Does 2001: A Space Odyssey end with the destruction of the human race?

>He put forth his will, and the circling megatons flowered in a silent detonation that brought a brief, false dawn to half the sleeping globe. Then he waited, marshaling his thoughts and brooding over his still untested powers. For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next.

>But he would think of something.

Why is there no history of military service in any of his biographies? It was still mandatory when he was in his twenties.

Why do you guys have such a boner for drab, plain books about the mundane lives of ordinary people? Why don't you read something interesting and fun, maybe you wouldn't be such bitter fucks.

>by my recent infatuation, the late David Foster Wallace, whom I’m currently gorging on indiscriminately in a manner that I’m told betrays my standing as a poorly disciplined autodidact. I’ll try not to burden this volley of questions and answers with too many mentions of David Foster Wallace.

>What’s the last great book you read?

>After thinking about this long and hard, the last truly great book I read would have to be “Infinite Jest,” by David Foster Wallace.

>After thinking about this long and hard, the last truly great book I read would have to be “Infinite Jest,” by David Foster Wallace. Yeah, sorry. This was my first exposure to Wallace’s work, only a month or two ago, and I don’t think there’s anything about the novel that doesn’t impress me: its stream of satirical invention, with conventional dating gone in favor of a subsidized calendar and the Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment; its mandarin prose that perfectly conjures the trancelike drift of a modern consciousness overwhelmed by detail; and its breathtaking risks with structure, so that the whole experience seems to pivot upon a climactic resolving chapter — either right at the end of the narrative or right at the beginning — which does not actually exist and which therefore requires the reader to create it herself, from slender inference. I think the moment I probably fell in love with Wallace as a writer was the point where I realized that I was actually meant to be irritated by all of the occasionally crucial footnotes. An author after my own heart, and a genuine modern American diamond in the tradition of Thomas Pynchon, Robert Coover and Gilbert Sorrentino.

>In such ways, those who had been great lords in this world earned a poor, wretched, nasty living there below. Philosophers on the contrary, and those who had been indigent in this world had their turn at being fat lords in that world beyond.

>I saw Diogenes, in a large purple robe, a sceptre in his right hand, parading magnificently about like a prelate and driving Alexander the Great to distraction for having failed properly to patch his breeches; he paid him for it with great thwacks from his stick.

Thoughts on these lines in my novel?

(the first sentence)
"Only one enemy remained; two if you counted God."

(particularly proud of this one)
"In the war for day and night; Right is wrong and wrong is right; On the edge of darkness and light; The eighth of seven joins the fight"

(two of my favorites)
"Order occurs when an object is in the right place at the right time"

"The wonderful thing about humanity: we always want more"
