Why this fat fuck relevant?

He can't write a plot that doesn't divulge into petty cynicism made out of half baked purple prose paragraphs whose excuse is modernity. Neither he is funny, rather more snarky through characters who resemble his own lazy and gluttonous mode of living, unsurprisingly always peering at people from above. Just imagine being alive for all these years, reading and writing as your profession, only to give out a handful of good pages. He's a hack and not even worth of the juvenile affection from impressionable and overreacting hipsters on here.

I don't think everything of his is amazing but I've read every piece of fiction prose he's written. For a quick Gassy handjob you should try the short stories: "Order of Insects" from In the Heart of the Heart of the Country which is 4 pages long and then "Emma Enters a Sentence of Elizabeth Bishop's" which is 40 something pages long but is so good it only felt like 20 to me.

I'm also waiting for that guy who asked for my feet pics to post his Gass rankings like they promised.

the biggest spooks of them all -
1. people don't act in self-interest.
2. self-interest is good or evil.

Are you saying this is a "spook" and people do act in self interest? Or the reverse?
Either way, that's not a spook. Read Stirner.
>>
>>8756354
the former. they do even if they don't know it themselves, the mentally ill are the exceptions hence the mental illness.
you're asking me to read stirner when you clearly haven't? that's the entire point of the book.

Any WG Sebald fans out there? Rings of Saturn or Austerlitz? I need a book to read next.

>>
Rings of Saturn is better, but it's worth reading everything he wrote.
>>
>>8756083
I thought Austerlitz was quite a good book, even with the Holocaust tie-ins it was more about the alienation of a brilliant mind by being an orphan then your typical appeal to sympathy Schindler's List style.
>>
I'll be reading Rings of Saturn in about a week for my postmodern European lit class. I'm excited for it.

What are some names and words that you often here people mispronounce, and immediately write them off as being pleb? (usually actually I think they are mostly self taught and have never heard an instructor say the word)

I just started Don Quixote and was laughing uncontrollably at the inn scene where he defends his armour from the men trying to water their mules. I'm in for quite a ride aren't I?

Do people actually think this book is funny?
>>
>>8756102

Since we're talking about books which we were told were funny but disappointed on I'm going with Catch 22 and anything Vonnegut wrote, I found some of their ideas interesting but they never really made me laugh.

Hi guys, so help a dude out, what books hit the subject of the world wars through the existentialist's eyes?

Then this post doesn't equate to shit. Just because you searched Stephen King doesn't mean anything. That user could've literally been replying to someone else and saying Stephen King is shit.

Damn, you're retarded.

Plus, I'm willing to bet a 2 day old thread, if popular, probably has about over 200 comments and you picked Stephen King of all things to gripe about. Shut your bitch ass up.

Which version of King Lear should I read? Quarto, Folio, or the combined one?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>

Shakespeare's
>>
>>8755892
Modern if you're reading for school since everyone use it, quarto otherwise since it represents initial vision. Folio was most probably modified based on initial public reaction, plus some actor changes. While modern is just a mishmash thrown together by some editor.
>>
>>8756097
>by some editor
>not knowing who Foakes is

I recommend the combined one, since it is an interesting take on the play and Foakes (if by th combined one you mean the Arden edition) does an excellent job as an editor.

There is a pdf in libgen with a parallel text of King Lear, with the Quarto in one side and the Folio in other. You might want to check that.

Has anyone on /lit/ read this book?

Do monomyths make sense?
34 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
No

But I'm guessing the idea of the monomyth is derived from comparing hero stories and finding similar elements that cross them and ignoring when some stories lack those elements

However I'm not sure I entirely agree since from what I know about mythological studies only a few ancient cultures are classified as actually having a heroic age and thus a massive wealth of heroes to draw on- most others only have a few heroes- such as Sumeria having Gilgamesh. The majority of these cultures are also Indo-European in origin, so being able to compare the similarities of Cuchulainn and Hercules and Beowulf and see that they have a lot of elements in common isn't really surprising.

Other ancient cultures like Egypt aren't really big on the "mortal goes around doing tons of heroic shit" type of myth but instead have a much stronger religious culture centered around their gods. I'm just speculating but this might be because it didn't really serve the purposes of the god-kings of Egypt to have random half-gods in myth running around doing stuff, since that would undermine the divinity of the pharoah.
>>
Yeah it's an interesting theory and a good read. Best to take it with a pinch of salt, as anyone's ideas though.
>>

Does anyone else only read in order to not seem like a pleb when they talk to people (or in case they ever talk to people; or for the unjustified superiority complex over normies)?

That's me. I see literature as entertainment that has gone out of fashion which means that while it slides in to complete irrelevance it is used as middle class and above social signalling ammunition. I literally don't give a fuck about some academia-media-publishing industrial complex chosen Oxbridge / HYP educated rich person has to say in their narcissistic and barely disguised memoirs. I'm not going to pretend that their stupid and boring pomo novels are enjoyable or have any philosophical merit (LOL) whatsoever.

I plan to just read old books and tell people I don't read that much. So whenever books get mentioned, and almost only famous old books will be mentioned, I will be able to truthfully claim to have read them. I will seem modest about how well read I am but I am really doing it in the most efficient manner.

Also non fiction, unless it is enjoyable, is a bad joke in today's information age. And that's just in general. In particular, stupid border disputes (I.e., Napoleon, Alexander the great etc.) seems like petty and trivial nonsenses. Reading Plato try to figure out objective morality (inb4 "But he dusnt doo dis!!1") is a bad joke. I can barely care about the Romans when I can watch the Americans today.

I read because I find it enjoyable. Plus I learn new things not normally taught in schools and shit.

Also, it's kinda fun to look down on normies that only read popular YA books, and say that they read a lot. :)
>>
I know enough to not seem like a pleb anyway, I don't read because books are expensive

Since over the last few years, /pol/ has obnoxiously infected /lit/ to the point where actual discussion is impossible, and since it seems like they're never going to leave us alone, is there another chan with better /lit/ discussion going on? just hide the threads you dislike. there are a few places to discuss books online but they all have some sort of deficiency. This one is by far the most fun in my opinion though. Honestly I don't even know what people want out of this board, half assed and awkward interpretations of text isn't the most appealing thing in the world

Make a goodreads and friend all the /lit/ folks. It's not a replacement obviously, but you get more reading done and spend a little less time here.
