Hey guys,
Any tips on making a good portfolio? I'm severely lacking in one. I don't mind paying a bit for tools/hosting either.

Even just posting some portfolios you like would help me out!

>>
Step 1: be good at art
Step 2: make a portfolio
>>
>>2249607
By all means, show me your portfolio. I'd like to see where I'm going wrong.
>>
when you mention tools and hosting, i assume you mean more than just the actual art that goes in the portfolio. so i will talk about both.

a good portfolio can be on a website; the website itself should follow the "magazine rule" where the top 50% of the website has all the relevant details - some examples of your art, statement or title of what you do, etc. this is so when people open your page, they immediately see what they need to do, and minimize risk of closing your portfolio prematurely. it should be simple and easy to navigate. also, it should not contain all of your pieces if you have more than 24 pieces; focus on your ability to curate and find your best pieces. maybe you can separate them into different sections if you feel so diversely compelled.

in terms of an actual portfolio, i suppose that depends on your specialties. to get into art school? they will be looking for diversity but also fundamentals - still lives, figure drawing, landscapes, etc. but most of your portfolio should overall be things you are interested in that reflect what you will do in the future. when meeting or interviewing with people in real life you should aim to have some sort of electronic way to view your folio (ipad?) or a nice physical case to hold some of your best works (prints rather than the real thing, probably)

hope this helps

Anyone here draw using tablets or touch displays?
I've had a Wacom Cintiq 13HD for a few years now and it works great. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 10 and now it barely works at all. Even after updating the driver and reinstalling the software, my computer isn't able to pick up both my main screen and the Cintiq at the same time and I'm having a slew of resolution issues with my main screen being scrunched if it's plugged in.

Does anyone else have this problem or know a fix?

I'm using 13HD with Win 10 too, works pretty good overall, but sometimes the it wont regocnise the pen. I just close and open Cintiq again, so it works again.

What computer you have?
>>
My computer was custom built maybe half a year ago using slightly above average parts.

Not exactly sure what type of info you need.
>>
I've seen plenty of people making similar complaints with regards to Windows 10 and Wacom drawing tablets. You might wanna try googling for results there too.

How do I get into looking through the history of art and evaluating some pieces in order to creating an understanding of art to better myself as an artist?

motivation is unreliable, it's too fleeting. nothing is better than a disciplined system, a solid routine and pattern.

i'm ready to jump into art, what's the most efficient means of practice that will give me a solid understanding of art?

what's that supposed to mean. if you actually know what to do, then you can just make a plan yourself.

just draw.
>>
>>2250795
Well it sounds like you don't even know what to do yet, at this point I would suggest looking at different styles and find one that suits your tastes, personalize it, and apply it to what you want to do art is wayyyyyy too broad to say you just want a solid understanding. What do you want to do

Hey, /ic/. Gimme some guidance here. I'm a 20-year-old CS major and I fucking hate it. I'd really rather work in art, and I feel like I'm entering into some self-fulfilling prophecy here by studying CS in case "art doesn't work out". My major is taking up more and more of my time, and I feel like my growth as an artist is stunted because of it. And me putting in the bare minimum towards completing my CS degree probably isn't that great for me either. I'm torn. I see all the blogs and works of artists actually at art school, and they're all so much younger and better than me. It's hard for me to compete, because whereas I have to split my time between art and school, their art is their school. The fuck do I do? I have another 2 years left, and I figure I'll get some bullshit CS job afterwards to pay the bills while I focus on art. But I feel like I'll never be able to compete, that I'll have lost precious time and I'll be met with frustration after frustration with any artistic pursuits. Doomed to slave away at a desk somewhere and always wonder "what if?" in the back of my mind.

Is there anyone out there who went through something similar and could give me some advice?
51 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Youll be bouncing back and forth for a while and thats normal. Your motives behind each path need to be pretty clear tho tbh.
>>
My only advice is do one or the other but choose now.
saying
>oh but I have CS as a backup just in case
will just mean you suck at both.

