How long did it take until they started calling Alexander "Alexander the Great"? How long does it take for other "Great"s to be titled thus?
Will we ever see another Great? Or has it fallen out.
He took the title after he became the king of Persia. It was an epithet all Persian kings had, even Darius III, kind of like their version of Augustus.

Here you go.
Men die more often than women, especially in war times. Isn't it natural for the more powerful men in society to have more wives/concubines than the commoners?
How have women and men been paired historically? Powerful men have concubines and such, so I guess there just being more women than men historically, or was it that the lowest dregs of the male gender received no wives while the upper levels got more?
>>2211019
>Men die more often than women
No, not really. Death rate for both men and women is in fact 100%.
>especially in war times.
For most of history, women usually died younger than men: Sure, there was the risk of war or workplace accident, but women had death in childbirth to deal with, and women boink out kids far more frequently than there are wars.
>Isn't it natural for the more powerful men in society to have more wives/concubines than the commoners?
The most powerful men usually aren't the ones at great risk of dying in a mining accident or on the front lines.
>How have women and men been paired historically?
Serial monogamy among the upper classes is probably the most common if you want to universalize something as widespread as worldwide history throughout literal millenia, but bear in mind there are numerous enormous exceptions.

Not an argument.
It's just tribalism, heuristics and so on. Not stupid per se, more convenient to blame others for all the world's ills than take responsibility.

Were they really strong or is it just a meme?
You know how the West loves blowing the strength of their (former) enemies out of proportion.
I think it's a joke. The US was like 10x stronger and today it's like 50x. They literally just melted away in just 3 decades after WW2 like butter in a hot pan. And they wouldn't even have won WW2 without the US. And in the 90s they collapsed like a house of cards and their domestic bullshit was far worse than expected, even worse than anyone could have fucking imagined.
No they weren't, the Cold war was just a prank.
>>2210870
I was reading some declassified documents from the 1950s and it is clear that the US government believed that the Soviets had the desire and more importantly the capability to try to achieve complete global domination, and the latter is probably true. SU 1950s-early 1970s could've matched the US, SU in the 1940s/1980s+ probably would have lost due to their economic situation.
>>2210880
>US government believed that the Soviets had the desire and more importantly the capability to try to achieve complete global domination
Yeah but they believe that of everyone. Of Iran, Al Qaeda, Hitler, North Korea etc... it's their job to assume the worst.
I'm not doubting that anyone on this list could cause some serious destruction, and the Soviet Union even more.
But let's look on the constructive site of things. When we're looking at lifestyle, trade relations, influence etc... Does anyone seriously think that the Soviet Union comes even close to the US?
Since 1900 the US was so powerful and dominating, it's not even funny. Just look at the stuff they provided Russia in WW2. It was like 100x the amount Nazi Germany EVER had. The reason the US didn't treat Russia more aggressively is because it's Russia. Everyone loves it. You don't hit children.

Was Ancient Rome/Greece really as great as it is often portrayed?
It seems magnificent and such, but I know much of the world was backwards as fuck back then. Would it be more peaceful living in these two historical places or say Kabul, Afghanistan in the present day?
Pic unrelated
it being backwards as fuck makes the conquest more impressive
no cars, no guns, just marching on foot BTFOing everyone you come across
>>2210696
Ancient Greece was good in some aspects but
a lot of the time suffered from severe economic
malaise (to the point where educated Greeks would actually sell themselves into slavery to the Romans since it was a better life for them) and near-eternal war between supporters of democracy and tyrants, not counting people
trying to invade them or them invading other
people. I mean, it wasn't all bad, but I would
not call Greece "peaceful" by any means.
Rome was a bit better depending on the time period we're talking about, but also suffered its own period of civil wars/unrest. Middle class and upper class Romans probably lived better than Greeks did, and depending on where you lived and what your profession was, lower class Romans probably lived better than most people of the time.
Overall I would say that your average citizen was still far safer in Greece/Rome assuming you didn't involve yourself too much with politics than Kabul.
Romans certainly had practices that would make us regard them as barbarous goat fuckers. I'm not even talking about shit like the mass crucifictions which is obvious, but it was entirely within the rights of a head of a household to commit infanticide against his children or grandchildren.
What is the likelihood of a character like Oscar existing?
I heard Ancien regime France was pretty patriarchal and was wondering the likelihood of a noblewoman gaining the same upbringing and status as her.

What if Gorbachev never came to power and instead the hardliner Grigory Romanov became General Secretary? What would happen to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union without Gorbachev? Could the Soviet Union survive into the 21st century?
Would the Cold War still be going on?
What would such a world look like?
>>2210206
The SU would probably survive, it would enforce control over the satellite states but it's economic situation would be in a dire state.
>>2210318
That's what I was imagining too.
The Soviet Union declining into a gigantic North Korea-tier state with nukes.
What would the rest of the world look like though? Off the top of my head some major changes I imagine are: No 911, no Iraq and Afghanistan wars, no Arab spring, no EU, a more conservative US and Europe, more coups in the third world to remove Hugo Chavez-like leaders.
China is a wildcard.

What did he mean by this?
Why did so many Roman generals commit suicide by falling on their own swords if defeat was imminent? Was it cowardice? Was some kind of unspoken law to prevent becoming a hostage and thus a bargaining chip against Rome? or was some kind of Japanese Hara-kiri jab?
It was actually the exact opposite of cowardice, if you killed yourself you were seen to make up for you failings by doing the honourable thing and as such your family was able to maintain their dignitas.
>>2210045
Me again, it all stems with the Roman obession with what they called dignitas, they had to match the dignitas of their ancestors or preferably match it. So if you caused a massive fuck up the only thing to do was kill yourself to end the shame on the family.
>>2209944
Generally a roman would kill himself if he tought he would have charges laid against him after he came back to the Urbs.
By killing himself, he would spare his family their honour and their wealth, which would have likely got seized if the pater familias got found guilty.
