My only hobbies are reading and writing but if I tell people I read it's the same as saying I have none, and if I tell people I write they ask for a sample (to which I refuse to comply because my writing is scattered, personal, and above all else: shit).
Anyone else in a similar boat?
Well, if you tell someone your hobby is video games, it's also the same as saying you have none.
It's not particular to reading.

I suppose. All my friends find me interesting and enjoyable (or so it seems), but when I'm with people I'm only familiar with I feel like a stick in the mud.
Being seen on the same level as someone who only plays video games kinda stings though.

Reading isn't a hobby, it's an interest. A hobby is actively working towards some goal that requires your unique vision or contribution. You can make reading into a hobby by getting more specific but, yeah, you will come off as lame unless you are working towards something.
