Hello /g/,
I'm an economics undergraduate and I want to get into a career in software product management. I was wondering if you could give me advice on how I could get started learning basic computer science and sofware engineering concepts (e.g. data structures, algorithms, concurrency) and web development by myself. The company I am applying for an internship at lists Grails, Scala, Java, PHP, C#, and mySQL as some programming languages and technologies that their entry-level software engineers must be familiar with. Are there any particular textbooks or online courses that you would recommend? Is there any order that I should be learning these things? I have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS and I can assemble a computer but that's about it. I want to be able to speak to developers and understand how things are built so that I could give input on how things should be designed and prioritized.
I have two weeks absolutely free this Christmas break and I plan on spending the entire time building a foundation. Obviously, I know that I won't be asked to code during my interview but I want to be able to engage the interviewer in a smart discussion about their app so this means understanding the technologies that it's built with in addition to business side of things. I plan to continue learning long after that so don't worry and think that I believe I could grasp things in such a short time frame.
Maybe the developers among you could also share some insights on what you would like to see from good product managers.
Thank you and I appreciate any help that you might be able to share.

>asking anonymous on how to start your career
fuckoff, there are actual proffesionals for this shit
>>57908858
Go with the Ook language, you might develop empathy for devs trying to get what product managers say.
>econ major
>product management
Have you thought about killing yourself?
>When you fall for the ssd meme
>rusty disk sags will never get to experience 5 sec boot time
>When you realize all the time you save with an ssd from rebooting your computer 100s of times a day
>>57908791
>not realizing the time people waste by shutting off their pc
>not having near instantaneous boot times by putting your computer to sleep
ram beats ssds, everytime.
>>57908834
or just get a 950 pro lol
Do you leave your computer on at all times or do you shut down after use?
It's only off when I'm using it.
Shut it the fuck down. I pay my own electrical bill.
I keep my laptop plugged in all the down.
Has anyone used one of these before? I have an X230 and a 480 and 1060 GPU.
>>57908604
It's a pci express 1x...so that means it will be kinda slow.
I'm going to give you a hint: I tried doing this with one of my laptops - only to find out that, if your laptop has more than 4GB of ram and is running Windows, the graphics card won't function without some extensive registry modification.
Try reading about it.
If you're using linux, you're good to go.

I was thinking of replacing my Linux distro that I currently have with something else because I'm pretty new to Linux and want to try stuff out and see what works. My preferences (but I can go without these):
>KDE
>Not Ubuntu/Debian based
Was thinking of installing the one in pic related. Is it any good, for those who use it?
>inb4 install gentoo
only other option is OpenSUSE, everything else will be a shit spin
Install gentoo.
>>57908536
>I can go without these

>>57908436

Let's talk about the important issues: What distro has the best color scheme?
Pic unrelated
>>57908272
Pic most certainly unrelated.
>>57908272
Blue is the best color for OS
>>57910246
But why is xfce a mouse?
Also i like the open-suse color scheme.
I have a bit of a dilemma. Lately I've noticed my games are starting to really slow down my current CPU, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T. PC is currently setup with an AMD motherboard, Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3.
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3753#ov
I've been doing some research and I know that the Intel is the better CPU, but also found out I would need to change out a few pieces just to convert over to an Intel. I found an AMD that looks like it could actually work with my pc, and would be more in my budget.

Main question for /v is, should I try to upgrade my current CPU with the one I mentioned, or just hold off and possibly upgrade to an new Intel PC when I have the cash?
>>57908270
buy a fan and overclock that bitch. Thats what AMDs are for
>>57908689
>buy a fan and overclock that bitch. Thats what AMDs are for
see, answers like this could lead OP to frying his mobo/cpu, which in turn could lead to him being around burning plastic and other health hazards.

The Vishera AM3+ CPU that you linked is not actually supported by your AM3 chipset, even though it might physically fit in the socket.

Check out this compatibility sheet.
How long before I can get a 5tb SSD for less than $500?
Just a guess; three years.

What is it that actually makes Chrome run faster? I really prefer Firefox for the add-ons and slight increased customizability, but its performance doesn't seem to match Chrome. What can I do to remedy this?
>>57908221
Just install gentoo
>>57908221
Get Pale Moon and install your addons there.
>>57908221
The botnet is built in so it runs faster xDDD
