I've read analyses of the Dubliners' short story A Painful Case, in which Mr. Duffy's reason to get away from Mrs. Sinico is said to be the fact that she represents a threat to his very orderly and rigid life; but I think a bigger reason is the fact that Mr. Duffy considers himself to be above people and everything he sees as mundane, Mrs. Sinico qualifying when she misinterprets his words on loneliness.
I think this paragraph illustrates Mr. Duffy's rejection of the mundane:

'She asked him why did he not write out his thoughts. For what, he asked her, with careful scorn. To compete with phrasemongers, incapable of thinking consecutively for sixty seconds? To submit himself to the criticisms of an obtuse middle class which entrusted its morality to policemen and its fine arts to impresarios?'

What do you think?

That was an excuse for his paralysis, I think.
>>
Agreed, he thinks himself above everybody else, and strangely this results in him being lonely and generally worse off or below everybody else. Look at his disgust when he learns of how she dies

I'm writing a urban fantasy novel and I am divided between two characters to be my protagonist:

>(1) the first is police officer who lost his / her family in an accident related to the paranormal when he / she was young, therefore dedicating his / her life to it in search of revenge.

>(2) the second one is a normal person who needs money to save a loved one. He / she gets in the world of the paranormal in search of the means to save that loved one.

(2) is more relatable and perfect for a fantasy novel because the reader can easily put herself in the shoes of the protagonist as he / she learns about the world of the paranormal. But (1) has a more interesting backstory, sincerely.

Make the protagonist a female, and somehow indicate that she was a refugee at one point in her life.

That'll get you published in no time, my dude.

I felt that way for years. Unlike you, however, my feelings weren't as pure. I'm not as pure... I tried to rationalize my feelings as if the world was really evil. I couldn't see that it was just a meaningless feeling—it had to be real. Like the rest of my generation, the only things I was interested in were nostalgia and sex. I was burning with lust, burning with hatred... obsessed with the women that I could never have, obsessed with the past that I could never inhabit... I burned all day and night. I felt sick, like I was full of demons, like I was condemned, freezing and burning at the same time, like the lowest spirits who writhe on the bedrock floor of the blackest depths of avici...

I'm writing a short story that I'm considering publishing some time after I finish it. I have no college education though so I'm not sure if my grammar and stuff is 100% correct, I just do a lot of reading. I'll just post the first paragraph for now. Lemme know what you guys think?

In the time close to my passing I'm reminded of things I least expected to take my conscious. I think not of regrets or mistakes, happiness eludes me, and I am without sadness. What has taken my mind leaves me stricken with fear and a horrible curiosity for the unknown. Memories of them always hiding away, watching over me, laughing in beastly tongues, and speaking without form. They've been there since I was young. I was less aware of them then since my understanding of reality was malleable and my wits weren't about me but they were there.
>>
You aren't ready to be published. Maybe you meant to post more, but this is just full of errors and pretentious as all hell.
>>
>>8762734
Can you point out the errors for me? It's just the first paragraph here.

What is truly, unironically the best book you've ever read written by a woman? I think for me it's Song of Solomon.

Please no flustered virginposting.

I unironically liked Jane Eyre a lot. I should probably get around to reading Wuthering Heights at some point.

I'm also wondering if Lou Salomé wrote anything worth reading, considering Neech had such a hard-on for her.

Persuasion. Jane Austen.

so many good/fantastic books written by women to choose from, and you decide to pick one of the worst book sever written, either by a man or a woman.

My only hobbies are reading and writing but if I tell people I read it's the same as saying I have none, and if I tell people I write they ask for a sample (to which I refuse to comply because my writing is scattered, personal, and above all else: shit).

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Well, if you tell someone your hobby is video games, it's also the same as saying you have none.

It's not particular to reading.
>>
>>8762218
I suppose. All my friends find me interesting and enjoyable (or so it seems), but when I'm with people I'm only familiar with I feel like a stick in the mud.

Being seen on the same level as someone who only plays video games kinda stings though.
>>
>>8762228
Reading isn't a hobby, it's an interest. A hobby is actively working towards some goal that requires your unique vision or contribution. You can make reading into a hobby by getting more specific but, yeah, you will come off as lame unless you are working towards something.

Last thread died without any replies, so...

I'm looking for an online bookseller - that's not Amazon or B&N - who carries a good selection of hard bound books. My town has shit for bookstores thanks to the big chains, and the chains only carry new stuff. Anything older than six months is in paperback.

Any suggestions or recommendations? For example, I'd love to find a copy of Silence in hard bound that doesn't cost 300.00.

What are some of your favorite books with some sort of gimmick, in the realms of Tree of Codes, JJ Abrams' and Doug Dorst's S, and the works of Mark Z. Danielewski?

I thoroughly enjoy the books-within-books idea as well that many of these gimmick-y books implement (but the thread is not limited to just that).

HoL is not gimmicky. Its presentation is essential to its structure, theme, and plot. It's not just a quirky, whimsical element.
