How do you download stuff off MEGA? When I click "download as zip" it creates some transfer thing, which seems to finish downloading (on the site) and then I can't do anything with it. There didn't seem to be any way to actually get it on my PC.

Nothing on my desktop, or in my downloads folder, or seemingly anywhere for that matter. Maybe it did download after all and it's in some god forsaken place I'd never look. I'm on linux and firefox so I have no idea if MEGA even supports it.
>>
>>2135015
When the download finished, did it prompt you with a popup to "activate download"? If not, try it again and click on it. Should save to your default download path.

I think it tried to put it on my desktop - it says it's been downloaded, but when I go to open containing folder (the desktop), it's just not there. Probably means my linux can't handle some aspect of MEGA's download process, so I'll just switch to Windows. Thanks anyway

>Library of Alexandria

Can I pass a motion to have the threads from here on called 'House of Wisdom'?

I only feel it more appropriate to the content when we know that the Library of Alexandria's content was more trivial and banal with records on farmers crop growth or trade records whereas the House of Wisdom's was more focused on the scientific, philosophical, and technological interests and knowledge of the day.
>>
>>2135225
>House of Wisdom
Cringy as fuck.

"Library of Alexandria" is cool and /his/ related.
>>
>>2135251
Well, they're both /his/ related. The House of Wisdom was the name of Baghdad's great library. Alexandria is still more Western-related, though.
>>
>>2135225
Do as you like, I only called it that when I made this thread cause that's what other people were calling it. As long as people share stuff is all that matters to me.

The Real Roosevelts is very promising. Especially since it's recent so it got to review that awful Ken Burns documentary.

The rest is a mixed bag. There's a lot of material to get through so it's hard to say which books are stormfront-originated political treaties and theories and which are simply valid academic works on white or European identity or occidentalism. Not Ouf of Africa for example seems like the former but it's actually the latter. There are also some realisitic books about communism and other leftist ideas.
>>
>>2135664
I haven't even been through them yet, desu. All I know is that it's a big ass assortment of political and historical works.
>>
>>2135673
I gave Real Roosevelts a read and it's written like a youtube post from a /pol/ster. The content may be right for the most part but I'd rather die than be caught citing it as a source.

Do we have to rely on ebook sites for digital copies or are there ways to get the access to more books? I heard that all books written after 1999 (or so) need to exist in digital version. For anti-plagarist reasons perhaps? If someone here gained the access to more books that can't be found on standard ebook websites we could make requests and such. Bottomless pitt of literature. Or something like that. I don't necessarily mean that it has to be every book. But some people have premium accounts or have the VPN connection to university libraries (I had it once too). Perhaps this could help.
>>
>>2134801
The occult library is in twice.
>>
>>2135795
The Mega could definitely use some curating and reorganization, separating primary sources from secondary, separating those between research publications and pop-history books, formatting titles, and maybe a pastebin to give a general overview for newbies so they don't get overwhelmed trying to download everything and reading a few pages to decide if they're into the subject.
>>
>>2134801
I've got about 300+ pdfs of history books and academic journal articles that I'm about half way through organizing. Maybe I should put them up in a mega and free up some space.

I bought a ten inch one for around £100 but when this breaks ill probably buy one around 7-8 as 10 gets a bit heavy on longer reading sessions.

Is this thread the book recommendation station? I'm really interested in the collapse of the Bronze Age and was wondering if any of you beautiful people had a good book or two on it.

Drews, Robert. The End of the Bronze Age: Changes in Warfare and the Catastrophe ca. 1200 B.C. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1993.
>A scholarly yet readable study about the period of transition between the Bronze and Iron ages. After surveying the process of the collapse and the many different explanations given for it, Drews concludes that it was changes in the technology of warfare that allowed the “barbarians” to overcome their traditional masters.

>>
Is occultism worth reading or is it just a waste of time?
>>
>>2142360
Define your terms:
"Occult", "worth", and "waste of time".

There's plenty of history and anthropology of religion as opposed to source texts. If this is valuable to you, then you want to read it. If not, pass.
>>
>>2142393
Yes, after some thinking and reading your post, I now want to learn about it. Which books do I start with? I've read about the Golden Dawn, Ordo templis orientis, Israel regardie, Aleister Crowley and many other Occultists on wikipedia.
>>
>>2142360

Depends, do you want to bend reality to suit your needs or do you wanna keep being a fuckin pleb? You decide.
>>
>>2142684
What are you interested in of those?
Israel Regardie's "Complete Golden Dawn" is the standard, if deviant from the core rites by way of Stella Matutina.

I've got Francis King's "Secret Rituals" and Koenig's "OTO Rituals and Sex Magick".

If you're into Crowley I present the vast majority of the Yorke Microfilms of the Warburg Collection (unpublished notes, diaries, commentaries, manuscripts, typescripts, etc.).

