/art/ general?
Anyone know of any decent art survey courses that are up on YouTube or whatever? Or any good general intro art books? I started watching a series on Modern Art (realism to abstract expressionism) and that was p. interesting but I like having sequential, chronological knowledge of things, so I'd really appreciate something that gives me that.
Don't know why I waited this long to get into learning about fine art. It's fascinating.
whats the point
Here is a point, hope it helps.

save me /lit/ . I have begun to feel an unholy spite against mankind again. I learned to love our fellow men even if when they were wicked and evil but I once again find myself wishing for god to send another flood to kill us all after certain events happened today. What are some passages or short stories I can read that'll calm me down put me back on the righteous path.....

This world is hell and has always been hell. It's our job to acknowledge that and try to bring goodness into the world to combat all the evil around us, but some days such as today I just get overwhelmed by my hatred for humans.
why are people drawn to extremes?
>>9052301
'Extreme' is just a phrase people use for any deviation from their personal ideal of balance.
For a devout Muslim he is not extremely fundamentalistic for example, he's very reasonable in his practice, while you are extremely degenerate by his standards.
>>9052307
but muslims arent people

Is compatibilism the biggest sham ever? It's basically accepting that free will doesn't actually exist but then pussying out and pretending it does because you don't like the implications.
what does free will mean
>>9052297
I don't know. It's not a concept that makes sense. That's why I don't believe in it.

Any other writers like Thomas Bernhard? Really liked his novels and want more like it.
sebald, krasznahorkai
I think I want to include John Hawkes. Their length and density are similar.
Seblald and Geoff Dyer
How do I write a story with a main character who comes off as unlikeable at first and manage to keep the reader interested in what happens to him?
>>9052138
impossible. make him have a loveable sidekick.
make it so that they come off as unlikeable at first, but then try to keep the reader interested in what happens to him
>>9052142
This. Give him a singing mongoose and a friendly warthog. Write in a few musical numbers for the sidekicks as well. Then sell the script to Disney and rake in the fat stacks of cash.

Do i need to read the Odyssey before Ulysses? Do i need to read the Iliad before the Odyssey?
You need to read both before anything else
You need to be familiar with the story, but they're not mandatory. I think I read once that Joyce actually read a retelling of them by some English author. I'd say being familiar with English (especially Shakespeare and especially Hamlet) and Irish literary traditions. And even so you won't understand a third of the references without help (I'm assuming you're not very well-read if you haven't read the Odyssey). Try reading it on genius.com or joyceproject.org

Do you really believe in "literature canon" of some books, that every reader SHOULD read? I am constantly conflicted between reading some "classic" doorstoper that everyone is shoving down my throat, and reading less popular, but good literature from my country, that i may feel more related to
>>9051863
the meme trilogy should be the standart

Homer, Metamorphoses and the Bible are cannons
Everything else is up to you
The Confucian Anthology is the Eastern Canon
The Bible is the Semitic Canon
Homer is the Ancient Canon
Dante is the European Canon
Only those four, plus Horace. Everything else is up to you.
