"No, that is the great fallacy: the wisdom of old men. They do not grow wise. They grow careful.”

Do you agree with this?

as you get older you get more conservative.
as you grow older you learn more and become more mature.
as young you don't know much and are not very mature

Conclusion:

leftism is for retards
right-wing is for intellectuals

What does /lit/ think of transcendentalism? I'm reading leaves of grass and I don't really get it. I mean sure the language is flowery and all but I don't sympathize with the movement's obsession with nature.

I haven't came across anything incredibly profound in Whitman. He has common thoughts and ideas and expresses them in what many consider to be a lovely way.

In short, it's poetry before philosophy.

Ring wraiths were only royal blood.

Honestly as evil as the guy was made out to be, he didnt seem more evil than your average asshole conqueror. The only times he genocided/sacked was when it was useful.

Who else knows nothing?

But there are two meanings.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
A good friend of mine knew that he hnew nothing. Then he killed himself.
>>
>>8764413
I know nothing. i know so little i dont even know the second meaning to that statement
>>
1) The author suggests that he himself knows nothing, hence the "else."

2) Similarly, the author suggests that he is not aware of anyone else who knows nothing. It may be taken as a sign of loneliness (in wanting to find someone who's reached his conclusions) or arrogance (in believing no one could reach his conclusion).

Hey /lit/, of the big 3 of Sci-Fi, who is your favourite? Favourite books and recommendations by each?
I'd say my favourite of the 3 would be Heinlein, just because of how much I loved Stranger in a Strange Land
Asimov - Foundation Trilogy
Clarke - Childhood's End, The City and the Stars
Heinlein - Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Puppet Masters

I've read it. I'm about to start reading Vineland tomorrow. Just because I enjoy that style doesn't mean I can't enjoy another style?

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said:—Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Is this the greatest poem of all time?

Just finished this and feel kinda confused. What is Hesse trying to say in the novel other than the bourgeoisie lifestyle is stupid, people are inevitably at odds with themselves, and that ridding the ego (through drugs in this case) makes you better in life?

Didn't really understand the mozart stuff at the end of the book either

No idea haven't read it but it sounds like you have a valid thesis. Have more confidence in your deductive abilities.
>>
>>8764223
Thanks for the complement, but I think anyone would get that from reading it. I feel like I'm missing more of his message
>>
>>8764215
I don't think he was suggesting drug use. I don't really understand the book either, but I thought the Mozart, Goethe, "Greats", etc were the main characters idea of people who were really in touch with something real and were able to express it.

The entire time he desperately seeks their approval and I think to achieve their status. He fails in it, or at least believes he is failing at it, maybe by believing there is a way to fail it showed up as his execution in this strange world that is these representations of his mind.

I dunno, my two cents. Was a strange book, I liked it.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I've finally come to the part where I want to read more than I can afford and I can't wait until I'm financilly independent to buy a physical copy of every book I want to read so I'm giving in. Which is the best e-reader and why?
I know nothing about it, the closest thing I've had was a tablet which I only used to read comics and a few novels but became unbearable for me so any suggestion is appreciated, maybe a certain type of e-reader is best for something while another one is best for another thing? Please /lit/ guide me into the digital heaven.

Maybe /g/ is a better place for this but I am feeling helpful today. I have own a Kobo Glo HD, I don't know if it's the best one but it's good enough. It can take SD cards, can read pretty much any format you'll come across, and it has backlight (which is very useful, one of the main reasons I choose to update). Those are some of the things you should look out for. I am sure you can find a website where you can compare different e-readers.

Kindle Paperwhite.

Nothing else.
>>
>>8764267
Kindle doesn't even support ePub. Also, Amazon dicks you over with DRM.
>Nothing else.
>25 cents have been deposited in your PayPal account

Be sure to ignore Kindle shills, OP. Find out what exact e-reader you want by yourself.

Searching for mundane, comfy fiction.
Preferably relatively contemporary in setting.
Think Wallace and Gromit in novel form.
