Rome vs China circa 0 CE/AD

Imagine if they are both on the outskirts of their Empire and the border between the two are connected (no Persia/Mid east) Therefore logistics of travelling across the desert/across persia is no long an issue.

Logistics of going across the desert is no longer an issue, but you still need to supply the troops across the border.

This is X | Y scenario rather than X | ........................................ | Y scenario

Why did Arabs fail in every war with Israel? Bad overall strategy? Inferior weaponry? Poorly-trained soldiers? Not enough outside support compared to Israel? All of the above reasons or some combination thereof?

Very in-depth and interesting. In following the Syrian war, I've definitely noticed the trends (obsession with pride, lack of lateral communication, lack of combined forces, sectarianism) this article talks about.
This makes me wonder though exactly what has changed in Arab culture since the military successes of the Caliphates.

legitimacy. Its hard to create a strong army in an unstable state that has to constantly police its own populace. Its also hard to put the state before tribal politics if the aforementioned state is just a meme created by foreigners drawing lines n the sand.

What do you think about protestantism?

I think it's conception (the Reformation) cleared the way for the Enlightenment and a lot of important scientific innovation, as well as some interesting philosophy and writing, and is thus a key event in history and advancement of western society.

However, I don't really have any strong opinions on the religious doctrine itself. I'm not religious, so I tend to just lump it in with the rest.
>>
>>2201551
I think it was a poorly handled mistake that spiraled into decades of brutal warfare and centuries of animosity which last to this day.

The Council of Trent was what the reformation should have been: An emphases on anti corruption while maintaining the theological integrity of Western Christianity.

What could Europe actually have done to stop a full-on Mongol invasion?

For that matter, how does a primarily infantry based army defeat an army mostly composed of ranged cavalry? This is something I am deeply interested in as there doesn't seem to be an answer to the aforementioned problem.

Time

Thats how they defeated the mongols. Time gave them the advantage they needed. Mongols power divided, Europe had half a century's time to build up defenses/alliances/restructure their governance/etc.

>What could Europe actually do
Not much. Mongols were utilizing OODA loop within enemy territory. Subutai had already planned, had spies reporting on the European powers for months/years at time. So if they really wanted to, they can scale up the invasion and europe wouldn't even know what hit them.

Why did Russia force the other Soviet states to stop sending aid to Israel and create Islamic terrorism to try and destroy the country, when Israel's government was primarily comprised of Russian communists up until the very late 70s?

They already had a sphere of influence in the Arab world as a bulwark against turkey, and the Arabs had an extreme dislike for Israel. Stoking that rivalry ensured a higher demand for soviet military equipment.

>American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles refused to concede that there was such a position as neutralism. To him, countries had to be either for the United States or for the Soviet Union, for capitalism or for socialism. For Dulles and the oil companies he had represented as a corporate lawyer, the Middle East was a giant pool of oil to be guarded for U.S. corporations.
>To Eisenhower, the Arabs offered assets — the Arab states were useful for ‘containment’ — while Israel constituted a liability to American interests.”

>US afraid of success of USSR in Eastern Europe and Israel
>US trying to wedge itself in between USSR and Israel

>US Middle East Peace Initiative was explicit. Israel should be integrated into the region, and Israel should not see itself as “alien” to it, and its Arab reality.
>The US open goals for Israel to accept an end to Zionism.
>1950-1953 Gurion gets solicitations from west to break loyalty with USSR
>US foreign policy objectives in the Middle East opposed to Israel, and skillfully removed from USSR-sphere

>1950-53 end of USSR-Israeli friendship, US successfully takes Gurion
