Is this board actually smart and cultured?

Sorry, I don't have time to lurk.

- /mu/ is about music but they only talk about pop and hip-hop like Animal Collective and Kanye West

- /tv/ is about cinéma but they only talk about superhero flicks and HBO

- /g/ is about technology but they only talk about video cards and smartphones

I guess what I'm saying is that a lot of boards' userbases aren't really well-versed in their own supposed fields of expertise. Is /lit/ different? Do you have good taste, or do you read the equivalents of Animal Collective/HBO/smartphones (David Foster Wallace, James Joyce, etc.)

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard[b] to enter the Kingdom of God. 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”

Yeah, there is nothing Patristic about his theology. It's just Aristotle with some forced logic on a number of things to justify conclusions he arrived at beforehand.

Fuck me, my dudes. I lost the name of a philosopher.

I believe he was 20th century, could have been 19th but I doubt it. He believed in the concept of a truly open and free democratic system in which all voices are expressed and heard. He's been getting a little extra burn recently because the Internet more or less realized this ideal.

Help me out here dudes. Will provide some form of riches upon receipt.

like Dylan thomas or bob dylan? i guess i should also add that I really like it when rhyming poems arent part of a musical act. I think theres a kind of purity to it. But it seems so hard to find in contemporary poetry.

As a salesman
I try to learn about many things.
Helping people feel engaged and to be honest make the transaction emotional and not logical(more profit and quicker deals)

I am at the top of my department and I will say reading has helped.
My issue is when people try to get me to talk about my self I am truly a boring person
So if they are not self centered( a rare occasion) I am like a fish out of water.

Are there any books about becoming more interesting /lit/ would suggest?

Tl;dr op is a boring fuck who works 60 hours a week and goes to school full time with two kids who doesn't get out much any more

Go for immediate relateability. Start with things you know and are true - "yeah my son just turned 6 too, kindergarten is crazy right?"
Use little things you notice about them to guide you along, and don't just be afraid to make shit up that relates to them. Just because they aren't completely self interested doesn't mean that you're not there to make a sale anymore.
Are you still having trouble projecting a genuine persona?

You're done, man. Game over. Dont bother trying to be interesting, you have kids. Focus on them. There's no reason for you to be interesting.

Will immersing myself in /lit/ and other forms of art make me happy? Tried reading some Whitman today but couldn't really get into it. Currently reading The Big Sleep.

trust the titles. if reading big sleep, means time for a nap...
>>
going outside and engaging with real life will make you happy if not a little bit nervous before you get used to it. the same as anyone who is out of practice at a particular activity.

also going into something like whitman having not experienced 19th century culture or poetry beforehand will not be of any benefit to you, even if you believe in the transcendent qualities of 'real literature'. you'll need secondary sources or annotated versions or something to make the experience worthwhile. don't bother reading in chronological order either. that's just a meme
>>
Books or any artform alone will never make a person happy

It's sharing your love of them with others that brings real happiness

Alright well I'll just post it here anyway. I think I'm a little better than the average /lit/izen but feel free to be nitpicky.

Larf emerged from his hovel into the blizzarding snow. The yak hide door flap nearly tore off in the wind.

"Gli, goak cun donar," Larf muttered, pulling the flap back in place.

He grit his teeth, then spat into the snow already piling at his boots. He had a long trek to Sunar the Witch Doctor's hut. His wife had been ill six days, and there was little hope for her recovery without intervention from the Gone Elders. He set off at once.

Larf was not long on his way, had not even made it to the edge of the Gundrahan Woods, when Izbek, the Nylfof, alighted on the shoulder of his silvery Brang hide jacket.

"Go-aaaa," it shrieked to be heard over the howling of the storm.

"Yipyip," Larf shouted.

Izbek understood. Xe flew back to Larf's hovel to check on Xanarafaran-Bega. There was no telling how long Larf would be gone, and his wife might need company or someone to fetch her stew from the Mess Hall in the center of the village.

Larf reflected on the value of friendship. He and Izbek had not always been so close. The day they met, they were competing over the affection of a Goobarro, whose triple breasts were famed as far as the Shoshummagan River in the Dry Land. As Larf courted her, recounting an old Shufa joke, Izbek had flown to the ceiling of the Mess Hall for the best possible vantage of the Goobarro's cleavage. As Nylfof's are wont to do, Izbek excreted at xis very first glance, just as Larf was reaching the punchline.

"Duzo dookyar?" He said, struggling to hold back his laughter. "Dayo doggar!"

At that exact moment two small turds fell in rapid succession on to the Goobarro, one between the left and middle breast, the other between the middle and right breast. She slapped Larf and stormed off, practically in tears, before Larf had managed to recover from his own joke. She thought he was laughing at her.

Larf grinned into the flakes that battered his face. He had tried to give Izbek such a thrashing. When Izbek excreted on him in fright, Larf broke into laughter and the two became quick friends.

I'm almost done this book and it's been okay so far at first I have to admit that I didn't really like the main character because he just felt like a giant gary stu and it was super boring to read all the description of how badass he is but after making it nearly to the end I feel like he's become an interesting character in his own right. I don't understand why people compare this series to the tolkien and george rr martin though it feels a lot more like a generic fantasy book to me does it get better-er in the later books?
