Captchas are tech.

What are we doing by entering this text, or "selecting all the images with mountains"? I mean, are we contributing to some AI that is going to take over the world? Is it safe to post on /g/ any longer or am I just accelerating our certain doom?

training google's neural nets. every time it offers you a set of images, it has a few that it KNOWS are correct, a few that is KNOWS are wrong, and a few it doesn't know. when you choose the ones it doesn't know you are making it more accurate for the next run and so on.

Right, so is this a good thing for me? I understand captchas are used for AI now, but is shit posting to /g/ going to be responsible for the downfall of humanity?

So what's stopping someone from writing a program to automatically make all the printers in the area start printing gay porn?

Nothing m8. Do it. Would be awesome. Now that you have initiated the conversation, if you don't do it your a bitch.
>>
>>55841851
I'm not good enough at programming to do it, I'm trying to talk one of you guys into doing it.

I spend a lot of my time thinking of malicious things to do with computers that I'm too lazy to implement

>buy printer that can print stickers
>print out QR codes for goatse, the wikipedia page on anal beads, inspire magazine, or "where to find toddler porn" on the FBI website
>stick the QR code stickers on every poster you see in a public area

>create Facebook game that requires the user to let you post from their account
>advertise it as giving you free PokeGO pokeballs
>when they give it permission it sets off a timer and then randomly posts "Hitler did nothing wrong" from their account some time in the future

I'm spitballing here, you guys got any ideas?
>>
>>55841913
This community is to big to post cool ideas like that. C you at lain Chan. Post there and watch it happen, plus watch the other ideas come in.

Does it make a difference in temperature whether your PC is on the desk or on the floor?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>55841679
Depends on the floor obviously. If you have hard wood probably not. But if you have shag fucking carpet odds are airflow won't be optimal.
>>
if the carpet is short then the stands on most cases would provide the same airflow as on hardwood, but you will accumulate dust and other garbage on your components much faster on the carpet.

i like to put a small wooden board on the carpet where my computer will be.

Ok.

Install arch, not Gentoo. Arch has a really good wiki/install guide and is a lot easier for a first time user as long as you don't mind actually typing things out and looking shit up

Anybody here read ebooks on a tablet or ereader?

Which is better?

eReader
>>
I read them on a tablet.
Works fine.
Better if you like comic books
>>
it really depends. if you're reading books - just text, that sort of thing - then ereaders are really well-suited to it.

if you're reading lots of PDFs - like academic papers and whatnot - then the conversion becomes somewhat gnarly, and color graphics (if/when you encounter any) become really awful.

for my money, i went with an ereader sized tablet. some people complain that you can get too easily distracted by netflix and whatnot with it, but you can also just not install that shit. it's crippling your device somewhat by not really using a tablet for all its potential, but your reading experience will generally be better than on an ereader (again, assuming you're looking at stuff where layout was already determined (e.g. 2 columns, figures in specific places, anything involving latex really) and color/animated stuff.

You just built a new computer!!

What programs or apps as I like to call them do you install on your new computer after booting it up for the first time?

For the sake of argument you are for all eternity stuck with Windows 10.

slackware is GNU/Linux for windows users.

think about it:
- you have to install every program, besides the most basic ones, from some homepage after you downloaded it individually
- installing things takes time and often will break your system
- upgrading to new versions successfully relies on 99% sheer luck
- slackware had its naming scheme altered by skipping from slackware 4 to slackware 7. like windows did multiple times as well, changing from version to year-based release names to simple names to version names again.
- slackware still retains the same basic functions without any real innovation like windows does since 1.0. all they add is some more blingbling in the DE.
- slackware users are uncaring, egoistic children that think they are being clever for using a cumbersome operating system for a mundane reason. in windows, that is "GAEMS!!!!", in slackware "NO DEPENDENCY MANAGEMENT MEANS FREEDOM!!!"
- they both have their own operating system cult leaders. bill gates vs that volkerding guy
- slackware and windows both dont care about support for architectures other than x86. only lately, after lots of nagging and threats, they have released a half-assed 64-bit version that breaks constantly. ARM, PPC, they all will never see any slackware or windows on them.

SLACKWARE = GNU/WINDOWS

So I'm shopping for parts to build a new PC for my husband on NewEgg and TigerDirect (Do people still use these?) and it's way way pricier to make a basic gaming/utility rig than I recall it being like 8 years ago.

Where do you guys shop for parts these days? Is it still a viable choice to buy a pre-assembled dell or whatever and then slap a graphics card in it, or am I wasting my money that way too?
