Is it normal to feel very sad after finishing a book? I just finished M&D and I liked it so much that I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to read anything else.

How do you overcome this, if it happens to you?

Was Algernon Swinburne the best nineteenth-century poet in English?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yeats, Whitman and Hardy I think have better claim to that.

English as in from England? Or wrote in English?

Browning
Coleridge
Keats
Shelley
Tennyson

Frost
Yeats
Whitman

All better. That isn't to say that swinburne isn't a great poet.

I remember reading about this poet who once woke up from a dream and wrote like 60 verses of a poem, which he said was never able to complete again, or recall where they came from.

Warning this may be in a fictional (Borges?) but for some reason I remember it wasn't. Maybe it's more like a legend.
Who was the author? I can't remember...

Probably this, I think he was on opium/shrooms. The only reason I remember this was my english teacher in high school went on about Kubla Khan and how cool it was and the guy who did it was on drugs.

Can someone recommend a translation of The Epic of Gilgamesh? I've heard something about a new tablet being bought and translated or some such recently from my history professor.

My professor's given us Stephanie Dalley in the Oxford World's Classics' Myths from Mesopotamia. That wouldn't contain the new lines though.
I myself have a Penguin copy. I forget who the translator is, but it's thicker than their other Gilgamesh option, and has a Babylonian dragon as the cover art. This version features all the Gilgamesh texts- not only the Standard Version, but also the Old Babylonian and Hittite fragments, as well as the Sumerian poems. I'd get that one honestly. It wouldn't have the new lines though of course.

>Shakespeare's weakness lies in his complete deficiency in that highest sphere of thought, in which poetry embraces religion, philosophy, morality (...) his characters have no religion, no politics, no conscience, no hope, no convictions of any sort (...) there is no leading thought or inspiration for which any man could conceivably risk the spoiling of his hat in a shower, much less his life.

george bernard shaw quote, hm

awfully dumb thing to say, its so obviously wrong, anyone who's read even one play by shakespeare could refute all of it. sage.

He includes all of these topics, just not blunt and clearly visible. Fags like you who can't read between the lines to find hidden meanings will never see it. Go back to reading Magic Tree House.

/tv/ doesn´t respond

>>The spectator must need no thoughts of his own: the product prescribes each reaction, not through any actual coherence-which collapses once exposed to thought-but through signals. Any logical connection presupposing mental capacity is scrupulously avoided. Developments are to emerge from the directly preceding situation, not from the idea of the whole. There is no plot which could withstand the screenwriters' eagerness to extract the maximum effect from the individual scene. Finally, even the schematic formula seems dangerous, since it provides some coherence of meaning, however meager, when only meaninglessness is aaceptable. Often the plot is willfully denied the development called for by characters and theme under the old schema. Instead, the next step is determined by what the writers take to be their most effective idea. Obtusely ingenious surprises disrupt the plot. The product's tendency to fall back perniciously on the pure nonsense which, as buffoonery and clowning, was a legitimate parr of popular art up to Chaplin and the Marx brothers, emerges moststrikingly in the less sophisticated genres. Whereas the films of Greer Garson and Bette Davis can still derive someclaim to a coherent plot from the unity of the socio-psychological case represented, the tendency to subvert meaning has taken over completely in the text of novelty songs, suspense films, and canoons. The idea itself, like objects in comic and horror films, is massacred and mutilated

It's completely natural and conveys Tolkien's intention as good if not better as the original version. It's really not much different for it.

and this was published like 9 years after infinite jest

the meme trilogy books were written decades apart
