I am a 42 year old single father of my 15-year-old son, Tyler (names changed, of course). His mother died soon after he was born and I have no plans for remarrying any time soon, nor do I have any other children.
Now, on to the real issue. Lately, I have noticed Tyler spending a lot of time in his bedroom. This normally isn't too concerning, but the other day I was putting laundry in his drawers, and I stumbled up on what seemed to be, well, about twelve YA novels. A lot of books that have gone missing in the couple of month were all in there. I won't go into detail, but it seems like they were made for insertion.
What should I do, if anything? I don't want to seem like a snooping dad, but I'm mostly concerned with his health. Could he hurt himself?
>>8633079
You should call the emergencies RIGHT NOW. With this much YA novels in his room, it is possible that he has already taken a lethal dose. And even if he did not take a lethal dose, he could end up with permanent mental problems, like retardation and severe plebism.
As soon as you get hold of him, shove his face in your favorite copy of Finnegans Wake while chanting "Brékkek Kékkek Kékkek Kékkek!" and pray to DFW that it is not too late for him.
>>8633079
No need to be so extreme. Just have a serious discussion with him and try to give him better reading suggestion.
If that fails, make a pyre out of them and lock him in his room with the Greeks.
>>8633079
>They were made for insertion
Hm
How do you distinguish yourself intellectually in an age where everyone is either a wikipedia expert or has a BA in fingerpainting?
By having a high IQ and doing something useful with it, i.e. go into STEM.
>>8633067
No, I meant intellectually. Engineers and the like are generally absorbed by technical matters, and don't do much that does not involve technology.
I suppose there have been a few doctors with literary presence - Thomas Browne, Mori Ogai - but I'm drawing a blank on the technological crowd.
>>8633067
Kek good one, genuine advice only please.
honestly I have some interesting ideas but I can't write so they'll never get published
>>8632934
True.
And even if you can write, it's likely that they won't get published, too
You can't write (well) because you can't think (well) which means your ideas are good to someone who thinks poorly which makes it unlikely that they actually are good
>>8632934
As in
>Interesting ideas
>Hegel level prose
Or
>Interesting ideas
>Can't even begin to write because they're mostly unconscious and hardly explainable
????
So I was talking with my psychologist about memes and 4chan and irony and my agreement with scholars such as harold bloom that you should waste time on books that aren't the best, and I eventually raised the question asking, has culture become dumbed down? I pointed out the rise of interest in young adult literature, and the rise of donald trump, and the fact that there doesn't seem to be notable writers now a days. People just don't seem that interested in reading classics like Moby Dick. Your thoughts?
>>8632871
>talking about memes and 4chan in real life
Kill yourself
I can't imagine trying to explain 4chan or internet culture to somebody who uses it to read wikipedia and chat on facebook.
>>8632897
My psychologist has never even used facebook, let alone comprehend what 4chan is. Trying to explain it to her is very challenging.
has there been cases where academics draw complex interpretations over really simple works?
cases where the autor is simply asked and then he answers: I dunno, lmao, lol.
>>>/global/rules/3
>You will not post any of the following outside of /b/: ... indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?")
Speak clearly, you fucking nerd.
>>8632875
I mean cases where the college professors are clearly making up shit drawing complex interpretations over simple works.
>>8632875
>expecting frog fucks to post decent threads
Where can I find books about scientific racism?
>"The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy"(by Lothrop Stoddard)
>"the passing of the great race"(by Madison Grant)
>"The racial elements of european history"(by hans f. k. günther)
>>8632857
Race, IQ and Jensen by Flynn
Are these books banned?
>>8632925
Probably just out of print and treated as fetishes by /pol/-tier racists.
>finish ulysses
>nothing else interests me anymore
>order a copy of finnegans wake
>go with penguin classics edition because it seems like the most popular one
>what's the worst that could go wrong ?
>book finally arrives
>can't wait to start reading
>open book
>see this
Why does Penguin hate readers so much ? Which edition of this book can I get that isn't filled with errors ?
Oxford worlds classics. It looks the best as well.
>>8632914
Thanks. I didn't want to get it because, ironically, their edition of Ulysses is a reproduction of the incorrect first edition. What a confusing situation. I also don't like how bloated the Oxford versions are and how flimsy the binding is.
>See classic
>Good price
>Seems like a good edition, pretty cover and whatnot
>About to pick it up
>See ''the text has been revised for modern readers''

Was about to read this when I read it was the second in a trilogy. Is it necessary to read the Cloven Viscount before this book or is the trilogy only thematically linked?
only thematically linked, and barely at that
it's fine to read them separately
>>8632803
Thank you, also do you think The Baron in the Tree is a good starting place for Calvino? I considered starting with Invisible Cities but this one seemed easier to digest.
>>8632816
Read if on a winters night a traveller, it is the most fun I've ever had with a book for sure.
What determines that a country has/doesn't have great authors? Or are there GOAT-level works in every language, but we just don't care about those written in less relevat ones?
>>8632752
There are like five indisputable GOATS everything else is up to preference.
>>8632752
4chan's literature board decides
>>8632757
France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Britland, Russia
Does /lit/ self-flagellate? Sounds like a pretty /lit/ habit to me. I think we had a thread about this months ago here.
>>8632715
Yeah, I browse 4chan
No. We do a lot of self-fellating, however.
>black author
>only writes about "muh racism"
>>8632711
Read Invisible Man then. Genuine masterpiece
>>8632711
What about Dumas?
>>8632711
Ironically, the only good black authors are the ones dead.
How to get better at writing in English?
I'm a non-native English speaker somewhere at the advanced level. I guess that I have a near-native reading comprehension (of course I struggle to read authors like Pynchon or Melville a bit), but I feel like I can't express myself in writing creatively enough. Should I just read as much books as possible and hope that my brain will absorb everything subconsciously and thus my writing would get better?
>>8632703
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation
>>8632703
Why do want to write in English? What's your mother tongue? Why do ESLs never state what their mother tongue is when they introduce themselves?
>>8632728
>Lithuanian
>Why do want to write in English?
1) academic papers
2) copywriting (not many people can produce a coherent English text in my country)
3) creative shitposting on lit
Anyone got the pdf?
>>8632690
i don't
just the EPUB
Will he be remembered?
Who?
>>8632688
By whom?
Lit-theory students will know him as long as Norton continues to excerpt "Anxiety of Influence" in their theory anthology.
The rest of what he's known for right now - his carping about Harry Potter, the pop criticism books - will be period trivia.
Basically no.
>There ain’t too much I can say about this song except that the answer is blowing in the wind. It ain't in no book or movie or TV show or discussion group. Man, it's in the wind — and it’s blowing in the wind.
Well excuse me im not awarded with a nobel, but i don't understand what did he mean by this.
