Studied this guy last semester.
The whole veil of ignorance/original position thing really is brilliant but will never be applicable.
One thing that i find very amusing is that the modern liberals' and democrats' ideologies are basically misintepretations of what he said. I liked him but he came off as too idealistical and far from reality. Definitely not the answer to America's problems

Bear in mind that his argument is essentially: "doesn't this sound like a good idea?"

He appeals to certain values and ideas in attempting to persuade those who use the veil of ignorance. He is not arguing that 'justice as fairness' is in anyway absolutely true or the best possible outcome for a society.

It's a good summarization of the liberal Utopian dream but it is not persuasive to anyone with a conservative political foundation. The guy's a relativist so he's basically just trying to persuade you. Sure if you accept all his a priori bullshit it makes sense but theres no compelling reason to other than "muh feels".

Anglo and especially American culture is anti-intellectual, and always has been. Other parts of "the West" have long traditions of lionising intellectuals and putting their trust in technocratic solutions, the fact that the democratic Anglo "lassie faire" system seems to give better results should give intellectuals some pause.

I don't think it's anti intellectual so much as pro "everyone is entitled to their opinion". Look at places like East Asia where people who drop out of high school are literally ashamed of giving an opinion on something and flat out say they are not qualified to talk about it and defer entirely to experts.