If you want the basics of philosophy and mechanics, Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice is great. If you want something less practical and more poetic, The Book of Lies. If you want 'babby's first Neoplatonic Hermetica', The Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster lay the foundations of much of the GD/Thelemic approach to both systems (Chaldean Oracles is neither Chaldean nor Zoroastrian, but is a nice recompilation of the old Hermetic and Neoplatonic materials, stripped down and re-packaged as coherent doctrines out of meandering texts).
>>
>>2142737
I will start with Complete Golden Dawn. Just downloaded the pdfs from Ape of Thoths Library. I want to learn about mysticism and kabbalah
>>
>>2142813
If you want to learn about KABBALAH as in the Jewish mysticism, the GD isn't the best place. Too synchretized with Hermetics.

David Chaim Smith does great work on Kabbalah; Kabbalistic Mirror of Genesis. Awakening Ground. The Blazing Dew of Stars (advanced af tho). Kaplan's also nice, particularly "Inner Space", "Jewish Meditation", and his translation of Sefer Yetizrah.
>>
>>2142822
Thanks for the help. Considering jewish mysticism is connected to judaism, is learning hebrew neccesary?
>>
>>2142916
Um, depends.

For entry level stuff you're not going to need to recite the Tanakh by heart or some shit like that. You don't need total fluency.

Get a good concordance (Strong's) and then use the gematria calculators at numberman.net and http://www.billheidrick.com/works/hgemat.htm and you should pick up enough words to sorta be able to navigate around.

You don't need to be fluent but you WILL need to apply yourself towards linguistic study.
>>
>>2142937
This will take a long time to learn. It's late for me now, so I will start tommorow. Thanks for all the help.
>>
>>2142977
Any serious study of a subject will take a long time to learn.

I've been at this for like 16ish years or more. I'm only now scratching below the surface of certain mysteries.
>>

You'd need more than knowing the concept of steam though. You'd need improved metallurgy and economical reasons to actually build trains and stuff.
Romans had slaves, and most of their trade was done by see, on ships manned by slave rowers (I think. I'm just assuming this. Correct me if I'm wrong.)
This was probably cheaper than laying down the tracks and making metal behemoths, if they could have been made at all.

Carroll, Maureen. 2001. Romans, Celts & Germans: The German provinces of Rome. Stroud, UK: Tempus.
>Brief assessment of change and continuity in the Germaniae. Demonstrates different valuations of urbanism on the part of different groups such as the Batavi and Ubii. Includes a case study of Cologne.

Carroll, Maureen. Romans, Celts and Germans: The German Provinces of Gaul. Stroud, UK: Tempus, 2001.
>Succinct and thematic English-language overview of the archaeology of Germania Superior and Germania Inferior (encompassing parts of modern-day Germany, Switzerland, Holland, France, and Belgium); there is a particular interest in process of “Romanization”—both in towns and in the countryside. Art-historical analysis is integrated with a cultural historical approach (note, though, the relative paucity of images: fifty-nine integrated black-and-white pictures, and sixteen color plates).
i think this is the same as the one above

Thanks for this, but not quite what I'm looking for. Was hoping anybody had read some material on the subject already and could recommend me said material so I know I'm not reading meme history. Like a compilation book of the history, not a scholarly journal or anything like that.

Thanks though.

Can anyone suggest book about prenapoleonic habsburg domains that will become austrian empire, preferably after hungarian union.
And if it is possible essay that deals with russian society from around napoleonic times to emancipation of serfs (or at least pinpoint me through "Russia’s Age of Serfdom, 1649-1861")

> Like a compilation book of the history, not a scholarly journal or anything like that.
the last three things i recommend are kinda useless, so sorry for that. but if you look in the first link it's not a scholarly journal but a list of books with descriptions of their contents (i.e. an annotated bibliography). Also, why would I recommend meme history? These bibliographies are made by scholars in their fields of expertise so their descriptions, though brief, probably rival what most anons on this board with regards to quality historical scholarship. now to paste direction from 1st link:

Chadwick, Nora. The Celts. 2d ed. London: Penguin, 1997.
>Drawing upon her extensive knowledge of archaeological and linguistic studies of the origins of Celtic civilization in Ireland, Britain, and Brittany, Chadwick has written a very useful introduction to the religious, artistic, and literary features of Celtic culture in its earliest phase. It is a work also alert to the myths about Celtic peoples that emerges strongly in 18th-century Europe.
http://bookzz.org/book/2288363/fdd6d8

Collis, John. The Celts: Origins, Myths and Inventions. Stroud, UK: Tempus, 2003.
>Coming from the field of archaeology, Collis contrasts the evidence for Celtic civilization in Britain and Ireland against the ideas of the Celts that emerged in the 16th and later centuries. The work offers an important appraisal of myths and historical evidence for Celtic civilization.

