Could the United States have taken more territory in Latin/Central America? For instance, Ulysses S. Grant annexing Santo Domingo in 1871, or potentially taking colonies in Central America?
If so, why didn't America seize these opportunities? (inb4 Spanish-American War)

The southern aristocracy wanted to take all of these lands, and would have, had not the civil war and the buildup to it occupied all of their time. Had Lincoln not declared war like everybody expected him not to they planned on annexing the region they called the Golden Circle, spreading their glorious institutions and building an empire for white supremacy around the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
With the government itself stuck trying to negotiate with the increasingly powerful northerners who had finally overtaken the south with the growth of the Midwest and Californian gold, southern citizens often tried to take matters into their own hands. There were many private invasions of central america sponsored by southerners during the 1850's like the expedition of William Walker. They would raise money for these invasions by putting some ads in the paper. None of them ultimately worked out though.

>And would have
I doubt it.
I think it's more likely Mexico would have taken Texas from them.