I do cs for a living, and draw art for a hobby. I doubt I'll ever be a professional artist but I'm good enough to be happy with it.

The great thing about CS is that you can find a 9-5 job meaning you have LOTS of free time and LOTS of extra cash thanks to your high paying CS job.

but if you truly want to do art, you'll have to focus a lot more time on it, so just drop cs and live off art. despite what some people like to claim, if you try hard enough you can always get your foot in the door, even if it means taking a below minimum wage internship.
>>
>>2248102
Thanks, I got that feeling exactly. It's that I find CS particularly hard or anything, it's just I don't get off to the idea of open-source, and I don't spend my Friday nights debugging and jerking off to like, breadth first search. And I feel like I SHOULD if I'm doing CS? But I just feel like I can't just drop out now. I'm 12k in debt currently, so I guess that's not too crippling, but it'd be a major life shift, definitely. I'd almost want to go to art school just to avoid the stigma of being some NEET or some dropout with a minimum wage job living at home. At least I'd be at "college" and "doing something" despite the extra debt I'd be accruing.

Anon doesn't seem to like it when his favorite shitty porn artist gets criticized.

I would like to get good at drawing and eventually(in like 6 years) make a living out of it.

I'm aiming for digital drawing.

Will following the sticky minimize the bad habits I will learn?

Should I even bother with learning how to draw with a pencil or just get a tablet and learn to draw with it directly?

Thank you very much in advance!

No. Getting a good teacher will.

Can't afford it, not to mention I don't have any good teachers in the area.

I felt like drawing on a tablet after years on paper felt like playing an electric guitar after some practice on an acoustic one.

You are not required to, but that will help.

Dude what? That's what made cghub so fucking great in the first place. That their front page was always displaying work of much higher quality than you'd see on the frontpage of Deviantart, Artstation or CA.org. That's what I always loved about cghub, to just f5 the front page and find amazing new artists who I've never heard of before without having to wade through an ocean of shit to find them. Especially chinese artists who usually only post on their weird blogs.

I have a surface and I've never found it all that useful for art. In situations where I want to draw in places that aren't my PC I almost never want to do elaborate digital paintings so it's easier to just carry around pencils and a pad.

It's a lovely device but I've never found an artistic use for portable tablets.
>>

the /g/ threads are moving too rapidly and don't really accommodate art related discussion. We've had Cintiq and iPad Pencil threads, so why not have a comfy Surface thread

I recommend Kakukaku Shikajika to everyone struggling with finding motivation for drawing. It's a short nonfiction manga about how Akiko Hayashi (pic related) became a successful mangaka.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

What is it about the 80's anime aesthetic that makes it so appealing?
213 posts and 43 images submitted.

Fuck off, /m/
>>

It was designed for young adults that were more mature during the time that it aired. Now a days it's more about appealing to teenager's and a generation of people that never want to grow up.that's why all the grit was taken out of it, for maximum escapism.

Hey guys, can I have some tips?
My Intous 5 stopped working a while ago, and I was thinking about replacing it with a Cintiq, Now, is the 22HD version worth it compared to the 13HD version? It's obviously better regarding everything but I'm afraid it will be painful to move around and it costs twice as much as the 13" one.
Then there's the chinese alternative, the
Huion GT-185HD, almost as big as the 22HD and seems too good to pass up, but well, it's chinese.
I'm not making any money drawing, and I don't want to in the first place, it's just my favorite hobby.
Thanks to everyone that will answer

I have the Cintiq 13HD; works great.
Cant say anything about 22Hd
Would just stay with Wacom rather than going to some other maybe not so reliable ones.

You say your doing it as a hobby, so id say get the 13hd, cuz it'll surely be quality stuff and its not so exspensive as the 22hd. Sure if you have money and willingness go for the 22hd.
>>
>>2245059
I had 13hd, it was terrible. drivers not detecting pen pressure and awkward hand position, coupled with having to wear sweaty glove.
>>
>>2245062
Hand position and gloves are your own fault and choice.
As for drivers mine work perfectly.