Cunliffe, Barry W. The Ancient Celts. London: Penguin, 1999.
>The most exhaustive account in a single work of pre-Christian Celtic civilization and settlements throughout Europe from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic fringe. Examining patterns of migration, the work is rich in illustrations of major Celtic settlements and artifacts from across Europe. It identifies important distinctions between tribes considered to be the original Celts and those tribes that were later “Celticized.”

Maier, Bernhard. The Celts: A History from Ancient Times to the Present. Translated by Kevin Windle. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2003.
>A highly engaging survey of Celtic civilization that draws on archaeological, historical, literary, and linguistic evidence. It is organized effectively into three sections: ancient Celtic civilization on the European continent (Germany, Iberia, Italy, Asia Minor); the period from the end of the Roman Empire to the late Middle Ages; the gradual assimilation of Celtic into the national cultures of Britain, France, and Ireland.

O’Hógáin, Dáithí. The Celts: A History. Cork, Ireland: Collins, 2002.
>A work of impressive breadth and scholarship concerning the history of Celtic civilization in Europe from 2,500 BCE to the Middle Ages that is particularly useful for its engagement and appraisal of classical Roman sources concerning Celtic civilization, along with comparative linguistic and archaeological studies of modern times

theres also a celtic dictionary and encyclopedia listed

I think you'll find the second volume of the Cambridge History of Russia useful. It's can be read cover to cover but they're intended as reference work whose parts that can be consulted discretely. Each chapter is like a very good introductory essay on any topic you wish. I recommend you read the fantastic introduction, though, to help yourself centered in the period.

what? hungarian union with austria came after the napoleonic war in the 1860s. unless you mean union of hungary and croatia or the liberation of hungary from the ottomans?

Apologies, but are there any good resources on economics here? I'm a well-read /biz/nessman, but I'm always looking to gain more knowledge. The only useful thing I see here on economics is the collection of Marxist literature.

Also, I have a collection of videos from the Great Courses'™ course "Latin 101: Learning a Classical Language". I'll make a torrent and share it with /his/ if someone will download and seed it. I unfortunately cannot seed it for very long, so I'd like someone to torrent it as soon as possible.

It's a collection of 36 half-hour long videos teaching the Latin language with an accompanying PDF file. The course is taught by Professor Hans-Friedrich Mueller, who seems very pretentious, but he still knows fluent Latin.

DEAR EVERYONE,

I will soon have completed my organisation of all of these files and will soon upload them into one folder.

I have arranged them all under Calibre (the e-book reader program) and they will all be under one Calibre folder, arranged by each author and then arranged by each book within each author.

This means that all you will need to do is download Calibre and then select my downloaded folder when setting up Calibre and it will automatically arrange everything with Calibre's metadata in each folder, all by author, title, publication date and publisher.

I hope to complete this soon.

WHY THE FUCK ISNT THIS STICKIED YET
>>
>>2134878

If you want a very easy book to read and it might direct you to something you're really interested in Sophie's World is a good start.

Aside from that OUP do short introductions, so the Stoics, Plato, and Aristotle are a good start.

Sometimes its easier to start with an area, ie, ethics, metaphysics, epistemology or political philosophy etc.

I'm studying for my masters in philosophy currently I would advise you avoid Kant for a while and epistemology (just my personal dislikes haha).

I read your thread there, also I seldom browse this board being a /his/torian too.
My answer would be, it really doesn't make sense to just sticky the whole thread like this, with all the recs and empty bumps and unrelated replies. The only sticky in the last years that resembled this was the /t/ one from 2012, which was explicitly a thread for general cleanup of the questions about technical issues about torrents and magnets.

Look at every other board, recent stickies are usually 3-4 posts at most that contain everything you need in its most compact form.
If you stickied this thread as is, it'd be be hard to have a clear idea of which recs belong with which, as the recommendation pictures and lists are posted with no order over the weeks.

My advice is:
>either make a single external page that covers the whole thing and have the sticky link that, similar to the /lit/, /k/ or /mu/ wikis or the site in /fit/'s sticky, or
>what you should aim for is something that looks like >>>/3/248019 (even if that is quite long because of all the graphics lists) or >>>/trv/609350

tl;dr This thread as is is definitely not sticky material, make a new meta one to decide what belongs, under what order and groupings and then ask mods to sticky a much shorter, organized post.

though its known to be criticized, bertrand russells history of western philosophy is a great read. very accessible and simple enough, which is where it usually gets criticized. enjoy it for what it is but dont take it as gospel and don't think its totally comprehensive. take all the ideas as jumping off points which further reading can refine. its a pretty damn common book too: along with diogenes laertius' lives and opinions of eminent philosophers, russells' history... is the most often cited on philosophers' wiki pages.

Are there any credible/good books on Babylonia, or for that matter ancient Mesopotamia as a whole? Anything like Gilgamesh or just a book that dumps information is fine.

This may be a strange request, but do you or anyone else have some historical atlases? I really need one for the 1500-1800 period. Especially so Europe.

But I'll be happy with just about anything.
