time-consuming when you're alone. depending on your fire it might dominate 50% of your time if you put it off until late. don't get spoop'd. the forest is actually rather comfy and safe at night, just the darkness makes it seem foreboding. remember that you're pretty much hidden from everything. As a New Englander I assume you may hear/see coyotes, maybe a skunk, or possibly even hear a largr animal (bear, deer, moose) wandering about. Ain't no thing. Have bear spray with you for peace of mind, sleep with it handy in the 0.1% chance a curious bear sniffs through your camp after you're asleep. It won't happen but don't be a dolt about that sorta thing. Feel free to sleep-in. The silence and solitude of camping alone means it's your personal vacation, make it cumpfy and make it last.

Never heard of a country that bans them for personal ownership and being carried for a "genuine" reason, such as camping or work.

I have an acquaintance who just heard i'm going to be camping this season, and offered to sell me his old hand-held GPS. Its a *VERY* old model... Like, i remember this same model being used by my dad a decade ago when he did surveying work. My question is, is there any use to it now a days? Or would the maps and everything be so outdated(and no longer supported) that it would just be dead weight.

I dont want to carry my fragile-as-fuck on-a-contract phone(Already bought a PAYG burner phone incase there would be an emergency, and somehow i get a signal) and i also dont want to spend $400 on a new handheld GPS which would get no use beyond the occasional camping trip.

So does anyone on /out/ still rock an old Etrex Venture? Are they able to update the maps?

Do you think the forests changed so much in 10 years that the maps are useless?

All you need gps for is coords anyway. You should have a paper map.

It would depend on the price really. If getting a power bank is cheaper I wouldn't buy it and just use a cheap android phone.

How to deal with littering scumbags? A possible solution.

>Saw this guy toss trash out of his truck while he was driving in to my neighborhood

>Found out where he lives (in my neighborhood)

>Pretty sure it's some 16-18 year old faggot driving a truck his daddy bought for him

Thursday is trash day, and im going to kick his trash can and spill his trash all over his lawn the night before. The truck comes to pick it up. If it's not in the can, they won't be obligated to pick it up. No harm done to them.

Bad idea? Assuming someone sees me, ill just say it was an accident and clean it up. If no one sees my face though, im just going to run out of there. It'll be around 10 30 pm so no one else should be outside.

This won't really teach anyone a lesson, and probably just fuck up the enviroment even more, but, I want your opinions on this. Because unless it's absolutely the dumbest thing you've ever read, i'm doing it.

So, bad idea? Would you do it? What happens if i get caught and someone starts chasing me?

ready for the "youre a fucking dumbass" posts

other then satisfying your sense of revenge what is this going to accomplish? no direct cause and effect tied to the littering to discourage it. they'll just think it was coons or some shithead kid

i realize this is nig behavior, but if i wasn't black, i'd still want to do it. i dont just go kicking trashcans for no reason, im not THAT niggerish

How can you guys hate a man who's only flaw was "stupidity"?
He's done what we have all thought about doing. We've all had these thoughts of leaving society behind and being completely sick of everything.
How can you hate someone, just because he couldn't survive? We're not judging someone on their survival prowess, see him as a human being for god sake.
He did what he thought was right, and I think most of us are a lot like McCandless, maybe not in his naivety but his dreams.
