Which fedoracore book is regarded as the best?
The God Delusion.
I'd love to sit in a crashing airplane together with someone like Hitchens, just to see how quickly he finds his way back to god.

How's lit speed up their reading?
I'm currently at around 500 wpm. Any faster and comprehension begins to degrade. Any tips?
>>8494409
I'm sorry to interrupt, but why speeding?
>>8494409
read a summary beforehand or skim once before reading
terrible if youre a plotfag but knowing the framework everything fits into beforehand saves so much time
>>8494416
Read quickly, more books at once. I'm not strictly "speed-reading", just want to increase my speed without harming my comprehension
>read dune series expecting some fun pulpy scifi
>get the most tragic story about future vision I've ever read
Why is this series so underrated? Nobody gives a shit and yet the underlying allegory of space child muhammad looking into the future of Islam and having an existential crisis because the only way to stop it is becoming giga space hitler so nobody ever gets enslaved in the same way again is so fucking compelling.
The subtle behind the scenes manipulation of the benefits gesserit essentially doing tenth level meme magic and social manipulation that you only get if you look for it
The concept of genetic memory being explored to its fullest in a way I've never seen in anything else
The way all these archetypal myth characters are still written like people who just want to be happy with their families but can never have it, and the sheer oppressive tragedy of monarchs destroying the people around them
The insanely in depth realistic picture of future vision that is both inverted and subverted throughout the course of the series
That one weird arc where a girl got possessed by the genetic spirit of a fat gay pedophile and started /ss/ing with a bunch of young guards while turning into a fat slob herself.
Dune thread.

The worms were cool
I left the book at my dad's house and never went back to get it so all I really remember is the kid reciting a prayer to himself and some stuff about giant worms

I can't stop listening to this guy.
His voice is so soothing, and I'm just a sucker for his philosophy. I've read his 2 books, the way of zen and The Taboo.
Last couple of days I'm in some kind of weird position in which I can't stop thinking about liberation/ nirvana as he explains it, and I'm more scared than ever of the thought of attaining it, and I just wanna continue leading my normal life, yet I can't focus on anything cause in the back of my mind I'm always thinking about this shit.
What does /lit/ think of him?
>>8494339
He's great, but gets repetitive. The more of his writings you begin to digest, the more you realize he's reiterating the same theme, which is 'go with the flow.'
I'd say read 'The Wisdom of Insecurity' and call it a day with Watts. Also read up on the idea of a 'mad monk' or someone possessing 'crazy wisdom.'
I find that Buddhist tradition is useful to understand Watts because the more you read about his personal life the more empty his words become. But, his whole point is that he's a sinner, not a saint. He is flawed, as are we all. Keep that in mind.
>>8494354
i didn't find much info about his personal life, but I know he was alcoholic/ adulterous. But shouldn't we separate message from the messenger?
>>8494380
Sure. It's just more difficult to do when the messenger is espousing a certain way to live.
That being said, I don't think Watts' lifestyle contradicted most of his message.
is he a hack?
>Only speaks English and irrelevant Jewish languages (Hebrew's day has passed), failed to become fluent in Latin, Greek, German, etc, despite years of dedicated study
>His criticism is hit or miss, few insights, and mostly exaggerations of his own opinions.
>Self-appointed himself as some kind of guardian of literature. Despite this, his works on criticism, including series he edits, are mostly filler and will be forgotten after his death.

Does having a sitcom episode made about them, tarnish an author's reputation?
https://theawl.com/larry-davids-rough-night-out-with-the-aging-literary-lion-c111a1bc64cb#.r2s6fvpik
>>8494200
Depends on the sitcom, if its something patrician like MASH then no, only enhances it
>>8494200
The Seinfeld episode with John Cheever (along with some reviews I've read of his works) is the main reason I have not read him. So, yea I guess so.
Isn't that Richard Yates?
was he just a poor man's Sam Delany
I think Ballard is better to be honest
>>8494104
Ballard is better. Delany isn't bad by any means but it's like he intentionally wanted to be a less than popular author.
>>8494209
in the sense that Delany probably felt it would make him look more "elite" in terms of the literary world if he wasn't as popular.
Tell me more about rene guenon
for instance would it be worth it to get his book "symbols of sacred science" over something done in this decade?
>>8494099
Pretty cool. I guess the gist of it is not one tradition has a monopoly on the universal but the essential is that your tradition is a tradition with a hierarchy.
Although it's baffling why Guenon, a Catholic, seems to have completely ignored Eastern Orthodoxy, which put tradition at the center of their religion, and opted for Sunni Islam instead.
He was probably right about Islam (at least in his time) upholding it's traditions in the face of modernity better than Catholicism. Who knows if he'd feel that way today.

Has anyone read this? I'm on chapter 4 and don't have that much of a grasp on the narrative. I know Ballard said in the opening you can pretty much pick and choose paragraphs that catch your eye, but what can I really get out of this book?
i read it like he recommended it: i opened it every now and again at a random section and went backwards and forwards from it
i enjoyed it, there's a lot of good stuff in there and it worked well
>>8494092
Honestly I would be screwed if I wasn't reading the annotated version where Ballard explains some of the paragraphs. I find it hard to follow since I'm pretty unfamilar with the 60s and 70s eras in general.
I keep asking what am I supposed to be getting from this. It just seems like some pop culture references mixed with violence and obscenity purely for the sake of it but not really offering a commentary on any of the real world events or characters it makes references to. Again, I'm only about a quarter way through the book and reading it in order
>>8494074
What is remarked on in this book is so removed from common experience, in such a shocking presentation, that it doesn't really need to be consciously contrasted, unless one is autistic.
There are only 2 worthwhile stories in this collection, the rest are just variations of those two. Have your wheat, then move on.

Spoken like a true cuck. You deserve it.
Just finished The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I've read that Goethe himself disliked the piece (and romanticism as a whole) and many reviews I read beforehand called it trivial and hated Werther for the fact that he couldn't just "man up".
Anybody else agree? I for one thought it was entertaining to read such profound deep seated heartache, especially after being dumped a few months ago. Definitely made the sentiment of unrequited love feel more ubiquitous and beautifully captured, however over dramatic the character is (which gives some good laughs too).
Also what Goethe should I read next? Thinking Faust
>>8493980
It's a great description of a teenager's worldview. Captures all the major points beautifully.
>>8494000
Trips of truth.
>>8493980
I don´t agree with the people who think he should just "man up". Other than that i feel exactly like you after i read it a few months ago, was also dumped before.
I also read Faust I recently and while being interesting i liked TSoYW more.
