> In b4 fedora.

Im interested in reading Ayn Rand and want to know whether to read Atlas Shrugged or The Fountain. I have a philosophy degree so am not afraid of it being dense, but just want to know what is her best?

Fountain Head without a doubt.

Well it depends I guess, do you want to hear her philosophy wrapped in terms of artistic genius and individuality or wrapped in terms of capital genius and individually.
>>
>>8490929

Either is fine, ive just found when i learned about her in school i had an obvious distaste towards it and her - but over the years have found ive moved from utilitarianism, to subjectivism, nihilism and then almost objectivist so would like to give her a fair appraisal. Whichever is a more captivating book i guess. Have you read both?

old stuff. saw that ages ago.

makes it easier for those of us in class who can actually read shakespeare though. survival of the fittest.

On another note, perhaps it helps a younger audience get used to the plot, if not the themes of such literary work?
>>
>>8490871
But the means used to explain the plot absolutely rob the work of any nuance or style whatsoever. If you replace a character seeing his beloved with "lol saw a fit bird #player crying emoji" you're not going to get very far in communicating the plot of the original.
>>
>>8490881
Those who don't understand or appreciate literature will get this book. Even if they read the original play, they wouldn't care about nuances or style anyway. If they understand emoji and text-speak and understand at least something, it's not too bad a deal for them.

Anyone else depressed that you can't really learn anything from books without applying the information? It's like I could gain more from exposing a single book than I could gain by just reading 100 different books.

Literally nothing has changed after tons of books except for marginally improved thought processes in specific situations. Shitposting on 4chan has widened my vocabulary more than all the books I have read. Is it some myth that the subconcious is doing major work in the background?

You read books to gain knowledge of other people's experiences. You don't gain a personal understanding of it until you actually apply it in a real life situation of your own. If we could all "learn" through others, we wouldn't be living our own lives would we? We wouldn't need to try things out for ourselves if we could get the info from a book or another living person.
>>
>>8490763
The theoretical is the basis of the practical. Alone it is nothing but clinical masturbation.
>>
>>8490853
>>8490864
It's a dilemma because you need to start at some point. I can't really ask how to learn something since it's pointless. I should start and see what works from the dozens of opinions I already heard. Still there is always the delusion that there is some key information around that would make things easier.

It is interesting, we had to read an excerpt from it today in class. It has me interested.

Mainly just about an expose to the meat industry, it was very popular and very controversial in the late 1900's. And I think it still lives up to it today.

>>

It's a fancy word for "childish" and a frail attempt at justifying a lack of emotional control, temperance, and self-discipline that comes with spending one's life doing what feels good because you're not hurting anyone.
It seems fine initially, everybody wants to have fun, then the lack of restraint shows after you're too fat to run, addicted to fast food and whatever other fun chemicals you wanted to have a neato time with, and emotionally underdeveloped from running away from negative vibes.

I have a lot of hedonic friends and their weakness honestly disgusts me. You have to understand that choosing one action inadvertently chooses the counterbalance that comes with it.

Suppose there was is situation where one is trying to explain, to someone else, something that is extremely important; however, the person that is being explained to is not receptive as they do not know or understand the context and how complex the situation actually is and therefore think of it in a black and white simplistic manner—where they end up only being able to see that their own opinion on the matter is the correct one (even though they weren't there for the context and have very little information regarding the subject.). It also doesn't help that this person has a passive aggressive grudge against the explainer.

Moreover, the seriousness of the matter, and the final decision will be had by this person—and that decision will very much negatively impact the explainer's life and that of many others.

They cannot get past their personal bias and see the full situation; let alone even be open to hearing information about the matter as they are prone to getting angry and agitated whenever the topic comes up.

I know Wittgenstein was very much someone who thought that many of the problems we face are because of language and communication, and that the way we communicate can greatly impact the outcome of a situation.

What advice would he give to one who is trying to explain to this other person the context and seriousness of this situation in order to take away that personal bias and black and white thinking so that they can see the situation from more angles and perhaps come to a more rational conclusion?

I believe he read Indian poetry in that kind of situation.

To my mind I guess he would "show" rather than "tell" as reasoning with a "picture" is often more readily apparent. I think you could also suggest he'd stop reasoning and just use physical force as reasoning would be useless and the real world would have to make itself apparent.

What are your thoughts OP?
>>
>>8490721
Two quotes for you OP:

>And this is how it is: if only you do not try to utter what is unutterable then nothing gets lost. But the unutterable will be - unutterably - contained in what has been uttered!

>Telling someone something he does not understand is pointless, even if you add that he will not understand it. (That so often happens with someone you love.) If you have a room which you do not want certain people to get into, put a lock on it for which they do not have the key. But there is no point in talking to them about it, unless of course you want them to admire the room from the outside! The honourable thing to do is to put a lock on the door which will be noticed only by those who can open it, not by the rest.

>After the monumental translation of The Odyssey and even more transporting Iliad, he Englished the four Gospels, the Book of Acts and Epistles, and the Revelation whose author he did not think was the Apostle John. There was one evangelist he preferred for his elegant Greek, and when recovering in hospital from surgery he said that his doubts about the Faith had disappeared "somewhere in Saint Luke." He announced that he would be baptized at Easter. At the public baptism, with closed eyes and head uplifted, Dick solemnly recited the Creed whose Greek was his vernacular. He instructed that at his funeral this story be told to all his academic colleagues

Erotica's sole purpose is to draw in the reader and elicit a response, much like any other genre; so they, in theory, should have just as much literary value.

However, erotica is often created by mediocre authors who focus more on immediate gratification, rather than developing an arc. Thus, it is difficult to find "good" erotica.
