What is up with microsoft and their creepy fascination with AA batteries?Seriously they put it into stylus, controllers, mouse, keyboard everything that can takes AA batteries.Do they have some sort of contract with duracell or something?
>>58443773
AA batteries will still be around 30 years from now. The proprietary shape of a battery pack that otherwise would have gone in it will not.
>>58443773
AA batteries are a good thing. They're a standard form factor, unlike Li-ion. NiMH rechargeable AAs are cheap and widely available. In addition they don't die in three to five years like Li-ion does, they only wear out with charge/discharge cycles, not the passage of time.
>>58443773
AA are the most common battery which people have laying around the house.

Found your problem.
8-bit or 16-bit CPUs?
I know these architectures are still used, and I wonder - what are situations where 8-bit CPU suits better? Where 16-bit CPU suits better?
bump for interest
>>58444642
>>58443741
for low cost/low power embedded computers
8bit is generally just overall shittier
>>58443741
ultimately 8-bits are just cheap, there's not much more to it
there are a lot of problems that don't need much more than the capabilities of a z80 or 6502 or 6800 or what the fuck ever to solve, and those aforementioned chips are cheap as hell to build and just as simple to implement
why did i ever fall for this fucking meme
>>58443725
Because you just browse the internet
Using photoshop while rendering in blender and having 100 tabs open and you'll see that even 32 isnt enough
unlucky
>>58443743
I never had an issue rendering in Max with only 16GB.
For me the reality of the need for 32GB came when using Substance Painter with a 4K workflow. Once I hit like 15 layers (and a project can be 50+ easily) it's 100% RAM usage then crashes galore.
I need to get more RAM.

Feels good to be a part of the cool kids klub (OpenBSD-CURRENT)
But updating the base system on this is always a pain in the ass.
What BSD is everyone using? Any tips?
Protip: If you plan on dualbooting make an OpenBSD partition ahead of time and use the "OpenBSD area" option in the installer.
edit: forgot to re-disable JS
Question from a complete BSD newbie: On amd64 is there ever a reason to make a port from source via makefile instead of just using the generic binary?
>>58444740
If you're trying to execute a GNU/Linux binary, FreeBSD has a GNU/Linux emulator built right in. It should work without changing anything.
OpenBSD does not have this emulator, apparently for security reasons. It depends on which BSD you are using.
If you're attempting to compile a native BSD application, creating a port would not be needed.
Reasons of why I enjoy Windows 10 more than OSX
1.- Is more configurable, I can use a classic start menu or a full screen start menu, among other things.
2.- Animations are smoother, sometimes anymations lag in OSX, I don't have that problem with Windows 10.
3.- Alt-tab is glorious in Windows 10, it shows a nice preview of the window, in OSX it just shows an icon.
4.- Close buttons actually close the application(Except for some autistict apps like Skype)
5.- Window buttons are in the right corner, it feels more natural.
6.- Right click is natural, in OSX you need to press CTRL+click, retarded.
7.- OSX feels dull, pretty, but dull.
8.- The Linux Subsystem for Windows is awesome, is compatible with Ubuntu and you actually can run Ubuntu binaries, OSX ships with outdated POSIX tools.
There are probably more.
I was an admirer of OSX once, but with Windows 10, now OSX feels dull.

What blogging site isn't part of the botnet?
I want to create a blog as a sort of public journal on my thoughts of philosophy. I don't care so much that anyone reads it, but I want it to be out there as an archive for myself and for maybe a few people to potentially read and give feedback. How do I do this without submitting to some Google owned botnet that will try to link it back to my true identity in the end?

Thanks friend.
Roll your own. Run a server and set up Apache. Learn web dev basics and you should be good.
How come L3 cache hasn't notably decreased in size while everything else did? It still takes a large part of the die and it's still around in 6-8MB configuration since like C2Q.
We've gone through many full nodes jumps in 10 years, how come it's still so big but still the same size?
Bibelines
>>58443543
It's easier to reserve a bunch of die space for L3 and call it a day. L3 is simpler to implement/not as specialized like L1 and L2.
I also imagine that most of the focus on CPU design within the past 5 years going to power efficiency doesn't exactly help either.
>not running minimal kernel on L3 cache
Plebs!
I know /g/ isn't my personal tech support team, but I searched around a LOT for a solution to this problem, and it appears so far that there isn't one. I think that finding (or creating) a solution could actually be quite helpful to a huge number of people using Windows 10!
For whatever reason, the Windows 10 team decided to be fuckheads (but hey, what's new?) and they removed the ability to switch to the desktop through Alt-Tab. Now one must use Win-D or Win-M, which is fucking annoying, since it's much easier to simply use Alt-Tab for all of my window switching needs. But noooo, apparently now I need to use a separate one for this lone task. It's fucking annoying, very user-UNfriendly, and just a retarded design choice. I mean, WHY!? Literally what benefit at all is there from this? And even if they felt they HAD to do this, could they at not, at the VERY LEAST, given users the /option/ to change it back to the old way?
Anyway, tl;dr: How do I switch to my desktop in Windows 10 using Alt-Tab (I know about Win-D and Win-M but do NOT want to use them).
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions offered!

Panasonic has supposedly developed an IPS panel with >1:000:000 contrast and pixel-by-pixel modulation of light intensity without resorting to dynamic ratios or local dimming zones with plenty of brightness to spare for HDR and motion blur reduction (pick your poison)
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2016/12/05/panasonic-million-to-one-displays/1
http://www.avsforum.com/new-panasonic-ips-lcd-panel-claims-1m1-native-contrast-ratio/
In theory this should mark the end of backlight bleed and IPS glow in high end monitors but that really depends if dell and co will show some interest, I heard panasonic is teetering with one factory and no presence in the US market
>>58442925
>pixel-by-pixel modulation of light intensity without resorting to dynamic ratios or local dimming zones
how?
sounds like pr speak bs
>>58442946
It's probably some sort of electrochromic glass whose reflectivity (and thus opacity) can be controlled electrically.
If they were just stacking panels, at best the same amount of light is blocked as with two polarizers perpendicular to each other and at worst it would allow more light to go through than a single panel.
>>58442946
>>58443257
it's effectively panel stacking, getting 1000:1 squared contrast by double-dimming black/near-black subpixels.
it's probably not actually capable of true 1M:1 ratios of adjactent pixels, just much smaller local dimming zones in effect.
