For anyone who is running windows 10 or was considering upgrading but is turned off by the bloat and bullshit, look into windows 10 LTSB (long term service branch).
No cortana, no windows store, no apps XD, and it's equivalent to windows 10 enterprise in terms of feature set, so you can have the group policy editor.
The only updates it gets are security patches, so you don't have bullshit downloading from windows update all the time fucking up your PC or forcing constant restarts.

how do I into emulation?
obviously I'm not looking to make some cutting edge software this is definitely a learning exercise
I am pretty familiar with C/C++/Python and am starting to learn a little more about assembly and different architectures
my end goal is binary exploitation but I figure that programming even a basic emulator will give me some good insight into those sorts of things
I figure the gameboy is a good place to start and the manual is available online but I'm wondering if there are any books or other good resources around

The classic doc about the DMG is called pandocs (look for gbspec.txt) and contains most that you will know about the hardware.
The things that it doesn't cover is sound and instruction timings.
The Gameboy Programming Manual contains info about the instruction timings but it does have errors on some instructin timings and also it does not cover some instruction (EI and DI for example), so I suggest you use the Zilog 80 doc for that.
The best resource for the sound (also sometime called PAPU; pseudo APU) is

You should definitely go with C or C++ rather than Python, you will do lots of bit pushing.
