Where should I start with programming? A lot of people suggest java or python to begin, but just as many say thats a terrible place. What did you start with, /g/uys?
>>58310028
Frankly, I think at the moment there is no silver bullet to starting programming.
Every book and course you access will be specific to a language, which unintentionally ties you down to one language.
It's preferred that you learn to program in generic psuedocode and then attempt to reimplement data structure and programming examples in multiple languages.
They don't have to be different paradigms, but if you were to just program in C++, C#, Java and Python that would be more than sufficient to give you an understanding of how similar and different languages can be.
Then you read a book like Programming Language Pragmatics and learn the hows and why of language design.
>>58310028
Lisp or C both are good languages

If it's not for work, it literally doesn't matter.

Is there a consensus on what's more important for the progress of technology,
freedom or video games?
>>58309906
Why not both?
>>58309910
This
Video games push the computational speed boundaries. Freedom let's us find new places to use that power, and new ways to apply it to old problems.

How the fuck do you guys keep dust out of your rooms and off your stuff? I swear this shit is driving me insane.
>dust room, vacuum the rug, wipe off shelves, clean PC
>shits dusty yet again a week later
It doesn't help that the house is over 100 years old. Been thinking about getting an air purifier but I've never had one. Any thoughts/ideas?

>the house is over 100 years old
What does the age of the house matter?
Dust is everywhere. You're not going to escape dead skin and dust mite poop unless you live in one of Intel's cleanrooms.

Alright lads, I'm getting real tired of my mom's computer complaints. Tbh this time it doesn't seem to have been her fault, Windows 10 seems to have shat itself (laptop came with 7). But to prepare for this, I explicitly told her a million times "put all important files in OneDrive, so it syncs up to 'the cloud', so if anyting happens to the hardware, all your shit is safe up there", ponting animatedly at the sky the whole time.
But now not only has she not done that recently, she still can't wrap her mind around files and folders. Branches, locations. She can surf the web just fine, and safely - often calling me just to make sure something is legit, can recognize shady popups, cancels any system dialogs that appear when she didn't want them to, makes sure to look again at the domain in the URL before shopping, etc. Also does just fine inside LibreOffice (Writer and even Draw surprisingly, which I can't do for shit). But the concept of the filesystem? Nope. She's always looking for files she created or saved the other day. "Well, where did you save them?" "I dunno lol!". I've tried for years, I give up now.
So seeing as the Windows 10 install has an hero'd, should I just say fuck it and get her a Chromebook instead? She's done her recent qualifiction so she won't even really need office any more (and if she does Google Apps should be fine), just web browsing really. Would it be ok, or will it throw up a whole new set of bullshit problems? Like not being able to open basic files (common video formats, open format docs, gifs. What about how files are handled? It just goes to one Fisher Price place (Drive) automatically, right, no Windows style folders confusion?

I would say it would be a better deal to get a single 16gb stick of DDR4. Less memory to buy if you want to max out the board.
First story on 4chan and I don't quite know where to post stories. Forgive me if the "format" or whatever is wrong - I'm new to this. This story is about an IT Fundamentals teacher I once had.
>Summer going from 8th grade to 9th
>Quit the original special smart kid program I was in 1 week before school starts back up
>Forced into random classes because every other class was taken and filled
>First day of school
>Enter IT Class and know nobody
>"Hello class welcome to IT Fundamentals, Day 1"
>Pretty nice teacher
>Make friends with some few people who know me through mutual friends
>Friends seem pretty lit
>Teacher, Mr. Anon, seems pretty lit
>Smarter than most of my peers
>Everything's going well
>Thanksgiving coming around
>Teacher is gone a few days before break
>Probably just sick or something
>I come back from break and ask out teacher where he was
>Mr. Anon: "No worries, Anon - everything is wonderful in the world"
>He responded to each person individually who asked with that exact statement
>A few days later he leaves again
>concerned.mpeg
>Nearly Christmas break now and he's still nowhere to be found, but posts assignments on Google Classroom...
>...At 4 in the morning each day
>Hasn't graded anything in a month now and everyone has E's - including the smart kids like myself
>Nobody has done any of their work for a solid two weeks now (spare myself)
>Everyone is playing Bloons Tower Defense 5 and whatever unblocked games they can find
>Rumors begin to arise about where our teacher is
>"Probably got killed by Russian terrorists"
>"Or he got fired"
>The rumors kept coming, and the staff knew but wouldn't tell anyone what the deal was
>"Maybe he's having some family issues"
>Yeah that might be so
Christmas Break comes around, and it's overall pretty nice. I celebrate the new year, and I come back to school, unprepared and unready as hell.
Part 2 Will be coming up soon - stay tuned... I guess.
Nice blog post! Where can I subscribe? :^)
Uh, you realize you could type everything before making the thread?
Part 2:
>Looking forward to seeing Mr. Anon after Christmas break
>Walk into his class the morning back from break
>"You're joking" I hear myself say
>We still have a substitute
>And Mr. Anon is still missing
>I check Google Classroom
>"Woohoo, no work due soon!"
>Why didn't he put up an assignment
>And why did he reply to everyone's posts at 1 AM this morning
>Our substitute tells us we have no work to do, and says "I dunno just play games or somethin'"
>BTD5 Friend goes to his computer but his desktop is missing
>Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse all there, but no Desktop
>Before we know it, some men come in in suits.
>therealIT.png
>They pull out BTD5 Friends computer from the corner of the room and bust it open to see if there's a problem
>I look over their shoulders to see if I can think of a fix myself
>The entire motherboard is completely coated in several layers of dust
>Enough layers where you can't see the green anymore
>"Probably just need to toss it and replace it"
>It's probably no problem though, since the computers are probably $50 on eBay at this point
>I go back to my desk and see my friends driving a pen under the keys on the keyboards
>These are not mechanical keyboards, but they can be if you really want 'em too
>They pry up the space bar and start tearing up other keys from multiple keyboards
>I look at their art
>One says "SENDNUDES" In the home row, and in another I see the Alt key placed between A and D, but D is replaced with C
>The pen breaks and they started to use the ink to paint over every other key on the SENDNUDES keyboard, highlighting the SENDNUDES part
>absolute genius
>They proceed to hide them in the corner of the room
>Unfortunately, I was next to them and am probably going to get in deep shit for this
>sneakybeaky.png
What happens next has not happened yet, so I will be back soon with Part 3.

Ubuntu is more than fine, don't listen to the trolls on /g/. I've been using Ubuntu since 2006.
it just functions
http://blog.ntpsec.org/2017/01/03/getting-past-c.html
So which language would you rewrite NTPsec in?
>The Go developers wrote a translator to move their Go compiler from C to Go, but it has no documentation
That sounds about right
>>58309502
Likely because it was only intended as a one-shot thing, so the only person who needed to know how it worked was the one doing the C-to-Go translation.

Great.
Is there any way to fix this or am I supposed to just buy a new drive and transfer everything over
>>58309291
dual boot linux and copy everything from that drive over to your new SSD.
>>58309291
First, buy a new drive and transfer everything.
Then look at what SMART parameters deteriorated and whether they continue doing so over time.
Windows only shows that error if a S.M.A.R.T. attribute goes above a critical threshold
Not necessarily imminent death, but get the drive replaced asap
