Memes was first mentioned by Dawkins in the selfish gene. Memes are to ideas what genes are to life. It was orignally introduced to study the (underected) evolution of culture bits. The term has since then been hijacked by the internet meme, which is a directed and man made virus-idea with the puprose of spreading and reproducing. There are lots of papers on this, I remeber one I read that was pretty good but I can't be bother to find it.
