Alright /his/, is it likely that there were advanced civilizations before Sumeria? And I mean Rome-tier civilizations- maybe even greater. There's so many writings of long lost "golden age" type kingdoms afterall.

I've heard it said that much of the achievements were by Persian-Muslims.. If this is so, then happened to the Iranians then? How did they regress?

do you guys have a recommended reading list? sort of like /lit/?

i can't trust reddit's history list because i trusted their literature list and wasted 2 years reading shit like chuck palahniuk and ready player one. 4chan did the opposite.

so do you guys have any non-pleb tier history books? i don't really know where to look.

The first step to being a scholar is to stop taking advice from websites like reddit and 4chan.

but as far as reading goes, /lit/ has done nothing but progressed me further. was hoping /his/ would do some of that

What are some resources to learn about the Roman Republic and Empire? I feel like reading wikipedia articles isn't going to give me enough depth for such a massive topic. Are there any youtubers who give good material?

I want to do more than lurk here, read books or watch documentaries to learn history. Are there some ways to learn on your own through certain steps or project-based learning?
8 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
1. Come up with discussion questions to ask yourself

2. Come up with essays to write about

3. If you're too lazy to do either of those, take a class at a community college

4. Make youtube videos or articles on a blog where you talk about history, I often find the best way to learn for me is to teach others

5. Have others ask you questions and come up with answers for them, don't just respond but use actual evidence, primary or secondary sources

6. Read essays from historians. Modern history books and essays are far more valuable than reading primary sources like Herodotus to be quite honest.

Does having a large military promote peace or does it just lead to more war? Alternatively, has there ever been a time when a country engaged in a massive military build-up and it did not lead to a war?

>Alternatively, has there ever been a time when a country engaged in a massive military build-up and it did not lead to a war
I mean...the cold war.
>>
>>2421078
I'd say the greatest deterrence factor right now would be nukes.
>has there ever been a time when a country engaged in a massive military build-up and it did not lead to a war?
Soviet Union to the point of [COLLAPSE]
>>
>>2421078
I mean, it depends very much on your definitions of peace. The Romans used a big military to keep the peace, but for them keeping the peace was massacring rebels.

As for the second point, you could argue the entire cold war was a military buildup that left generations of hawks with blue balls.

Could the United States have taken more territory in Latin/Central America? For instance, Ulysses S. Grant annexing Santo Domingo in 1871, or potentially taking colonies in Central America?

Hey guys, I had a quick question. I keep reading and hearing contradictory things with respect to the preservation of Classic works by the Muslims and Christian Monks.

Version 1: The monks did nothing to preserve classic texts; or alternatively they nefariously kept them hidden. The Muslims were the ones who kept them and they reintroduced it to Europe.

Version 2: The monks were bro-tier and were the only ones in Europe who preserved the texts. Its them that deserve the credit.

I'm assuming the truth is somewhere in the middle?

And this is throughout the period of the Middle Ages? Islamic Golden Age was 8-13th centuries. Or am I conflating different things?
>>
>>2420855
Monks preserved some texts and muslims preserved others. We had to take the muslim ones by force.
>>
>>2420855
It was an Arabic thing to translate greek works, usually for stately gain, it was a personal things some monks did.

So there is that. The monks also translated too Latin, a now dead language we really have no idea how it actually works.

>pleb view: 'Christianity held back science during the Middle Ages'
>/his/ wiki historians: 'uhhhh no XD the Middle Ages had no stagnancy and nothing was the churches fault'
>the truth: pretty much all intellectual thought completely came to a halt during this time period, with Aquanus, Augustine, etc. simply applying Platonic metaphysics further into Christian theology, likewise other forms of science completely dropped off the face of the earth due to persecution

>pleb view: 'the civil war was due to slavery'
>/his/ wiki historian: 'NO it was due to states rights and southern culture IDIOT'
>the truth: it was about the South's rights to own slaves and their culture of slavery

How does it feel to be more wrong than plebs /his/?
