Schopenhauer was wrong in his righteousness.
He is correct on everything he says, but he cares too much about them. That's why he is called the most negativistic philosopher, because of phrases like "Happiness is only the short relief of pain" and "The meaning of life is to relieve of pain" which basically means that "Happiness is the meaning of life", yet if you told him that he would deny it.
In my opinion he is ridiculous. He obviously had depression, and that's a reason for him to be sad, but yet he always refused to accept that there are people who can enjoy life no matter how harsh it may be. As Zapffe once defined as Sublimation, ignoring such negative outlets and focusing on the positive ones.

On the left we have Matthieu Ricard, who has been hailed by scientists as absurdly upbeat. And on the right we have Schopenhauer, the Pessimist

Would you say this is what Nietzsche did with his philosophy? And if not, can you point me to some who did?
Soo whats the deal with this guy? Currently reading this, finding it extremely overwrought even for prose...

Shut the fuck up it's not a very distant year from a long time ago no one cares about Tao Lin it's as of right now this year so don't bring things up from prior years in this year we'll become bored and we don't go on the internet to become bored so if you're asking whether this boring book is or is not really boring you on a board where people go not to be bored then you're going to be doing the wrong thing on that board, the thing people don't want you to do, so stop it. Go away with this thread. Remove this thread from the board. Go away

It seems that I can only read around 20 pages before losing comprehension. Does this happen to anyone else and if so, what can I do to read for longer periods?
>>8630259
You need to go back to when you were in your mother's womb, or to be safe, to just before, and stop your parents from drinking ten standards every single day.
Try cutting back on watching television, if you're really interested in reading then you might not miss it, and don't read where there's a television on in the room.
the same goes for mindless web-surfing, as fun as a site as stumbleupon, 4chan, or [spoilerreddit[/spoiler] might be, it's only another factor that impacts your attention span (>What's the next webpage? What about the next one? There are too many words here let's see the next webpage. Stumble. Stumble. Stumble!)
When you start reading, set a page or time limit and don't stray from it unless there's an emergency. It's up to you to decide what counts as an emergency and what doesn't.
Turn off your phone or leave it in another room, my phone s really good at taking attention away from my work, so I do everything I can, short of burying it in the yard, to make sure I don't have to look at it when i'm studying/writing/reading.
Try reading in quiet, comfortable places with few points of distraction. If your house is too busy, make a plan to head to the library, alternatively you can go to a coffee shop or even the park, as they're typically low volume.
Mosst importantly, have fun with it. If you're reading something that isn't catching your attention then take a break from it, read something else or move on to another activity until you're ready to go back to it. If the material just isn't enjoyable then consider dropping it for good and move on.
Hope these points help, I tried my best in keeping the post short, lest you lose focus halfway through ;^)
Why are people so against taking breaks?
In Swann's Way, Proust talked about taking regular breaks during reading, even when he was an ardent reader.
The idea that you have to read a 300 page novel/book from cover to cover in a day (and, importantly, without breaks!) is a weird fucking meme. The subsequent idea that you can read a lot and quickly while having perfect recollection of the book and understanding all the intricacies of the book in one pass -- that's also fucking bullshit.
Not all books are the same. Some are easier to read than others; some have different font and typesetting choices.
More importantly, you might not get to the entire Western canon. How awful! But if you're just reading so as to say "my eyes have looked all of the words of the Western canon", then you might as well stop.
tl;dr: Read your books at a pace that feels natural to you. Read and possibly re-read to better appreciate the text.
ITT: high quality magazines and newspapers.
I'd like to keep up to date with the world but most news outlets are worthless.

There are good news outlets
The daily stormer

Stormfront
Breitbart
Fox News
Info wars
I had a trial subscription for the London review of books. Some great think pieces and in-depth stuff but anything political is just irritating because of how left-leaning they are. That's the reason I dropped it: too much white guilt and hatred of men/the right.
>>8630258
Please don't group storm front with breitbart. The former is a neo nazi forum the latter is a conservative news site.
There's a book festival in my town this weekend, but I've never heard of any of the people who will be there. Is it worth it to go anyway?

Perfectly correct post otherwise.
When and why did literature become more concerned about style than content?
>>8630191
Form is content
>>8630197
sure form requires content to be expressed, but no one is going to spend 40 pages describing a dress unless one cares more about style than content
When it became a widespread belief that there are no new ideas, which makes content irrelevant as it has no novelty.

How do you deal with loneliness while reading?
I never feel so lonely as when I'm reading.
maybe you just don't read good enough, meaning that you are distracting yourself too much
Surround yourself with positive people only, refrain from browsing any new-age ideology communities that only make you more fucked up (like redpill). In time this will make you feel how you're supposed to feel, in harmony with yourself. There's a difference between being alone and feeling alone. Being alone is ok, feeling alone is unnecessary and hinders you.

What do you mean you can't? You can, you just don't want to. Gotta break through and the breaking through might not be as pleasant as reading scifi and fantasy, but the process is really straightforward.

The kindle/mobile reading has the benefit that you can tap a word and it will show you the definition. Books can't do this.
But I still prefer books because I like to sit in buses and trains and make people see what I'm reading. Sometimes I'll spent hours considering which cover of a book I should buy.
